it really could go either way. he needs to have one hell of a love story and emotion to pull in the women.....

Fox would be wise to not concentrate on trying to 'woo' the female audience more than any other demo with this marketing angle for two reasons.

A) Avatar will never replicate the success of Titanic with female audiences. Titanic's massive haul at the box office was almost exclusively down to the repeat business of the female (teenage) audience. Titanic had Leo whose poster was on every girl's bedroom wall. Avatar has ten foot tall blue aliens.

B) The Twilight sequel already has the sort the audience awareness and buzz, even at this point, that Avatar is desperately lacking. There is no way Sam Worthington or even James Cameron as a name brand is any match for James Pattinson at this moment in time.

You don't need to hammer home the potential romantic drama angle to bring in a female audience. Look at The Dark Knight. Women are interested in compelling stories and cinematic experiences as much as anyone else. Providing Fox don't push the military angle of the story too much of course.

I think you guys underestimate how many furries are out there. I met one not to long ago. Trust me, furries only every talk about furries.

I met a furry once. We all thought it was funny, and would always refer to him as Steve the Furry. We were all hanging out some time, and I heard him talking to one of my gay friends about how he was so sick of people always referring to him as Steve the Furry. He compared it to how ridiculous it would be to always introduce my gay friend as Michael the Gay. I didn't really agree with the comparison but I felt really bad anyway.

Moral of the story: Furries are people too. :lol

Also both Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana are signed on for sequels so kinda dumb anyway.

Most actors who aren't major stars (and thus don't have the bargaining power) and are starring in a big studio picture sign multi picture deals with the studio making the film. So in terms of Sam Worthington and Avatar he'll likely be signed to Fox for three films which may or may not be Avatar related.

If it's a franchise picture then the standard rule of thumb is three pictures with an option for a fourth. You'll find that Christain Bale is on a deal like this with Warners for Batman and I imagine other 'franchise stars' such as Chris Pine will be on the same deal with Paramount for Star Trek.

However I know (for a fact cause he told me) one popular actor with GAF who was in a big fantasy franchise film a few years ago signed a multi picture deal with the studio who made the film. He bascially said he 'owed' the studio three more films.

One famous case was Ed Norton who signed a multi picture deal with Paramount when he was a young unknown actor for Primal Fear. The deal lay dormant for years only for Norton to be horrifed when Paramount 'activated' the clause in his contract and made him play the bad guy in the remake of The Italian Job.

The more you know.....

Bitching and moaning about how Fox is marketing it means it'd be funny if we go to the movie? How does thinking Fox is fucking up how they handle the movie have anything to do with wanting to see the movie or not?

By "those guys" i meant the people who are adamant that Avatar is the worst thing they've seen, a cartoon with blue creatures, posting Davy Jones pictures etc...

The marketing moaners are a different complaint.

One of the young people i work with has recently taken to telling everyone that he is a furry with a glint in his eye.

Alright GAF, so let’s start taking some bets. I’ve already come to the conclusion from the first time I heard about the story that one of the main characters is gonna die in the movie, but the question is, which one will die......
Obviously
Jake, he's a traitor and his body is in the hands of humans. But lets see if Cameron has the balls to be stupid enough to have the humans kill Jake's body and for him to actually be a Na'vi thru some random magic bullshit and the final shot be a close up od his hand with only four fingers, if it's any of that kindergarden baby writing, Cameron's dead to me.

That's a bad thing to do, and I shouldn't be laughing at it, but I am. It totally serves Norton right after all his interference in the crafting of films he's starred in.

Haha, it was exactly the same story with the furry I knew.

You guys didn't tell me the intro from Cameron was in 3D! Fuck I knew I should have gone! I could have been closer than ever! :lol

Scullibundo you need to settle the fuck down otherwise Avatar will be the biggest disappointment of your life. James Cameron did not feel "real" in any way shape or form, dunno what the hell that guy was on. It was your average "two planes of depth" 3D. Avatar doesn't do anything new with 3D. You better realize this fact.

I wonder what the cause of this divide is? I've seen some fairly skeptical types mindboggled by the 3D effect, and then there's people like jett who don't seem impressed at all.

I was impressed by the footage in several ways, but the 3D in Avatar really wasn't anything new to me. Like I said before, for now I prefer the more subtle use in Ice Age 3. In IA3 3D was used to extened the depth of the image, in Avatar it's used to show a lot of crap in the foreground.

The guy in the wheelchair (coming out of the aircraft) at the start of the trailer is CGI. The fuck!!??

