Steam Summer Sale '17 Hidden Gems & Under-The-Radar Recommendations thread

My vote for an underrated goes to
Hand of Fate

A deck builder rouge-like where the deck you makes the events you encounter. The combat plays like the Arkham series but the real fun is the encounters and the options given. At $5 it's worth the price.
The combat really turned me off of this game. I can't stand Arkhams combat either so I guess that kinda makes sense. It's a shame because everything else in the game is fantastic.

I don't really have time to write a long recommandation, but I'll add Militia to the list of great suggestions in the thread. Simple, easy to play, hard to master. A 'just another round' type of game. No bells or whistles, just pure strategy game design.

This looks amazing.

You could buy Etherlords 1 & 2.

Ah, bliss. The best part of a Steam sale is being recommended something I didn't even know I already owned.

I can third this one. I plat'd it on ps4, and it's one of my favorite gaming experiences this gen. How you react to encounters can add new encounters to your deck -- not just new weapons and stuff, but actual encounters. So if one card gives you a choice, your pick might have you find a new map. This adds a card to your next game. That card, if you play it and succeed in the encounter, might lead you to a cave [scrapping the map card, adding a cave card to your next game].. next game you find a big monster in the cave, and if you kill it you get an weapon card added to your deck next game, etc. It really allows them to flesh out an rpg like experience in a deck game.

Combat is fine imo... it can be quite difficult at first when you've got no good cards, but by the end of the game you've got some wildly good weapon/etc cards and combat is super fun.

Divinity Dragon Commander is a steal at $4 / 90÷ off. Same studio that did Divinity Original Sin. Strategy / RTS hybrid with a dash of RPG dialogue trees and city management. Surprisingly well written too.

Greater than the sum of its parts. Highly highly recommended.

Alright. I'm seeing lot of recommends for House in Fata Morgana.

My question is it just story only, or is there some sort of puzzle/game play aspect as well?

How is Final Fantasy 6 despite the graphics, is it a good version of the game?

And is Final Fantasy 4 the DS version with the augments and stuff? And going along with that, is it worth it at all to get the After Years along with 4, or is it as bad as people claim?

Edit: oh sorry, I thought this was the regular thread and not the hidden gems one...I'll just leave it here in case anyone wants to respond

It's a visual novel so it's all reading. There's some parts where you make decisions but it's not like Ace Attorney or Zero Escape where there's a lot of puzzle solving.

Those are old, old reviews. Little King's Story was fixed some months back by Durante, and nearly all of the old problems are gone. So if you read this, please give the game another look.
Are you sure? I'm was going to buy it but there really bad reviews AFTER the patch, even on the discussion board there some people still complaining, but they dont specify if they have tested the patched version.
A large number of issues were fixed and improvements made in my patch for this, but there are also still some remaining issues. Those are generally rooted in the custom scripting system the game uses, and fixing them would basically require reverse engineering the entire thing.

So be aware that while the game is much improved compared to its initial release, it is not perfect.

Tiny & Big is only 99c. I finally got around to playing it the other day and I'm loving it so far. Highly recommended to anyone after a 3D platformer.

Not sure were they mentioned but i would like to recommend both GO games:

Lara Croft GO (-66%, 3.39€)

Hitman GO Definitive Edition (-75%, 1.99€)

I love them both. And have them on iOS, Android, PC...
They are great puzzle games and Lara Croft GO recently received The Mirror of Spirits expansion for free. These 2 are very cheap and must buy imo.

I've got Lara Croft GO on my Android tablet. Really good game. I prefer it to the big budget Tomb Raider games we get now to be honest, because despite the difference in gameplay I do think it's more in keeping with the old Tomb Raider games and what they were about. I could say the same for Guardian of Light too actually (and I assume Temple of Osiris, but I haven't got around to playing that yet.)

I jumped in for Hollow Knight even though I'm not a huge metroidvania player. It's fucking great!

for the record the last MV game I played was Gucamelee

Owlboy guys. Owlboy. I will try to find time to do a write up on my experience with it so far. It's great.

2+2=5

The Amiga Brotherhood
Lost Castle is a surprisingly good roguelike game that's both fun and challenging. Definitely worth checking out if you like such games.

Another beat'em up rogue-whatever is Rampage Knights for 4.19 euro

I just started it so i can't say a lot apart that looks fun(but everything has to be unlocked, from classes to game modes!) and has very positive reviews on steam, the artstyle isn't the best but in the beginning i didn't like the artstyle of Archibal's Adventure, another game from the same developers, but then it become one of my favorite games ever.

Any indie/AA games with a proper story and good gameplay? Aka not a rogue like, not visual novel and not fighting game esque gauntlets.

