Why is it that people like Jeremy, Alanah Pearce, Angry Joe, Karak and Chris Ray Gun all seem to have mixed impressions on it but the mainstream media universally loved it?
And no, I haven't got a hate boner for the game. Just genuinely curious.

I like some of Chris ray guns videos but none of those people are people I watch for their opinions on video games if I watch them at all. this has nothing to do with disagreeing with their point of view I just think that they don't have much depth of thought there are plenty of game critics on YouTube I think are great that don't necessarily agree with me on everything or even anything. I was just watching first a 3-hour analysis of why fallout 3 is bad and then an hour and a half one defending it. Both were way more interesting than the typical review. in fact I'd argue in general it takes a long time for a game to get proper analysis.

Well, it's impossible to answer this question for sure, but I'll try with an example.
In Germany we got a gaming channel called Rocket Beans TV - you could compare them to Easy Allies.
I tend to trust them when it comes to reviews, because they were pretty harsh to some popular movies & games in the past.
They loved THE LAST OF US PART II.
But when I saw their review talk, it seemed like they understood why many gamers will be unhappy with it, criticise several plot points and deem it a disappointment because of that.
I think those 10/10 journalists managed to put of the "I want the game to be more of the first part" glasses and just analysed the game they got in a fair way - and came to the conclusion, that they loved it, even though Naughty Dog went another direction and abandoned some beloved elements from the first part.
If you look at some streamers, they quickly get too emotional, share their memories of playing the first part and talk about their deep love for Joel and Ellie.
I saw the same thing happening with the leaks: I don't like 2-3 things I saw out of context, so now I hate the game, won't play it, but mock it on the Internet.

There is something that amazes me about this whole situation and the first thing I did when I beat the game, was spending half a day on youtube checking out what's behind some of the worst looking thumbnails I could find on the subject. And while some of it was pure hate boner feeding tsunami of bullshit that started off with...
JOEL GETS KILLED BY A TRANNY WITH A GOLF CLUB
...and similar headlines, I have seen quite a lot of reasonable, well-articulated criticism of the game which I respect. Some of which here on GAF. And while I feel I have a good understanding of it, it still has absolutely no influence on my own impressions of the game which are overwhelmingly positive. But can't help being curious, as getting acquainted with such opinions is something I find way more interesting than sitting in an echo chamber, so I started digging deeper.
Among those editorials taking a piss at the game and Cuckmann's absolute failure in making the biggest release on PlayStation ever, there were numerous montages of big-name game streamers with their far from positive reactions while playing.
It all kind of reminds me of my ex girlfriend. When we were watching movies, she kept on swiping facebook and later complaining that the plot didn't make any sense.
Don't get me wrong, streaming is great fun. I irregularly do it myself and for some reason, there is a handful of people I know that tune in.
It's great for replays, skill-oriented games, competitive games, e-sports, challenge runs, speed runs, any kind of vs or co-op, cutting through Chalice Dungeons PvE in Bloodborne... I get it, it's a valuable social component of the gaming spectrum. It's so much fun.
But here... I mean, is it really worth it?
How can anyone possibly enjoy playing a game like TLOU2 for the first time while constantly dividing attention between actually playing the game and reading the chat? Especially during cutscenes, perfect moment to catch up. Then there is the pressure of entertaining the viewer which for according to the How-To-Make-It-Happen-On-Twitch-101 manual is best released in the form of making constant Cpt. Obvious type of comments on what everybody is seeing on screen and making jokes about it...
See I love gaming, and if a game like this comes out (up next Ghost of Tsushima) its - headphones on, shutters down, coffie, dual shock me and the game and I'm out for 2 days.
I think the only worse way to experience a story-driven single-player immersive action-adventure game for myself than playing it that way, would be watching it with somebody's mug plastered on the screen talking over the action. To me, it's just batshit crazy, how detrimental it is to the whole experience, especially to anyone as a player.
Old man yells at the cloud, maybe, but it's just hard for me to find a reason to pay attention to an opinion formulated while experiencing a game like TLOU2 in such an environment.

This was what I was waiting for, 2 out of 3 my go to reviewer noticed the same stuff I did, I already finished the game and gamestop is not accepting the trade-in, and that pisses me off ^^

No. There are people who are trying to counter the haters by making repeat accounts and posting 10s. The number of review scores is over 5 times the previous game. It is going to even out at 6ish.

I'm not trying to make you dislike it, and honestly I'm tired of this game and writing essays why story is dog shit, there are bazillion discussions/videos just go read/watch those if you need constructive explanations.

I liked thinking “I hate Abby” and then seeing her side.
It made me think of the TV show LOST. There was a character that was shown to us who was clearly the antagonist. The character was Ben. Ya had no choice but to hate him. But eventually, through flashbacks, you’re shown his side of things. And it turns he’s not evil. He’s not the antagonist. He has reasons for the things he’s doing.... and the stars of the show that we’re all watching are possibly the antagonists too.
There’s two sides to every story.
So my question remains: Has there been a game where you see and play as both sides?
The first game had the advantage of being one of the first dad games these 30-something game reviewers had to latch onto, and had high enough production values+standard style of writing to give them something to hold up to make them feel more mature in their career.
We'll have to see if the lesbian experience in this game hits home for them as well.
I'm predicting a 93. It won't deserve it like a God of War, but ND games always score overly high.

