Yar's Revenge: Weapon and Bugs Trailer:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TEdAJTpuhoI&hd=1

It's 3 days old, but don't believe it was ever posted here.

Such an interesting looking oddity... Story sounds like something that could have fit right in with the Robotech trilogy, the designs are all solid and interesting, and it looks like an interesting semi-Panzer Dragoon-alike. It's actually refreshing to see an old game of such simple graphics, getting such a thorough reimaging.

Birthing Super Meat Boy: The GDC Super Meat Boy Post-Mortem Recap

http://www.gamespot.com/events/gdc2011/story.html?sid=6301170

GDC 2011: Team Meat dissects last year's breakout platformer, says PC release on Steam outperformed Xbox Live, and team is now working on 3DS dev kits.

Who was there: Programmer Tommy Refenes was there in the flesh, while artist Edmund McMillen joined in via Skype to recap and dissect the development of Super Meat Boy.

Meat!

What they talked about: After some technical tinkering, Refenes welcomed the audience to the postmortem, which he described as "the story of Meat Boy, peppered with various good and bad things." He preemptively apologized for a lack of preparation for the talk by explaining that it's so personal for him and McMillen that it seemed silly to write anything down about it.

McMillen talked about the original Meat Boy Flash game, saying he made it in about three weeks and hadn't thought it would be anything terribly popular. Refenes entered the picture when the two ran into each other at a previous year's GDC. They had previously known each other from the early days of Newgrounds, when they were affiliated sites that linked to one another. The two first worked on a Flash game called Grey Matter to see if the collaboration would work.

Satisfied with the results, the two agreed to make a console game. Refenes thought Meat Boy would be a strong starting point for the pair and a more appealing project to him personally than what he had been working on at the time. Around the same time, McMillen had been talking to Nintendo about bringing Meat Boy to WiiWare and had also been working on Gish 2 (a follow-up to a previous indie release he worked on) with an eye to release that game on Xbox Live Arcade. Quote: "We definitely wanted to do it on everything. But thinking about it now, if we'd done it on everything, I'd be dead. That's not a joke. Don't laugh."--Refenes, on why they scaled back platform plans for Super Meat Boy.

Takeaway: Delivering Super Meat Boy was a painful experience for both McMillen and Refenes, demanding significant sacrifices from both. And despite making a widely hailed game, they didn't know what sort of critical or commercial success it would garner in advance. As for Microsoft, Refenes said everyone on the creative side was great, but they didn't understand the business people.

I thought the Australian rating site only said it was published by MS?
It's very likely to mean XBLA but at this point, it could just mean windows mobile?

New Swarm Preview
http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/01/swarm-preview/

From the premise of Swarm -- guide a group of identical, stupid creatures through trap-filled words -- and from screenshots and video, it's easy to assume it's a Pikmin-style action-strategy game, with one player character wielding a small army of critters to fulfill goals. At least, it was easy for me to assume that. But there's a lot more action and a lot less strategy than you're thinking. In fact, Swarm is pretty much a platformer, albeit a platformer in which you control 50 avatars simultaneously.

Now you might be thinking that it would be pretty much impossible to control 50 avatars simultaneously -- and you would be right. In fact, your little Swarmites are constantly dying off due to traps, environmental hazards, and good old-fashioned failed jumps. Not only is this okay, it's necessary; each death increases your score multiplier, and interesting deaths result in in-game awards.
Swarm (GDC 2011)

Swarm tasks players with getting a gaggle of 50 creatures across dangerous levels, into what looks like a giant elephant trunk. Along the way, there are land mines littering the floor, chasms, Mario-style lava fireballs, and other hazards. It's not enough for your errant creatures to fall in the lava, by the way; when you miss a jump, spikes fly out of the lava and impale the unlucky Swarmites. At a few points during each level, you can replenish your supply of Swarmites using "DNA" piles, which is important for two reasons; first, if you run completely out, you lose, and second, because you need multiples both for basic gameplay and to hit pressure pads that give you bonus items.

Your Swarmites all move in unison in response to the analog stick, and jump in near-unison. You can also make them gather or spread out. Combining these moves allows you to do things like make them dash to break objects (which always kills a few Swarmites) or jump on each other's shoulders and form a tower. That last move is used to create a sort of "human" bridge from one platform to another, and to knock over stacks of crates.

how is sega rally online different from revo?

- singleplayer "championship mode" (classic arcade sega rally with timer)
- savannah stage from SR1 arcade
- worse graphics

as cool as it is to see them release this, there is really no incentive for someone who owns revo

Yeah I can't see this being about the XBLA. Probably Netflix + Kinect.

It might be Hulu. That's due on 360 soon enough.

GDC 11: Four-person multiplayer in Spelunky XBLA
Exciting Spelunky news to come out of GDC 2011. First, the oh-God-yes one: the impending Xbox Live Arcade version of the game will feature four-person local multiplayer. If there's friendly fire, I don't even know. Great to hear either way.

IndieGames also reports that the shop keeper has been streamlined to the point where only a single button press is needed when purchasing multiple items.

"This might be scary to hear," says programmer Andy Hull, "but you can’t be afraid to change things from the original game. This was made easier by the fact that the original game will still exist." He went so far as to say that "The freeware game acted as our design document for the XBLA game."

