I won't lie, I am watching this ready to laugh gleefully as it all falls apart. Like a shark swimming around an incipient shipwreck, waiting for the trail of blood to show him where the schadenfreude has fallen helplessly into the water. Or something.

Don't really care about Jay though.

Couldn't Spotify add a Lossless tier for $20 for the niche market that wants it and call it a day? Tidal just seems like a poor idea, Spofity won.

For real. People waiting on this to fail so they can LOL. Jay Z will be ok.

What? Jay Z is probably well past the point of any single business venture leading to financial ruin for himself...

That doesn't mean we can't be happy when this Tidal "charter" "for the artists" bullshit falls flat on its face.

Also, there's rumours of Apple launching their own streaming service in July with the streaming app being built into iOS - rather than an app you download from the app store.

To the shock of absolutely nobody.

For consumers, this is basically free music with ads vs 20$ music, and it's pretty obvious who's going to win that fight. No "lossless audio" marketing gimmick is going to change that.

Non tech guy trying to get into the software world and not knowing what the hell he's backing, just because its trendy to be a tech moghul. Stick to LUUUURRVE Jay Z, damn idiot.

And fu to all the artists that try to back this as life changing, down right disgusting use of publicity.

But how can this be? I thought everyone was ready to abandon Spotify in favor of Tidal when the former threatened to start showing visual ads to subscribers?

I love how apparently they're signing the fucking declaration of independence. Like this bullshit is worth all the press.

Glad this failed. The whole way they presented this was so damn pretentious. Bunch of fucking millionaires patting themselves on the back.

So you're telling me having rich popstars saying they don't make enough wasn't a sound strategy? Well that's shocking.

madonna, daft punk, chris martin... it's the Jurassic Park of pop music trying so hard to show how cool and relevant they are to all the kids out there.

Daft Punk is still incredibly relevant. The rest totally fitting analogy.

It would have been hot as fuck if Thomas Jefferson had thrown a leg up on the desk when he signed that shit, though.

I'm completely out of the loop on all of this... so... can someone fill me in on why Tidal sank to the bottom? The music quality doesn't live up to expectations? UI is terrible? Unfriendly practices with customers and/or artists?

The sad part is she's not even signing it, unless her signature is a scribble line.

Alright I'm a bit out of the loop. What the goddamn hell is Tidal? I'm only vaguely familiar with Spotify but with all the fucking dramatic promo videos you would think this is like some big humanitarian project. But its not, its a Spotify clone? Why did they think it was such a big deal, was that all just marketing bull?

I whinny my fervor lowly, for his length is not as great as those of the Hylian war stallions

So am I ever since they asked people to change their profile pics to blue on twitter in some fucked up awareness campaign, for a... for profit business.

Have you ever heard the phrase "solution in search of a problem"?

It's never a good idea to base a business off of something like that.

It's 2x the price of Spotify and the entire marketing pitch was a out of touch wank fest for the music industry elite

Its a service no one was asking for, except for the richest most powerful artists

I agree. That gif is just full of smug ego, like they are doing a favor for the common man.

LOL.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.

Considering they just took Spotify's UI, it wasn't that.

I mean I guess they might have had some sort of hope in appealing to the super pretentious audiophiles out there but it doesn't look like that panned out either

Whenever I see that Madonna Gif, I cringe so hard. Some of those people (if not all of them) are just clueless of how idiotic they sound (and look) when they announced their plan that stupid streaming service.

The super pretentious audiophiles aren't going to use a subscription based system.

Haven't read too much about Tidal, the only impression I got was a bunch of millionaires whining about the world not being fair to them. Doesn't even make me want to check their website...

Well, it was a product that was very close to the rest (specially its UI). its biggest selling point being the quality of the sound, which is aimed at audiophiles, a rather niche market. It could;ve worked on the general public, but they lost that card when they priced it at 20 bucks per month, twice the price of Spotify premium, which is the most widely adopted streaming service by both industry and consumers.

And then to top it all, its marketing campaign was just awful. Made it sound like it was about disaster relief. Their message about how it is all about the musicians also fell in deaf ears as the ones that were on the signing were the biggest ones in the market.

I would have loved to be a fly on the wall over at Tidal HQ the past few weeks. I wonder if the top brass there honestly believed they were releasing the next big thing and expecting a huge success and are in utter disbelief now at how hard this flopped.

"To make matters worse for Tidal, its main rivals are now surging. On April 20th, Pandora and Spotify occupied positions No. 3 and No. 4 on the U.S. iPhone revenue chart, respectively. This was the first time two music streaming services have hit the top 4 in sales simultaneously. In order to achieve the feat, Pandora and Spotify had to push out Candy Crush Saga out of U.S. iPhone top 4 revenue chart, which is a remarkable achievement.

As a matter of fact, something curious can be seen in Spotify’s download performance right after Tidal media campaign started bashing its allegedly meager payouts. Spotify surged back into the iPad Top 40 download chart on March 31st, right when Tidal’s anti-Spotify invective hit fever peak in American media. This had not happened since November 2014.

It looks like Tidal’s attacks on Spotify and Pandora actually managed to increase public awareness of the services, boosting particularly Spotify’s download performance at the end of March. And now, a few weeks later, the combined revenue performance of the two music apps is hitting a new milestone."