I'm the most misogonyst person I know, and I'm sorry, I just couldn't see an agenda in this game. I hated and loved he game. I just finished a couple hours ago without knowing why it got so criticized and I just can't understand the hate. I loved everything about the game and the character development. The only thing I actually hated and made me dislike the game was the way they thrower us Abby's story. Like wtf, Im at the end and all the sudden I have to play 10 more hours with a character I hate?

I guess I'm not the most misogonyst person lol. I just couldn't find the agenda, the only moment I remember thinking wtf was when we found out Lev is trans, like wtf does that have to do with anything? And the part about her mom wanting to kill him because of it. But other than that I just couldn't find anything out of the ordinary. We knew ellie was gay since the first one, al wants the agenda? Joel was never the primary character of the series, it was Ellie.
Some folks just simply won't fall in line with the american culture war. It's good that free-thinkers will try games for themselves to decide what's good and bad for them. A shame others let manchilden on the internet decide their tastes in games - what's is good or bad. I don't see the problem here other than a purity test.

You don't call your self a misogynist then go all 'hurr durr hey guys i hate women but love all the lesbians and that roided up she freak this game.' It's a bunch of disingenuous garbage. And if anybody listened to what the manchildren on the internet had to say everybody would be consuming tlou 2 and all the other AAA trash

Well you know man "hate" women until they see one naked. Then that little thing starts to act all kinds of weird. Not to mention that pornhub stat that's out there about lesbians..... perhaps we have a case of some getting to know themselves better, subconsciously without noticing? Who knows.... so many probabilities.

I just can't understand the hate. I hadn't read the spoilers at all nor the crítics because I wanted to finish the game first. Now that I finally finished it a couple hours ago, went and read everything and I got to say I don't know what the fuck are they talking about. So killing Joel now all the sudden is pushing an agenda? ND fucked it up in the way they delivered Abby's story. Surely there must be a better way than just dividing the game in two. That almost made me hate the game because we finally are at the climax, Abby vs ellie, and then all the sudden you throw me Abby's story? And I have to play for 10 fucking hours to get to the point I was? I hated it. After 3 hours of
playing with Abby and realizing it wasn't just going to be a quick side story and I was in fact playing a second part of the game, I stopped hating it and accepted I had to play with her. But I just can't see a better way for them to show us the other side and to makes us understand why Abby didn't kill them and why ellie didn't ki her either. It's not a story about revenge, it's a story about redemption.

Sorry, I used the wrong word. I'm just not a fan of this new feminism where every woman hates man. I would consider myself a lot more meaning to the right than the left. After saying that, I just can't see what the fuck are people talking about. What I see is that most haters saw the leaks before playing the game. Obviously you won't like the game if you know what's going to happen, duh.

Well, none of the names I listed in the post you quoted disliked the game because of any agenda.
I agree the game has no agenda because it has no real woke message or themes. It's just a checklist of diversity protocols.
They all disliked the game for different reasons but I'm with you, my biggest gripe with the game is being thrown back 10 hours right at the peak of the plotline. Abby is ok, I don't hate her, but that was the worst pacing decision I've ever experienced in a game.

Yeah, It made me rush Abby's part because I thought it was only go for like half an hour, I was so anxious to get to the plot. After 3 hours I realized that wasn't gonna be the case, took several days break and came back with a new mentality of "ok, I guess this is part 2 of the game so I may as well play it".

Yea exactly. By the end, I just put the difficult right down and literally ran through the part on the island. I genuinely just lost all patience, maybe that's on me but I've never even been tempted to do that in any other game. You can't just reset the game to a snail's pace after leaving us at a climax with characters that we actually care about.
If they had let you play all of Ellie's campaign, kill Abby in full anger mode then go back and revist everything in a new light, I think that would have been infinately more powerful. It also would have solved the pacing issues.

Yes, that's the only problem I have with the game. It's like they couldn't come up with a better idea to present us with Abby's story. They couldn't do it through the game because it would kill the rage emotion you had playing as ellie, so they opted to divide the game in half. If they finished the game without telling us Abby's side it wouldn't make any sense for her to live Ellie alive.
Omg that's exactly what happened to me lol. I thought it was going to be a very quick side story because as soon as you start, you get a lot of stuff to upgrade your weapons and abilities, so I guessed it was because it would be a short side story and the devs wanted us to be fully equipped. But then I unlocked a new skill trick and was like what the fuck? Am I seriously going to play Abby's story? I hated it, I just wanted to play with Ellie again to kill Abby. After several hours I finally realized that this wasn't a short story and that Naughty Dog had in fact, divided the game in two parts, one of the most stupid ways to tell a story.
