PES series - "The Return of the King"

PES6 on PS2 is one of the all time greatest sports and video games. It boggles my mind just how good a game it was and how mediocre most of PES games afterwards were.

PES6 was so crazy good and influential, I don't think I played a sports game remotely as good ever since. 10/10 game if I ever saw one and easily one of the best games on an already ridiculously high quality PS2 library.

I hope it's OK if I pimp my final PES 6 video here. The way the overheads worked is what made me prefer it slightly to PES5.

Why can't we all just enjoy both products.

I really think PES and FIFA have each their own strengths and weaknesses and are fun in each their own way.
I honestly just deleted the fifa demo from my ps4 less than 2 minutes ago. Fifa is a wonderful product that suffers from terrible gameplay. Unfortunately, for me, excellent modes cannot substitute poor gameplay. Will definitely not be buying fifa 15.

So PES2015 is set to be revealed in the next day or so. For fans of the series, was there any time during the last 3 years when you genuinely believed that the King would have made its return?

After playing Fifa for the last 3 years, i remember the hype for PES 2014 being through the roof- with the introduction of the Fox engine and unprecedented gameplay and what not. I ended but buying it but it turned out to be shit though.

Whats the general feeling this year? Im hearing the usual buzz words like 'improved graphics', 'revamped engine'. Is this the year?

NO!!!!!!! this is said every year and its getting old.

I'm curious to see what news we get for PES this week. Looking forward to support an EA Sports competitor. Day 1 if the demo shows promise.

Any complaints with the demo will be met with "Oh it's an early build when it was only 60% complete, the final game will improve all the fixes"

Then the final game ends up worse

Last year PES was already rated higher than FIFA in Eurogamer, which is probably the most important publication regarding the genre; usually great FIFA fans too.

I had way more fun with PES 2014 with FIFA 14, owning both.

But in the end, none of this matter. I'm an old school footie player, I play 1vs1 local. People play stuff like Ultimate Team, 11vs11, they want a robust online and a solid community, along with a great presentation with lots of licensed teams and leagues, so they will stick to FIFA. Reviews such as the Eurogamer one also focus too much on core gameplay, when that is becoming less and less the main feature of a footie.

Still, I'm glad to feel that PES is a notch above in gameplay and it seems that 2015 will take that notion a step further.

Awesome, nice one.

I love the series but I wish they'd add new modes. A clubs mode with PES gameplay would be incredible.

If PES wants to be successful they have to introduce a "Ultimate Team" mode. People are addicited to it and it's expanding to another sports games (Madden, NHL, NBA2K...) and this year Madden has been very successful.

Unfortunately it's a cash cow and right now a feature that some people demand to buy a sports game. But without licenses....

It's just sad though that nowadays the succes of a footie game is based on a imo terrible gamemode that only serves as a cash-cow.

It's not just football games. Every sports game is like this nowadays, just look around. Madden Ultimate Team this year is a massive hit. NBA 2K My Team was a big hit last year. Hockey Ultimate Team is less of a hit because NHL doesn't sell a lot but still a lot of those that buy it play it.

Since the horse armour DLC, the industry keeps trying to find ways to charge you more than the $60/€60 that the retail game costs. Shooters release map packs and skins for multiplayer, single player games release new levels or side stories as DLC while sports games were immune to that because they had nothing to charge you after the game released. FIFA 09 was the first try: EA release Ultimate Team as paid DLC + Santiago Bernabeu as DLC. Now they don't need that because it's actually better to give you free access to the cash cow that is Ultimate Team. As a consumer it's best for us because it keeps the fixed costs and nothing is cut from the main game to be released after launch as DLC, but at the same time I believe the growth of Ultimate Team modes is the reason why career and other single player modes in sports games have been suffering a lot in the past...

I like Ultimate Team but I'm not a fanatic about it. And looking at FIFA's shallow career mode I fear for the future of sports games. Modes available in FIFA 21: Ultimate Team, Online Seasons, 11 vs 11, Dynamic Season Mode.

I hate how every FIFA/PES thread turns into arguments about what is better. I buy both games every year but end up sticking with FIFA cause it has the online modes I like such as Co-Op seasons and Pro Clubs. If PES has these modes too I would provably share my time more equally for sure.

My biggest problem with PES is that they've messed around with the single player stuff too much.

I'm never, ever going to buy PES to play online. FIFA has got Seasons and Ultimate Team sewn up and I'm fine with that. But Master League was fucking amazing and I'd buy a PES which did that right again in a heartbeat.

They've even managed to balls that up though from what I've seen over some of the previous games.

demo will be better than full version. 100%. EVERY FUCKING YEAR!

Like always. I dont know why in the world they do it. That demo feedback they get is often positive yet the alter the final product so much that it becomes disappointing. I'll get PES for the single player and they should focus on the core gameplay and balance. Konami and the PES brand have in no way the capabilites to compete with FIFA right now. They could get in a better position if they do what helped them 10 years ago: Better gameplay than FIFA, which surprisingly isnt that hard to achieve after the FIFA15 demo.

That's what they have done. They are introducing a new mode called, Myclub (PES' version of UT).

Wait don't tell me you're Feanor? :| as in pesfan/pesgaming etc.

Yeah, that's me. It's really sad what happened to PESFan as the series went into decline. The Goal Gallery/Goal of the Month/Hints forums used to be packed with people, all eager to help each other out with getting better at the game. Now they're pretty much dead.

They do. Master League Online/MyClub

If I got PES 2013 for the Wii, could I play it on the Wii U with the Gamepad, or the Wii U Pro controller?

No, it seems like I'd have to buy a classic controller.

Well there's also the option of dumping the game via your Wii and play it on your PC with a emulator using any control option you want if your PC is beefy on the CPU side.

I've only really played FIFA games but I want to give PES a proper go. I played one that I got free with PS+ a while back but really didn't enjoy it but I'm not prepared to give up on it yet.

Oh cool nice to see you on GAF! Been watching your vids for years, the GotM used to be pretty amazing on there, was a hardcore lurker on there up until few years ago. Still play 5/6 more than I care to admit tbh.

Thanks! I would still play 5 or 6 on my PC but they crash a lot for me now, and finding an up to date OF is a pain in the ass. And getting the correct situation to even try to score the only goal I never scored that I really wanted (a volley direct from own keeper's kick in PES 5) is basically random, so I couldn't play with a real purpose like I used to.

Its out Tuesday for XBOX users and NA Sony.

Wednesday for rest of Sony. I'll use my American account.
