Steam Summer Sale '17 Hidden Gems & Under-The-Radar Recommendations thread

Thank you all for the opinions! Is there a chance it could get a bigger price drop?

I took a bit to "get into it" really rounded into amazing form after I understood the compass and map...plus the first decent powers.

I had the "large area WTF" for the first hour, but now it is finally breaking me of Rocket League. Just love it.

I need some point & click recommendations. my wife mainly plays P &C or platformers. She has all of the big name point and clicks likes.
Paradigm is probably one she hasn't heard of that came out not too long ago. After I watched some Twitch steams of it, along with reading the glowing Destructoid review, I purchased it as well.
Paradigm is on sale for $11.99

metacritic 84% steam reviews 98% positive
"Paradigm is a surreal adventure game set in the strange and post apocalyptic Eastern European country of Krusz. Play as the handsome mutant, Paradigm, who's past comes back to haunt him in the form of a genetically engineered sloth that vomits candy. Paradigm’s unfortunate life begins at DUPA genetics, a company who sells prodigy children to the rich and powerful who don’t want to leave their inheritance to their poor excuse for biological children. Something went wrong during Paradigm’s growing process and he was left horribly mutated. To save their reputation, DUPA dumped the hideous infant in a nearby post Neo-Soviet abandoned town, forcing him to fend for himself."

Academagia is pretty good. Think Harry Potter year 1 minus all the heroic stuff. Year 2 is finally supposed to come out sometime in near future.

This definitely looks like it's worth 8 bucks! Thanks!

I have! I should have mentioned that one too; I had a ton of fun with it. I don't think I got all the endings, so I might go back to it some time.

Curse this thread... so far I've bought

Dead Cells
OlliOlli2: Welcome to Olliwood
Pharaoh Rebirth+
Unexplored
Valdis Story: Abyssal City
Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun

And I'm sure there will be more to come.

If you love Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, please buy Valdis: Abyssal City. Only played it for 30 mins so far but I already know I am going to love it.

Thanks for the recommend guys!

Yo, Dead Cells is on sale for $12.40 on Bundlestars, and with the promo code RED5, you get an additional 5% off. Ended up paying $11.78 for it.

edit- Oops, meant to put this in the main thread. I'll leave it here tho.

I'm seconding the recommendations for Unexplored. It's a fantastic little roguelike that's filled with surprises, which I honestly find rare in most roguelikes these days.
Are there any other under-the-radar recent CRPGs/RPGs besides Age of Decadence, Battle Brothers, and Starcrawlers?

Serpent in the Staglands, Dungeon Rats (an Age of Decadence combat-focused spinoff), Expeditions: Viking, Banner Saga 2, Avadon 3: The Warborn, and Cosmic Star Heroine spring to mind.

There's probably more but they're too under-the-radar for me.

I'm a big platformer fan and although the discounts on these two games aren't super high, they're still worth picking up if you're a fan of old school platformers. I see Hollow Knight/Axiom Verge/Guacamelee mentioned all the time but rarely these:

Rosenkreuzstilette

ss_9a23165a46c48fbbba882b4c0d39f431dafbb39a.600x338.jpg

Basically anime Megaman. An old indie Japanese Megaman clone that's a bit wonky on Windows 10 (fixes supposedly incoming), but absolutely worth picking up if you're a Megaman fan. Doesn't fall into the ultra-difficulty trap that many Megaman clones do, just an all around well designed good time. Also super anime.

Alwa's Awakening

ss_be56c907987602710c4aaef8dae76bbbc2454869.600x338.jpg

A mix between Simon's Quest (Castlevania 2), Metroid, and Battle Kid. A bit slow, but still recommended. Fun sequence breaks are possible, the art and music are both great, and the game doesn't overstay its welcome.

Just to add some more recommendations

Party Hard
header.jpg

Fun little game where you go to every party killing everyone because they're too loud. The game never takes itself seriously and is fun.

Megabyte Punch
header.jpg

Hard to describe this game but think of a beat em up platforming game, where you pick up enemy parts adding it to yourself. The customisation is good and while the story was nonexistent, playing co-op was a blast.
And I'm unsure why boss fights turn into smash

While not an under the radar game Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is at the lowest price and has not been on sale for a while.
header.jpg

Do you want to be a ninja to cut shit up while an amazing soundtrack plays in the metal gear universe. While short Revengence is fun and chaotic from start to finish with a great combat system. Just final boss is one of the best final bosses I've ever faced.

Transformers Devestation
header.jpg

Do you want to be a transformers destroying shit up while having and hearing the OG Transformers cast in their own universe. Does that sound similar to Revengence? That's becuase it was developed by the same Devs (Platinum studio). The games play the same but this game has multiple playable characters and is a love letter to the original transformers.

Now if you had to pick one over the other...

