Evolution 2014 Thread 2: Evil doesn't prevail July 13th - Final day

We ordered pizza twice. First time it was ok the second time it seemed undercooked and old. It was like gas station pizza. I don't know if it was the same place. There was a flyer in our room. LVH kind of sucked. Great ballroom though.

any Gaffers ended up on streams? i wanna see you guys in action in the archives.
Same I Like to see some of the videos
E: OSU- LVH has gone through many changes. It used to be my hotel to stay before I started getting free offers from other hotels. And Westgate just recently bought then over. I used to like going to their sportsbook. It was huge

The LVH is the stereotypical retiree resort. Hell, there was even an Elvis convention going on at the same time as EVO. And the fact its fairly isolated didn't help matters much.

The buffet was pretty good, though.

The hockey tournament, evo, and an elvis convention all happening at the same time was the weirdest shit hahaha

Ehh, it was okay. My friends and I hit up the buffet at Paris on Saturday for brunch and that was amazing. Brunch was $35 compared to LVH's $17.

Aw, man. Evo is over.

This weekend was so great, man. Sigh...

Hey, can any of you folks recommend a good podcast or two about fighting games? I'd like to keep up with this stuff from now on.
I just like watching the competitions. The weekly fighting game community (FGC) thread Enzo does will usually list any tournament(s) that will be coming up over the following weekend. The OP list there is a little overwhelming at first glance, so I'd recommend starting with the Wednesday streams of the weekly smaller coastal tournaments and then branch out from there. From Enzo's thread for this week http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=854713:

Next Level Battle Circuit [ 8PM EDT | 4PM PDT ]
  • NYC's biggest weekly at The Next Level Arcade in Brooklyn featuring SSFIV AE, UMvC3 and TTT2. If the Teamsp00ky link is not working, it is likely on the backup stream on Arturo's channel.
Wednesday Night Fights [ 12AM EDT (following day) | 9PM PDT ]
Usually Next Level grand finals are ending as Wednesday Night Fights is about to start up and everyone on twitch migrates accordingly. Just listening to the commentary will inform you about stuff going on. Again, Enzo's threads are a great resource to find out more about the communities surrounding each game here on GAF and the rest of the web.

This is good advice. If you do nothing but watch Battle Circuit each week and discuss it with the FGW thread, it'll keep you pretty well in touch with what's going on in the FGC.

For 1, pick the simplest character in the game. Luffy just one with one of the simplest SF characters and outside of Storm, J Wong's team is rather simple as well. Players spend a lot of time on characters that aren't suited for their strengths.

For 2 it's just a mindset. It took forever for me to learn to not always try to rush down. I still do it sometimes.
Fair enough. I had Juri,Cammy and Oni on my pallet. (I had some luck with Ryu but he makes me hate the game)

Watching Justin play his ass off and win Evo shows you just how much Chris G relies on Morridoom screen filling for wins. Chris is a good player, but nowhere near the legendary status of Justin. In fact, there are so many players that would shit on Chris if it wasn't for Morridoom. Well deserved to Justin. No Zero, no Vergil, no broken shit. Pure 100% skill. Bodied everyone straight through. The king has returned.

For some reason, making a decent podcast is just something the community struggles with. There is "The Show That Sucks", but outside of a few episodes I have never really given it a proper listen. So I can't comment on the quality. Plenty of live streams go on at Twitch at weekly basis though.

You can find them here: http://www.twitch.tv/team/fgcpros or just by stopping the Fighting Game Weekly thread.

This so much. How many times a random missile saved his ass when he was about to get pummeled.

Chris used to run with friggin' Ryu and was still one of the best in the game.

I think he dominates because he perfected that team, but he's still an amazingly talented player.

This EVO made it clear that there are not 5 Marvel gods. There are 3. ChrisG is clearly one of them.

ChrisG bodies B/C tier players with his Wesker/Ryu/Hawkeye team. The guy's skill in this game is ridiculous... I can't tell you how many times he has used some make shift teams in Grand Finals and won with it. The only reason he doesn't do that stuff any more because people got too uppity about "collusion" and hence has been using this team for the most part.

And only his Morrigan has actually won big tournaments... most other Morrigans fall short or have only won smaller competition (like Xian in a tournament where he had to face Abegen in Grand Finals...). His reactions, his execution and situational awareness are godlike in this game.

There must be some lag, because this post just showed up from 2012

Got back from EVO today. Great times. The excitement and energy in the ballroom was intense. The BlazeBlue and Marvel finals almost gave me a heart attack. I really hope I can go again next year.

Justin and Champ have been consistent top 8 placers in all four years of MvC3 right?

Justin, Champ, Marn, ChrisG, Viscant were all pretty good from the early days of MVC3. Fanatiq was in there. Clockwork was good. Richard Nyugen was doing some dirty things with Dante.

If you go back and watch the very first WNF that had MVC3 (the day after it came out), it's funny to see how much better Justin Wong was than anybody else. He was already playing his current team and bodying people. Mike Ross was doing MVC2 lightning attacks into super lol.

It's on YouTube.

which of the remaining Marvel Gods will win Evo first, PR Rog or ChrisG

I know PR Rog doesn't give a fuck about this game, since its dead and stupid and everything, but ChrisG doesn't seem really hungry about Evo the way Justin was this year or F.Champ was in 2012

KBR told me that he thinks Marvel is a stupid game too, which kinda surprised me to hear that from him.

I don't even count PR Rog as one of the gods anymore. Or Flocker after this year's Evo. Just down to JWong, FChamp, and ChrisG. There are some folks really working hard that might rise up there, though. I thought RayRay was stellar.

To answer your question, though, ChrisG. PR Balrog's team is the scrub team. I don't mean that as a disservice to him - as far as I know, he created it. But everyone on the planet who just wants easy wins without putting any work in uses PR Balrog's team. It's everywhere. That means everyone has a lot of matchup experience against it, and PR Balrog isn't even practicing the game. Meanwhile, ChrisG is one of a handful of people that use his team, and he still practices and works hard.

Marvel 3 is simultaneously the worst and the best fighting game of all time.

Flocker is still a god as far as I am concerned. Has made top 8 in every tournament and still bodies anyone that isn't one of the top 3s (Justin, FChamp, ChrisG).

ChrisG has a much better chance to win EVO before PRRog. He was the favorite to win this year's as well. PRRog would be a threat to win EVO if he actually gave a crap.

For being a game that gets shit on for being so dumb, there's always so much smart shit going on. No game is more fun in training mode than Marvel vs Capcom 3.

but yes it's fucking dumb

I'll be the first one in line to tell you that marvel is ass, but also fun to play.

I just wasn't expecting to hear that from KBR, who literally gave up his life to play it.

I've been wanting to ask this, and now seems like a good time to bring it up:
Do you all feel that UMvC3 is a worthy successor to MvC2?

Probably the wrong thread to ask this in.

I think UMVC3 is a much superior game to MVC2 in all but a few elements. They are both different games though.

I think you have to say yes, just because MVC2 reached its peak. If MVC3 never came out MVC2 would still be dead. It wasn't growing, and really MVC3 save the Marvel scene.

However I still think there a lot of things about MVC3/UMVC3 that are just absurd, and doesn't really represent what MVC2 was about.