Klei Entertainment on 'The Journey to Creating Shank'

As usual some snippets, full article at the link
Klei Entertainment was pushed to the verge of bankruptcy during the development of its ultra-violent, Desperado-inspired action game, Shank. Studio founder Jamie Cheng described some of the more tumultuous periods in the game's development at a GDC panel on Tuesday morning, admitting that stress even managed to crack his normally calm demeanor.

In order to remain afloat and complete Shank, Klei introduced temporary (and optional) employee wage reductions with interest, and Cheng himself took out a bank loan against his house in January 2010. The studio was offered a lifeline from an unnamed publisher, but it declined the offer and opted for a fairer, less constrictive deal with EA Partners. "We kept the IP, we kept the creative freedom; it was the good stuff," Cheng said.

The gamble paid off for both parties when Shank launched in August 2010. It sold more units in the first 24 hours than the studio's cute puzzle game Eets: Chowdown had within its entire lifetime. Cheng wouldn't offer definitive numbers, but said that Xbox Live Arcade statistics reported sales of 41,000 units within the first week, "which is respectable and profitable for everyone," and a trial-to-full purchase rate of 26 perecent. PlayStation Network sales were slower (but were catching up with those of XBLA), and while Cheng wouldn't characterize the Steam performance as going "amazingly well," he mentioned that it has a "really long tail and just keeps on going."

Rock Of Ages: The Offense And Defense

http://www.gamerbytes.com/2011/03/rock_of_ages_the_offense_and_d.php

So all we had really seen of Ace Team's Rock Of Ages was apparently the offensive mode -- the rolling of the rock. But based on this new IGN preview, there's a whole second piece to it -- being defensive.

The Rock, you see, must roll all the way to the doors of the opponent -- but the opponent is able to strategically place defenses around the level to stop the rock from getting to the end, depleting its power and crumbling before it gets to the end.

It's a pretty unique take on the Tower Defense genre, and we don't seem to have many more of them on the way to the XBLA or PSN, so let's hope it's good.

BG&E HD bought, but I'm strangely drawn to Days of Thunder as well. Anyone tried it?

I know Piranha Games are working on Mechwarrior and did Need for Speed: Undercover, but that's not enough to make me bite the bullet.

Try days of thunder out before you think about buying it, the game feels very iffy especially in the car handling department.

Fireburst - First Look: XBLA Debut Trailer
The developers are exDream, not Black Inc (that was a now closed publishing label of RTL Games). Fireburst was actually planned as a retail release a couple of years ago. Then RTL Games apparently cancelled the game.

By the way, exDream were actually responsible for the "Racing Game" demo/starter kit that Microsoft used to promote and introduce XNA:

Wrecked – Revenge Revisited Announced for Xbox LIVE Arcade & PlayStation Network

http://electronictheatre.co.uk/inde...ed-for-xbox-live-arcade-a-playstation-network

505 Games has today announced Wrecked – Revenge Revisited, an all-new battle racer from the team behind seminal multiplayer title, Mashed. Set for release on both Xbox LIVE Arcade for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation Network, Wrecked – Revenge Revisited will be released this spring.

In 2004, developer Supersonic released Mashed for Xbox console, PlayStation 2 and Windows PC to public and critical acclaim. Fast forward to 2011, and the same team is developing a modern, action packed, full on mayhem, driving title with elements that made previous titles such a success. Wrecked – Revenge Revisited will be the first ever online racing game from Supersonic.

“We’re really excited to partner with 505 Games to bring the spiritual successor to Mashed to our existing fan-base and our unique style of racing mayhem to a brand new audience. We want to bring some soul and humourElectronic Theatre Image back into the racing genre, and can’t wait for [PlayStation Network] and [Xbox LIVE Arcade] consumers to get their hands on Wrecked – Revenge Revisited.” Said Pete Williamson, Managing Director, from Supersonic.

Wrecked – Revenge Revisited is not about fast lap times, gaining pole position, perfect cornering or aerodynamics; it’s about winning by any means necessary. Aggressive driving is not so much encouraged, but a given prerequisite as players will come across a wide variety of weapons and vehicle enhancements to help muscle rivals off the track and out of the points. Survivors are encouraged to keep their wits about them however, as vanquished foes are given the opportunity for instant revenge via five different aerial strikes to add a certain spice to proceedings.

Wrecked – Revenge Revisited builds upon this unique formula by adding customisation of player cars, so rivals will see each other coming with no mistake. A single player Championship Mode will offer twenty-four Electronic Theatre Imagechallenges divided across four disciplines to allow drivers plenty of solo time to hone their skills. Up to four players can tear out against each other in either local or online multiplayer modes across a number of different tracks in distinctive locations.

“With Wrecked – Revenge Revisited, Supersonic are again able to show just how good they are at putting together irresistible, pick up and play racing action,” commented Tim Woodley, Global Brand Director, 505 Games. “Mashed was a one-off title that has yet to be toppled in the fun stakes, and we’re proud to be able to bring a modern take on a classic to a new generation.”

Wrecked – Revenge Revisited will be available on both Xbox LIVE Arcade for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation Network this spring.
