Bandai Namco Holding SoulCalibur Character Poll, "Probably Working on Something Huge"

Freshmaker

I am Korean.
Personally I'd really like a dream match kinda game with all the characters from the other games rolled into one complete with a version select.

SC1 Maxi vs anyone. It's about time.

Until SCVI when he'll make his glorious return in silver fox form.

Based on how they aged up most of the returning characters for SCV I'd expect him to look exactly the same as before.

Seriously one of my dissapointments with the SCV roster was how many returning characters seemed almost untouched in age. They made Mitsurugi look really cool and grizzled and then seemed to handwave away the passage of time for everyone else because of magic and reasons.

That does sound fun. Even a SC tagteam dream match game with a selfcontained story, like Tekken Tag, would be an interesting mix.

Returning to the characters that made this series popular in the first place would be great but let's move to the important question that no one is asking:

Who will the guest characters be?

Except for very much so in his last proper appearance (SC1) and he was basically just Mitsurugi before that.

His last proper appearance was SC3AE, hell even the custom style in SC3 was actually complete and used in tournaments. That's the Hwang I want. It's unique enough to be in the series, same with Li Long.

Yeah, those--the Chinese blade and the dual nunchaku--were two of the best custom styles.

Dark Souls would be my guess, as well. After all, they've done so much advertising for others' brands in SC, they could always stand to do so for one that Bamco has much more of a say over.

Of course, with SCIV doing as well as it did, and a new Star Wars coming out by the end of this year...think they'd do it again, with Episode 7 characters, this time?

Yeah, those--the Chinese blade and the dual nunchaku--were two of the best custom styles.

They didn't have much work with the Chinese Blade but they added stuff still and Dual Nunchaku were really well done.

The stuff added in SC3AE just gave em more personality.

Mitsurugi, Siegfried, and Cervantes all changed for the better. (Cervantes not because of age, but because of a new body.) Maxi, Kilik and Hilde sorta.

Everyone else does need to be allowed to age too though, barring some exceptions that actually make sense in canon. (Which is far fewer people than they left untouched.)

From what I can tell Japanese developers don't like to see their female characters age past around 30.

They just stuck his body on a CAS style.

But if you want some of the CAS styles back, whatever. That chinese sword one only just barely has anything to do with Hwang, though.

Yeah, it's a problem, and it's getting hard to ignore. They tried to "fix" it with the kids in SCV, but that just backfired. (As it should of.)

Actually, I have a hard time coming up with examples of older female veteran characters in video games at all, especially Japanese games. And I mean physically older, not chronologically but magically stopped aging.

Usually the "team mom" in a JRPG is like 22 or something. Every once in a while a male character is allowed to be over the age of 30.

It's definitely a wide spread problem. Older women don't fit a very narrow view of what some people find appealing, and since so many female characters are designed with attractiveness as their primary attribute (which is a whole other huge issue), it leads to a definite lack of any mature female characters.

A sad and shortsighted situation to be sure, but hopefully one that will be rectified going forward.

The Boss in MGS3 is all I can think of right now. Sometimes a western game will have prominent older female characters if it has an already large cast.

As far as fighting games go, Gouketsuji/Power Instinct's Oume and Otane, twin kickass grannies, are pretty much the shining example of this in action. Even for a "gag" fighting series, there's no denying how badass they are (though it helps the Saturn, NeoGeo and Taito X games are solid games in themselves). And they were even joined by a new set of twin grannies as rivals in the most recent release a few years ago.

Pity that Gouketsuji/Power Instinct was so niche.

SCVI guest character is Carol from The Walking Dead.

Well since they like to jump sharks with Star Wars and all.... Why not go with White Glint:

latest

May as well one up themselves.

Dude...Chinese Blade is Assassin's fighting style wholly lifted. Assassin is based off the unique moves Hwang has had since Soul Blade plus xianghua and Yunseong. If it has Hwang's head kick throw....it's based off Hwang...

... I'm having trouble reconciling "Hwang is different from Xianghua because he was different in SCIII" with "Hwang's SCIII style is from Assassin whose style was from Hwang from SC1" Which is it? You said Hwang's style was different from Assassin's.

