These Coloradans say Earth is flat. And gravity’s a hoax. Now, they’re being persecut

These sorts shouldn't be allowed to reproduce but unfortunately they're the ones that usually have a bunch of kids for them and their peers to indoctrinate.

Oh of course, top of a new page.

So, the founder of the group discussed in the OP is my uncle. My dad mentioned to me a few months he was getting into this Flat Earth nonsense, but I had no idea he was *this* far gone.

He has a looooooong history of falling for scams and pushing woo. His whole family is also like this -- the last time I caught up with him he was partnering up with a doctor in South America trying to sell "suppressed Cancer cure" Amygdalin, which was banned in the US because it causes cyanide poisoning: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amygdalin

It pains me, given that I'm employed by a university to teach critical thinking.

Sounds like he's rehashing all these old conspiracy theories from the early days of the internet. The stuff that doesn't have documentation. I used to read those for fun, that's how I learned that the Earth has a second Sun under its crust, which provides energy for the subterranean globe.

The residents of which are lizardmen. Man, surface life is so boring...

So, since a round earth is apparently a giant lie to these people, what is the purpose of the lie?

If it's a global conspiracy to keep people thinking that the world isn't flat, why? What's the point?
To trick us into believing the ancient Greeks existed.
All part of Big Olive Oil's plan.

And/or reptilians. I wonder what the shift will be if/once orbital flights become doable for the average person (at least once in their lives). You have ex-astronauts who believe in ETs and UFO's and such, but I've yet to read of a single former spacefarer who believes the world is flat.

Feels like believing in greys and shit is a lot more benign than this bullshit

No, they'd probably tell you outer space is fake, too.

Or the more ridiculous theory of inverse

I looked at that inverse picture.... And I closed my eyes for 30 seconds, let out a huge sigh, and is disappointed that there are people who believe this shit.

Maybe I'm just not woke enough 🤔

I have a bad memory for remembering facts and information. I pray to Cthulhu that I don't ever run into and engage in a debate with a Flat-Earther because I'm sure I'll lose the debate mainly because these fools resort to a shouting match instead of actually debating.

I also bet that if you show them this image
barred-spiral-galaxy-ngc-1300.jpg

They'll tell you that's the solar system and the sun in the middle

but the earth is at the middle of the solar system! the sun is just one of the things that goes around the earth

I mean, yea, way back when in the Middle Ages or whenever the fuck, people believed the earth was flat cause hey didn't have the technological abilities to prove otherwise.

What's theses dummies excuse?

I got an idea, shoot them all into space so they can see
The earth is round as fuck.

Not only does their 'solution' make no sense, but I can't really fathom why there would be a conspiracy to trick people into believing in a round earth.

So, since a round earth is apparently a giant lie to these people, what is the purpose of the lie?

If it's a global conspiracy to keep people thinking that the world isn't flat, why? What's the point?

I have a feeling none of them have an actual explanation for this other than it's just the government(s) trying to keep the population under control.

I'm not well versed in this inanity but last I saw they believed that flights and cruises avoid the edge by going in a circle or flying over the north pole or some shit

You know, the process for earning a CPL isn't exactly commensurate with that for becoming a neurosurgeon. You'd think one of these assholes would try to get on the inside so they could expose the great global (planar?) conspiracy.

Under control from what though? What enlightenment does knowledge of a Round Earth keep people from achieving?

Obviously there's no logical answer or explanation to those questions, but I just have to wonder how much distrust has been sown in these people to make them avoid the very principles of logic and reason.

Sooo... Do they know that people can go over walls right? I mean, they believe it goes on infinitely so it wouldn't matter, I presume.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

For some this is basically anti-intellectualism dressed up as a proto religious belief system. For most it's all about belief not proof. Flat-Earthers are basically religious. It's essentially a belief that makes them feel special, important, meaningful. Even the well educated 'believe' this shit. - The Men Who Believe The Earth Is Flat
Let me tell you about John.