Its quite obviously the actor being filmed in front of a blue screen. The perspective doesnt seem right and the CGI background is of a laughably low quality.

Yeah...I actually heard the exact opposite from a few people.
Guess I'll just have to see it for myself in December and make up my own mind! What a novel concept.

my question is why are they not releasing this trailer in 3D? There are plenty of films coming out that feature 3D why not put this trailer before Final destination or any of the numerous films coming out in 3D

I mean personally I think the cg looks cartoony and doesn't fit with the enviroments at points. Now everyone says you need to see it in 3D to experience it.I wasn't able to see the imax stuff so I'd like to see a trailer in 3D cause if it looks much better in 3D theni wanna see that before i see this film.

Jett, I remember in the early days of AVATAR threads, you were wholly against the concept of 3d. I'm glad to see you've come around and giving the final release of AVATAR a chance.

I went to watch Under the Sea in 3d this weekend. There was a 3d trailer of AVATAR. However, it was nothing like the 15 minute preview. The shots are too quick for any of the 3d to sink in, so to speak.

The 3d trailer for A Christmas Carol was also very underwhelming. The movie looks interesting, but the 3d is nothing to write home about.

Watching Pirates3 for the first time.
Jones looks fucking great, but it definitely 100% does not look "real."
I found his walking animation not realistic enough, but in the 2nd Pirates especially when you mostly see him sitting, playing organ etc, it looks perfectly real. There again, the only walking scene I remember, when he's in the rain, looked tiny bit jittery. But really, other than that, I think they nailed everything right.

And yeah, pirates 3 is a weird movie that even lacks the funny action parts from the second one, which made that one entertaining.

So wait, why are the Na'vi considered "furry" even though they have no fur? Is every non-human being now being considered a furry?

Anything that's not human but has human characteristics it seems. Although yeah, they're far from furry. They're rubbery looking.

If there are any Gaffers still doubting why this movie is getting all the hype and buzz, please do me a favor and watch it @ IMAX 3D when it comes out. It will all make sense once you see it in 3D. Believe.

So, every bipedal non-human is now considered a "Furry". Does that include District 9's Prawns. Or maybe even the motherfucking Predator?

It's now getting beyond stupid.

I think it's just a catch all term for sex perverts who's interest is non-human pretty much. Though the pics people post are all people dressed in furry suits.

I won't begrudge someone who might find an attraction in something slightly inhuman, like the Na'vi. I think Cameron even admitted they needed to make the Na'vi with some physical appeal in order for Jake, a human, to become attracted to Netraya. I think he actually used the phrase "would you do her?" when having the artists come up with the design.

Although, the people who dress in those suits do seem kind of, unsettling.

Then why is she so ugly?
They could have easily made a hot looking alien chick.
I'm pretty sure that green chick that Kirk nailed in this summers Star Trek was hot :lol

Truthfully I don't think Fox will ever get the marketing right for this thing. What's the excuse for that shit-ass website?

Yeah the website is shitty.

It should be noted that the 4 million hit bitchslap that AVATAR dealt out on apple.com was in LotR's direction (1.7million).

No, the trick is that the anthropomorphized being must have features or be based on a zooilogical model that can be justified as potentially sensual or sexy by Internet nerds who are afraid of furries.

Therefore the Predator doesn't seem furry because it's hard for most people to imagine any human finding him sexy, if only for the face. Sexy in a powerful, ass-kicking way, maybe. After all, most FPS fans sexualize firearms plenty :lol (Maybe we should call FPS players Gunnies.)

Avatar's aliens, with somewhat feline features, are /supposed/ to be so close to human that humans are justified as finding them attractive. Therefore it's hell on wheels for geeks who are bent in pushing anything remotely "furry" away from themselves. Na'vi are furries for everyone! lol?

Oddly enough, the people who freak out over furries never seem to wonder if it's the /human/ part, rather than the animal part, that makes fictional creatures like the Na'vi sensual to say, authentic furry fans. People like sci-fi fans have found exotic humanoids sexy for decades. It's when the exotic humanoids have some features in common with Earth animals people recognize, like cats, that a whole category of geeks get really nervous. Hmm...

As someone said years ago in a thread (not on NeoGAF) where a bunch of Internet dweebs were ragging on some girl's "furry" art that had nothing to do with porn or even being sexualized: "you people are all the sick ones, who look at something innocent and see sexually perverted overtones."

Huh? LOTR didn't hold the record. Star Trek beat the record earlier this year on Apple.com

Youtube video looks like complete ass compared to the actual preview. I suggest not watching as well. Do yourselves a favor and wait for it on the big screen.
