I have no issue with this. In the other thread we got a number of quotes from Pacific Islanders that found the costume offensive and/or disrespectful. Disney admitted to their mistake and chose to pull the costume to show respect to these people.

And now some of you are getting outraged and are telling Pacific Islanders what they need to be offended about.

You mean the Polynesians who complained? Because again that's who got them to pull it, people from that culture.
Amplified by a lot of non-Polynesian bandwagon jumpers, no doubt.

But the result is the same, we now have a world where companies will be more shy to try out non-Eurocentric costumes.

A win for culture?

If you're a white guy dressing up as a Polynesian, or any other race, then it's racist. Which is a shame because Disney's done a good job on the movie otherwise hiring Polynesian actors and doing research on the culture and all that. Honestly, do you know what blackface is?

I'd ask you the same question. You've just proven yourself to have no clue.

None of y'all read the really short article I see. The last thread was all about blaming white folk for speaking for Polynesians.... want to know who Disney listened to?

So hi folks maybe instead of yelling about SJWs you could read the article....

You mean the link to a BuzzFeed article featuring six tweets against the costume?

Guys, I came up with a solution.

Where's my paycheck Disney?

If you get rid of the grass skirt thingy, this could make a pretty decent Tron costume. Just need a matching frisbee and helmet.

Damn those racist 10 year olds who want to mock these cartoon characters by dressing up as them! Racistsssssss! I bet they buy black-eyed peas, too... And eat them!

Well they're kids. They don't know any better. Still those kids need to be taught about that shit. Hell I was introduced to racism and prejudice and stereotyping as concepts at about that age.

You'd tell your son that he can't dress up as this Disney character because he's white? This isn't fucking black face, no matter how much you're trying to make it out to be.

at last, for christ's sake
I wonder if putting an ethnicity warning on these types of costumes would be a solution. There are certainly some Maui kids who would want to dress up - so if Disney could put a warning or label on the box advising about the nature of the costume and who it is intended for, that would prevent an inadvertent racism while letting Maui kids have a strong character they can dress up as for Halloween. Perhaps the leading stores that sell costumes (Walmart etc.) could train their clerks to make sure the costume warning labels are followed strictly, and potentially refuse sale in some cases. This system could be extended to other costumes.

so what you're saying is, sell the costume only to people of a specific race, like the one represented by said costume?
I hope I misunderstood because it sounds like one of the worst ideas imaginable

Was there a massive outcry for the removal from Polynesians or was it more of a couple of folks and Disney decided to play it safe?

That's not to say there aren't legitimate complaints.

So dressing up as a specific character is stereoptyping? You do realize that blackface was meant as a way to mock and demean African Americans by exaggerating them into cartoon caricatures. That is not what this costume is doing.

You were taught avoidance, it seems. A terrible solution to a very real problem.

White people dressing up in a mammy costume or true blackface with eyes bugging and big red lips = racist.

People of any color, especially children, dressing up as cartoon characters of another race =/= racist. Honestly, do you even know what racism is?

It's pretty entertaining, actual..

Being an overzealous SJW, and being of the race in question regarding said scenario are not mutually exclusive things though, and don't automatically make said complaints and grievances legitimate.

Pfft, who cares what the brown people think?

It amazes me how so many of the people in this thread think Disney just HAVE to put out a tacky brown skinned costume. Like, what?

They're not dressing up as a Polynesian, though. They're dressing up as Maui.

Maui is a Polynesian demi-god...

I thought we all figured out that a clear costume was a stupid fucking idea in the last thread

They should just do some temporary tattoos and be done with it, but the fucker has like eleventy thousand

As always, I'm extremely conflicted on matters of cultural appropriation. At an initial glance, it always seems silly and there's a lot of reasons to dismiss it. But then if you really think about the concept of commoditizing a culture, it becomes way murkier than it starts out as.

I really lack the understanding needed to form an opinion on it. But hey, if pacific islanders complained about it, I don't see what the harm is in taking it off the market.

Disney caught flack from pacific islanders for the movie already. Which probably helped this decision.

Need to remember that. It's not just sjws. And it was this character specifically.

Which tbh is kinda stupid because Disney went to pretty extreme measures to try to keep it 100, to the point of casting that random Polynesian girl as Moana for a goddamn voice role

Also fucking hell this got heavy fast, I'm out
