Outside of a few obvious examples like Nowi and Tits McGee from Fates (honestly can't even remember her name atm), the designs in the newer games aren't that pandering. The bigger issue is that they replaced the excellent artist from Path of Radiance/Radiant Dawn with a pretty generic artist for the 3DS games.

If they make that character a girl, they can even pander to the Katawa Shoujo waifu crowd!

Camilla's character design / concept is actually pretty neat, oversexualization aside. She's certainly a more interesting character than the Hoshido counterpart, redhead peg knight.

not sure what makes spring man's design "bad" while a character like minmin "genius" . the latter is really bland and seems very pandery. i don't get the love.
Because Spring Man is not a "waifu," see all the people who say that he's boring and then say that Ribbon Girl is a good design lol.

However I do think Minmin is a great design ignoring the fan reaction. She's as much of an archetype as Spring Man is, and her color scheme is pretty solid too. My only problem with her is that the Ramen theme wasn't enough, and they had to make her design asymmetrical. I think that's kinda stupid both mechanically (unbalance with different handedness) and visually (when not using dragon for left arm).

I've got some bad news for you.

Byte & Barq, with Min Min and Helix up there as well. I don't quite get the Twintelle popularity (ok, I actually do), but all the designs are good nonetheless, just a matter of taste. However, I'm willing to bet a later downloadable character will ultimately have the best design.

Camilla! Thank you, it was on the tip of my tongue.

I married Hinoka in my first Birthright playthrough. Can't remember why. I think I just wanted Kana to have that bright red hair.

There's some interesting designs in Awakening/Fates but the art really lacks distinction IMO. It looks the same as about 10 anime airing this season.

Spring Man has a real "Nintendo" feel to his design with the playful corckscrew 'do topping (HA!) it all off. But man, as soon as I saw Kid Cobra, I knew who I wanted to play as first. Really looking forward to the testpunch for a chance to check it out before release.

Gotta be Min Min. Wish I liked byte and barq more than I do.

I do like that there is a more diverse cast here than is typical for Nintendo, I hope that trend continues going forward, and I hope there are more non-white human characters in the updates.

no. it's just a vibe minmin and twintelle exude. ribbon girl, princess peach, toadette are cute animated girls that dont scream waifu.

I mean, I can see Twintelle, since she's currently the majority's favorite. But I still fail to see how Min Min "screams" it. Just feels like you're pointing them out just because they happen to be the most popular.

holy shit, min min and twintelle are DESTROYING everyone else. twintelle all the way, though. i fell in love the moment i saw her

Nintendo is finally realizing what fat asses can do for their brand. Just look at Zelda in Breath of the Wild, and now Twintelle in ARMS.

I wouldn't be surprised if every new Nintendo release has at least one fat ass in it going forward.

All four girls are attractive. Hard to say which you'd marry, though. I mean yeah, Min Min's cool, but she might insist on eating ramen every night, which could lead to arguments, since the high salt content would spike blood pressure and make you and her irritable.

No one ever thinks these things through. Marriage is no trifling matter!

Here are the fighter icons! In order:

Twintelle - Ribbon Girl
Mechanica - Ninjara
Helix - Master Mummy
Byte & Barq - Min Min
Kid Cobra - Spring Man

Looks like they also each have their own ARMS-universe take on the copyright/restricted symbol??

I want that Master Mummy icon on a purple shirt or hoodie NAO.

Edit: Byte & Barq icon looks like someone getting titty-fucked to me.

Oh my sweet summer child.

But yeah, not sure what you find more pandering about Min Min's design than Ribbon Girl's. I mean RG is literally an idol, by definition designed to appeal to a particular fan base. But I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree.

Nintendo's artists are sooooooooo gooooooooood

That art of Mechanica just made her shoot way up in my book

The paintings do have a very similar style/digital brushwork to BotW's promo art. I wonder if Takumi Wada also did them.

EDIT: He's credited in MK8D, so it's very likely.

Love the splashes of colour on that Mechanica picture. In a way, the water splotches kind of evoke the same sense of grit and sweat that you would get from working on a machine.

people constantly comment on minmin and twintelle "thickness" and "booty" and calling their designs genius while trashing similarly designed characters like spring man and ninjara. not that their designs are bad but i just thinks there's a bit of bias towards these type of characters that's more due to how "attractive" they are than their designs per se. it's not the end of the world or anything, just something i noticed.

I don't know how to word it, but I I find Twintelle somewhat repulsive, I don't know if it's the way her hair moves in relation to her body, I find it disoriented.
(the reaction to her on the poll screams "honeymoon phase" honestly)

Going for Spring Man, his design is simple and clear.

Mechanica and Police officer + K9 are close second, I like mechanical fighters.

I have a feeling Mechanica would be 10x more popular if they showed her out of her suit in-game. Like someone said, she's like DVA x Tracer.

I wish Ribbon girl's artwork showed more personality like the ones of Mechanica and Spring Man. So far, she seems to be the most bland of all the fighters. It doesnt help that her color scheme makes her look like a generic cheerleader rather than a pop idol.

I may prefer other characters design-wise (B&B, Min Min, Helix, Spring Man), but I suspect Ribbon Girl will be one of the most fun to play. She has a multi-jump for dancing through the air, and a dive-kick for quickly reaching the ground. Her mix-up game will be insane. Also intrigued by Kid Cobra's multi-dash dodge.

I love how the home stage for Byte & Barq looks like something out of Beverly Hills Cop. Fits the policeman theme. You can practically hear Axel F in the background!

I totally missed this thread, but man is it huge lol.

Twintelle wins. She's got that Beyonce/Bayonetta swag.