The Typing of the Dead: Overkill
header.jpg

Want to learn how to type better? How about typing the right words to kill Zombies in the House of the Dead game. Its really just House of the Dead, but with typing. If you're not that interested in typing, then at least House of the Dead: Overkill is included.

Ok, Last game because I need to end this or else I'll go on forever

Call of Juarez Gunslinger
header.jpg

A Western FPS where you see a cowboy recount his tales of adventure. The game is solid and the story will fuck with you for example
There's a choice to be made where your character goes down a mine shaft, only to have a stray bullet blow up all the TNT, destroying the mine. When asked how he got out of there the narrator says that he remembered it wrong and took the other path. The game then rewinds everything to the beginning of the level where your character takes the other path
. The duels are intense and it has a great atmosphere. If you've ever loved those western movies, this is for you.

Wyv and Keep (1,49€)
Awesome coop arcade game, hardcore rooms for 2 friends: http://store.steampowered.com/app/263960/Wyv_and_Keep_The_Temple_of_the_Lost_Idol/
ss_ecb4490cb09340458188e2994626c463beb9188e.600x338.jpg

A co-op game to play with the missus for 1.49€? Don't mind if I do! (as a bonus, she has long blonde hair and I have black hair, like the game's characters!).

Current haul (I'm keeping it deliberately small due to backlog and finances):
Shadow of Mordor 4€
Pharaoh Rebirth+ 4€
Wyv and Keep 1.50€

It actually has through modding and it's a great work, you can find it here, easy to patch: https://github.com/07th-mod

Lets you use PS2 sprites too, which are not amazing but at least on par with the MG ones, but enables the CGs which is always a welcome addition.

Is there a recommended list of which sprites, music, and etc you should enable?

I'm conflicted: I want a really good, well written horror VN experience. I know that allegedly Fata Morgana has that, but Higurashi is much cheaper and has voice acting.

Keep in mind that Fata Morgana is 1 complete purchase, while Higurashi has many episodes that probably end up more expensive than Fata Morgana in the end.
That said, Fata Morgana isn't really horror in the same sense as Higurashi. Higurashi is definitely more horror.

It has plently of fanservice in its writing, but when the horror/super natural hits it hits hard.

Higurashi is split up into a number of chapters. The first four chapters are "question arcs," which are designed to introduce mysteries that the player can try to explain. They are followed by answer arcs. Right now, there's only one answer arc on Steam. Each chapter works as a standalone story, but if you'll be bothered by a lack of resolution, you should probably avoid Higurashi for now.

Fata Morgana is excellent, but if you really want a horror story, it might not scratch that itch. It has creepy and disturbing elements, but it's not really in the horror genre.

Wingamestore is even less.

Look, even with a sale yall should be using Enhanced steam and Isthereranydeal.com before you buy Anything.

I got Dead Cells for $11 and I added like 20 games from this thread to the wishlist to watch.

Glad the sale is another week.

But, I was hoping that we'd get the full monthly humble reveal before the end of the sale though. Kind of sucks because I don't want to buy too much, and get a couple in the monthly.

Probably gonna risk it since I have a lot of money saved up thanks to card selling.

Can any one recommend some good puzzle games ? I just finished the 3 HexCells games, bought SquareCells en thinking about buying The Witness or Lyne. But are there any other good games I should look at ? Something relaxing (no time limit)

Got 27 Euro from Slightly Mad Studios as a former backer of Project Cars.

Browsed Steam Store. What to buy with that sum?

Fallout 4, Asseto Corsa and Witcher 3 sounded interesting.

Then I said "Screw those games" and decided to buy the following:

House in Fata Morgana, Kero Blaster and Mad Father.

Thanks for this, I'm always looking for more Metroidvania!

My under the radar:
Epistory, it's a typing RPG. Think of an earthy fairy like fantasy RPG but all your attacks are typing ala Typing of the Dead. The story is surprisingly good and there's quite a bit of voiced narration not unlike Bastion (not as good but that's a high bar to clear).

2+2=5

The Amiga Brotherhood
Is there an easy way to categorize AAA titles during the sales for searching?

Pick the "indie" tag, in the middle of the address of the page should appear "tags=492", add a minus like this: "tags=-492" and you will get all the games without the indie tag(not every game you get is AAA though), i guess this works with every tag.

Isotiles and Akin
They are short but good puzzle games
Also Paint it back

So he can play in the pro at 30 fps?

If you're playing at 30FPS either way does it matter? PC port has some issues anyways so why not?

They also might have the pro hooked up to a 4K TV vs the PC hooked up to a 1080p monitor.

They were already on the fence on picking it up for the pro, so there might be a reason.

Yup. Used to be that you had to buy characters and sets online, or buy the toys and use codes to get them in game, but ever since they shut down Disney Infinity, they made all content available for no extra charge on the Steam versions. So this should be everything 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0 had to offer for only $15.

I only wish there was a modding community to keep adding to this platform.

tell me about it.
