Don't panic, people. Unless you happen to live in a place with dysfunctional medical care (like, say, frequent abductions of patients from quarantine), things aren't going to be nearly as out of hand as the West African outbreaks.

So far, in 30 years, Ebola has killed less people than Malaria kills every two days. AIDS has killed 30 million people worldwide - Ebola: 2000 in the same time.

If you live in a western nation with a decent healthcare system, it won't be an issue. Ebola isn't as contagious as other viruses like the flu, in addition for a person to even be able to spread the disease they already have to be showing symptoms. The reason the outbreak hasn't been stamped out already is do to poor sanitation, poor healthcare systems, and general lack of knowledge on how to treat those who are infected, often the disease spreads through families who choose to care for the sick themselves.

And this needs to be quoted because it's the truth. But also when you read it the good people fighting the good fight for this are being threatened at the hospital also people spreading rumors that ebola is a myth and that there doing voodoo magic. Also those people who are doing that busted in the hospital and picked up those infected to get them out of there it's just insane for words how bad a country like is not willing to believe this disease is real.

What if I get on an exercise machine and accidentally touch someone's left over goo slop?
are you licking it, shoving it in your eyes or anus? maybe rubbing it in open wounds?

no? then youre fine

just wash your hands and dont roll around vomit or dead bodies

The Hong Kong story was interesting to me. I mean, did the woman have any link to West Africa?

Surely they wouldn't report on anyone with "Ebola symptoms" halfway around the world.

You know how many illnesses present themselves with flu-like symptoms? Lots. So it's easy to scare people and write things for the clicks.

Welp. Every public toilet that you sit on could be a transmission point. Also, that average person touches their nose and eyes hundreds of times a day.

Being able to transmit through sweat or urine is pretty concerning.

People need to seriously chill out.

Yes, Ebola is a scary and horrible disease, but it's really fucking difficult to spread in developed countries. Not because it burns itself out, but because hygiene is leagues better for the vast majority of people, and the protocols and assets to contain any possible outbreaks would be magnitudes better than what they have in West Africa right now.

Also this seems to be a tabloid, so sensationalist title is sensationalist.

Personally I am more worried about mutations.

It feels like every few years we're told to panic by some people. In this case, areas with decent hygiene and healthcare should be fine unless there's some major mutation that happens and we all become zombies.

No need to get worked up yet. Follow the story and keep and eye on it how it develops, but don't have a heart attack from worrying about it. My friend is one of those people trying to scare everyone already...lol

After the SARS epidemic, people there are a lot more on edge about this type of stuff so I'd imagine such stories are more "click-baity" than in other parts of the world.

good idea, i'm not leaving your house

Let's all go to his house.

If worst comes to worst (if it actually does build up to being something that infects hundreds of Westerners and Europeans), everything that can be shut down will be shut down. Humanity can be astoundingly stupid and violent, but when its existence is threatened, it can be amazingly competent.

The most important thing to remember: don't let fear-mongering and paranoia ruin your regular life, even if the ebola outbreak gets worse. Be sensible and cautious, but don't let panic destroy your mind.

That Ebola disease killed Dr Umar Khan few hours ago at Sierra Leona.

He was the most prominent researcher in the world about that virus , RIP.

I'm not too worried.

/stays at home until ebola crisis has resolved itself.

I'm very easily frightened... Suggestible I think the word is? Don't know why I click these threads. Always turns my stomach then I start freaking out. I don't want to go anywhere for the next few months if this crisis continues.

Meanwhile, my parents have informed me I must go to the doctor in a few weeks to get some shots for College.

Literally the only thing keeping my fear somewhat in check are the comments here saying its not actually as bad as the sensationalist titles are saying. Still man, I don't want to leave my house. :(

It's a serious outbreak, but people in the US and other first world countries don't really have to worry about anything other than the whole 'people are suffering and dying in other countries' thing.

It's very very very very very unlikely that a random student from the US will get infected.

It's like H1N1 all over again. Granted I don't usually like to make light of these kinds of things, so for me it always good to have some kind of back-up plan. It also helps that living in British Columbia Canada means that it's easy to escape highly populated areas within a matter of hours if not less depending on where you live. In fact a 15/30 minute drive would put me in the middle of nowhere and far from the the regions largest populated area which is Kelowna BC a city with approximately 117,312 people, the largest in the BC interior.

Watch this short documentary made by Vice...beware some shocking images from the virus at work and people living there also living in denial that it doesn't exist. It really shows the difference between there and here in terms of health care, awareness and knowledge about these kind of viruses.

Ebola won't nearly be as fatal in Europe or America as it is in Africa. Because Europeans and their descendants have a much greater immune system resistance to viruses as a result of surviving through several plagues over the centuries. Europeans also have a higher resistance to HIV.

I don't think there is too much cause for concern really. Bird flu is several times more contagious than ebola for example, a far greater risk of outbreak, but the fatality rate was far lower than predicted when it did spread (even though Tammiflu was found to be useless against it!). Ebola is fairly easy to quarantine.

Highly doubt this would get very far even if it entered the US. It's too deadly to actually spread that much, and transmission is through bodily fluids.

Maybe they got careless. Who knows. Until virus is contained it's gonna be pretty scary if you live in any big city that has flights to Africa.

:|

Are you saying that all three doctors got careless and that it's not possible that something else may have happened due to us not knowing something about the virus?

It doesn't hurt to consider all the options as long as we don't go psycho over it.

Probably doctors working under poor conditions in the biggest outbreak of the Ebola virus.

All it takes is one of them to be careless once for a moment to doom all three.

edit:

i want to stress we dont even know if it was a careless mistake. It could have been because of some kind of freak accident where nobody is to blame.

what kind of dipshit goes to places like this and is like "well ill probably be okay". dude should get a nice hard punch in the face

You wouldn't believe what people get on planes with. I'm an ICU nurse and my unit sometimes receives patients taken ill onboard flights that landed at the airports around London. Often they've been incredibly sick even before getting on the damn plane...

People need to learn to take care of themselves, we only get one life. Nothing is worth not going to the doctor if you're sick.

Humanity can be astoundingly stupid and violent, but when its existence is threatened, it can be amazingly competent.

Climate change (and our refusal to do anything about it) and our continued rapid destruction of our biosphere unfortunately make this an untrue statement.

Humanitarian groups are pulling their people out now. Which will make things worse for people in Africa. You know things are bad when Peace Corps bails on you.