John says he's not crazy. I believe him.
"I am a normal person," he says.
But John isn't a 'normal' person. Not quite.
Well, he is and he isn't.
John is a Doctor. A medical doctor.
Actually, John is more than a doctor. John is the kind of Doctor who manages other Doctors.

John is the kind of person you want to impress.
John is tall. His eyes tend to squint. He laughs infrequently but smiles easily. When you arrive at John's home the first thing he shows you is his Arcade Machine, a cocktail cabinet with thousands of video games installed. John is in his 40s. He'll school you at Street Fighter 2, but he prefers the classics. Asteroids, Pac-Man. John has an almost childish passion for things.
John is a great guy. A good Doctor. A loving husband and a great Father. John is all these things and more.
But one tiny detail, not evident. Not immediately.
John believes the earth is flat.
John absolutely believes the world is flat.
This not a joke. This is not irony or an exercise in intellectual curiosity. John is not playing Devil's Advocate.
Again: John believes the world is flat.
If nothing else the sheer fucking arrogance of these people is breathtaking. Mental illness is a possibility.

To those who are surprised that humans have the capacity to abandon all rational thought and believe shit as crazy as a flat Earth: are you not surprised that most humans are religious too?

True but we can prove the earth is not flat versus not being able to prove a giant all knowing dude is watching us and being a total asshole.

But yea, I do agree with you, sadly.

Where do you draw the line in letting people believe stupid shit. And worse, spread hat shit to more people and create more insanity

If my son grew up and told me the earth was flat I'd say stfu. No way I'm gonna let him entertain just pure stupid. I feel like our ability to entertain stupid is the reason for a lot of the bullshit today

Seriously, it's so easy to prove whether the Earth is round or flat, there's basically no point in a conspiracy to make people believe it's one way or the other.

Because if you draw a triangle on a ball, the angles will be different than if you drew the triangle on a plane. So all you have to do is draw a super big triangle, measure the angles, and if they don't add up to 180*, then you're on a ball.

I empathize with flat earthers. It's the same persecution I receive for believing there are no numbers bigger than 10. Mathematicians have just been lying to us to keep us in check.

Yup

Actually it's # 0-9, 10 doesn't count either.

All other numbers are just a combo of 0-9

At first I was baffled by these guys, but at the point we're at now, if people are so dead set on being anti-science I'd rather them come up with wacky ideas about the planet that don't actually hurt anybody than say, claim vaccines cause autism or that climate change is fake/not gonna be noticeable

The Flat Earth movement is growing in Colorado, thanks to technology and skepticism about science

Jesus, that line triggered me. Also, God damnit Denver Post.

He is at the epicenter of a budding movement, one that's coming for your books, movies, God and mind. They're thousands strong — perhaps one in every 500 — and have proponents at the highest levels of science, sports, journalism and arts.

A few lines later:

(All scientists and educators consulted for this story rejected the idea of a flat earth.)

I can't imagine why these people are spreading this information other then the desire for everyone to see the truth.

He remembers the date — Feb. 10, 2015 — when he took the plunge and started creating Flat Earth content of his own. To his surprise, the daily videos he had begun churning out ignited a firestorm online. The 49-year-old now devotes himself to Flat Earth propagation full time. He has made 600 YouTube videos and been interviewed more than 120 times.

Oh, wait. Yeah this may as well be a half assed version of scientology.

Believing this requires rejecting reality and thinking the entire world is lying to you. It's not healthy and it's even worse that they are not only attracting other adults but teaching it to their children.

Might be difficult with the Earth's highly uneven terrain and the circumference of 24,900 miles makes for a one degree difference over 277 miles. Not so easy for the average person to measure.

On the other hand, you can just notice that a different set of stars are visible in the northern hemisphere vs the southern.

The leaps in logic these motherfuckers have to make is astounding.

By their logic, no plane to Japan, taking off from the US/Canadian Pacific coast should ever be flying West. Because it may fly off into space...

Bingo. And to Northern Hemisphere people, the constellations (and Moon) look upside down when viewed from the Southern Hemisphere.