Hwang/Assassin/Chinese Blade all have Xianghua influences since SC1 but has enough unique moves that make him a separate character worth playing. Just because he was clonish before SCII didn't mean he had tools and moves that separated him from the templates he was based on. Simply saying Play Xianghua is dismissive because you play Hwang different than you would Xianghua.

3AAAB and 3KKK

Those were typically the Hwang unique identifiers.

Sounds more like they're the same or different depending on which one is convenient as an argument for why that bland-ass Hwang deserves to come back.

Why you gotta be so negative and try and put down a character that other people like?

That's all that argument was. Hwang was a really fun to play with no matter how "bland" he may be. Hell Kilik is bland as hell but people love that staff style that was ripped from Seong Mi-Na. See how silly that argument is?

There's a reason Seong Mina was left out of the arcade version of 2 and didn't return (and wasn't represented by someone else) in 5.

Mina was fun in 4 even if she sucked. Getting to whack people hard with power shots and hitting them in the nuts in fun for me.

So assuming SC6 is coming, when do we expect to see it? Namco won't pit Tekken 7 and SC6 head to head, but we don't yet know when Tekken 7 will see a console release.

My guess is that if Tekken 7 hits consoles this year we won't even hear much about SC6 until 2016. If Tekken 7 is 2016 (especially late 2016) then I could see a SC6 announcement as early as E3 this year.

Tekken x SF is still in the works as well, but I can't imagine that will have any impact on a SC6 release.

I don't think T7 will be a thing for consoles for a while, as it just got launched in arcades in March of this year. More than likely, Bamco will keep it in arcades for at least another year or so, to keep the arcade operators happy.

If that's the case, then there wouldn't be anything standing in the way of SC6.

I'll be so giddy if zasalamel makes a comeback. That guy is rad as heck.

Also, if this gets a Nintendo console release (I'm assuming that this will be out during a post Wii U world) I'd love to see Hyrule Warriors Link be the guest. He has a rad design and it'd be cool to see that guy get sucked into a totally different dimension!

If SC6 is happening, I think it'l be announced at e3. Like you said, they're not going to put T7 out around the same time, and seems like they're still doing a lot of work on the arcade version. Add to that, the MO for the past couple tekkens has been to give the arcade an update and then port the update to consoles. I think T7 is at least 1.5 years off. So, hopefully, SC6 would come first.

More teases by Verendus seem to hint that we may see it at E3. Considering what he's been spouting has lined up so far for the sake of the next DMC, along with everything else we've seen, I'm daring to get a bit more hyped!

It's a close race between I & III for my top pick.

I can get behind this.

Yeah, and there's a reason they brought her (and Sophy) back in a hurry.

and didn't return (and wasn't represented by someone else) in 5.

Talim didn't return in 5, either. Clearly there was a "good reason" for that, too. (looks at character poll with Talim blowing everyone up)

SC5 roster was horribly selected. That's "the reason". Don't use 5 as an indication of popularity. Mina was WAY higher on the poll than a lot of characters who made it in. Lol, Lizardman.

I'm not talking about popularity. I'm talking about redundancy. It would have been worse if we had another chinese sword user and another staff user or another sword/shield user (Cassandra) and still no Talim or Zasalamel or anyone else who style isn't basically already in there.

Yeah, I'm curious about a T7 Unlimited/BR. If that happens then it pretty much guarantees SC6 comes first. Although, given the fact that T7 will be at Evo this year, it makes me think Namco may have plans to have a console release before Evo 2016.

Why bother getting the arcade T7 at Evo 2015 if you're just going to have to do it again at Evo 2016 without a US release? I think having T7 at Evo 2015 kind of locks in a console release before Evo 2016.

Granted, you could still see SC6 by March 2016 to make it onto the current fiscal year, then T7 by June to hit in time for Evo, give SC6 some breathing room and land in the next fiscal year. Although if SC6 hits in March that more than likely puts it head to head with SF5 which would not be good.

I'm a fan of Zasalamel too. His design is badass. Never got to play him in 3 and 4 but would love the chance to.