The (kickstarted) Shadowrun games(already recommended earlier in this thread) have excellent gameplay and an interesting stories as well. Bundle for all three games is very cheap during this sale:

http://store.steampowered.com/bundle/532/Shadowrun_Complete_Collection/

Of those, I'd say Dragonfall has the most interesting story and Hong Kong has slighty more refined gameplay. Returns is the one both of those build upon.

EDIT: This thread is really great/bad for my wallet. I thought I bought the games I was going to for this sale, but I've added a bunch more after reading through this thread.

Have some indie RPGs that need a lot more love.

Masquerada: Songs and Shadows (-25%, $18.74)
fGF3BuE.jpg

Masquerada is an isometric real-time with pause RPG that feels closest to a JRPG spirit to me. Its entirely linear; there are no sidequests, decision-making, and you can't revisit areas unless the narrative brings you there. That's not a bad thing though because the narrative is really good, with a fleshed out cast and a neat world. It also has a great atmosphere and a stellar soundtrack. The voice acting is also top notch because they got a bunch of industry veterans like Matthew Mercer, Jennifer Hale, and Dave Fennoy. If you want a great narrative-driven RPG look no further.

Aurion: Legacy of the Kori-Odan (-50%, $7.49)
UXGoq89.jpg

Aurion is a JRPG styled RPG made by a dev team in Cameroon and it plays like a cross between a 2-D platformer and a Tales game. Aurion is set in a fantasy world inspired by different cultures from all around Africa like ones from Cameroon, Nigeria, and Mali. It takes a little bit to find its stride, mainly when it comes to its narrative, but when it does its become a really good game. Like Masquerada it also has an interesting world and fun cast, I especially like the main antagonist.

Cosmic Star Heroine (-20%,$11.99)
SdozqPq.jpg

Cosmic Star Heroine is Zeboyd's new game in the spirit of Phantasy Star and Lunar. CSH nails that early/mid 90's JRPG aesthetic and has a great soundtrack. Its combat is also fast paced and fun and there's a plethora of quality of life improvements that give the game a great sense of progression. The only real flaw the game is that unlike Masquerada and Aurion, its writing is rather weak and merely serviceable, the plot is bog standard JRPG and the cast are all pretty one-note. Still if you want a RPG that plays like a classic JRPG, Cosmic Star Heroine will definitely deliver.

Had a few questions about some of the "lesser known" games sitting on my wishlist. Hoping I can get some clarifications on a few of them:

1. Spooky's Jump Scare Mansion: HD Renovation: Is this just the original version with a graphical upgrade? I enjoyed the original free version and would like to run through it to completion, but I'm wondering if this paid version adds anything else.

2. Higurashi When They Cry: A bit back I remember that work was being done to include the voice acting from the PS2 version, in addition to other mods. Did that ever get released?

3. Final Fantasy V: Really would like to play through this one with the superior translation, but I don't see any community mods that fix some of the uglier parts of the mobile port (like the "busty" male characters, or an option to replace the sprites entirely with the original ones).

4. Outlast 2: Not exactly "indie", but I literally cannot get any opinions from anyone here on the game. How does it compare to the original? If it's just "more of the same" without much improvement, I could probably wait until it drops further.

5. The House in Fata Morgana: Lots of people raving about this one, but I was just wondering if it had voice acting, as well as the length of the VN itself.

1. Yeah, patches for the ones on Steam are all finished.

2. Nope, doesn't have VA.

No voice acting, took me around 30 hours

Bought Hollow Knight and Salt and Sanctuary so far. Already have Valdis Story and Ys. Don't care for roguelikes/ lites. Are there are any cheap kind of old-style sidescrolling/ isometric action games I should look at?

Wuppo - $5.99/£4.39/5.99€

header.jpg

One of the surprises so far. I found this game from Wok's algorithm to find hidden gems (I think) in the monthly Steam thread and it looked cool but I forgot to put on my wishlist, when the sale started I was browsing the discovery queue and it appeared again so I decided to buy for discounted price and because I found the artstyle quite charming.

It's a platformer/metroidvania/whateverdefinition where you paly as that cute rounded thing who is a Wum. The game already starts strong with a fun dialogue where you can take two routes with being a cool Wum or just a jerk to the NPC and it was funny. The lore so far feels rich and I'm curious to discover more about this world.

I strongly recommend it

A "not-Sonic" game with level design that flows incredibly well. The powers add a lot of variety to the gameplay and while I wasn't sold on the combat at first, the bosses get more and more fun as it progresses.

^ Another gem that I recommend

I bought Spark before the sale, while i did find some bosses lackluster the game is really good with a great OST and unlock more campaigns as you finish the game.
