Gamers ep.2

Damn, this show actually has quite a bit of heart, which was surprising. I was expecting this to go in a different direction, but I actually enjoyed that episode! Tendou is thirsty af for the goofy MC though....

Restaurant to Another World episodes 1-3

Three episodes of watching people eat. Is this whole plot?
This is probably the worst show I've tried so far this season. Aimless...boring...almost incoherent....

Dive!! Episode 3

I'm still curious about where the plot is going. The MC is continuing to accidentally push away his friendships in order to train and I'm still wondering how it's going to affect the overall story of it. Also kind of weird that his girlfriend is still okay with how things were going in the last two episodes. They made it seem like his brother was going to steal her from him. I guess that could still happen but I expected more tension between the two. Good thing I'm more invested in how diving is affecting his life and relationships than the sport itself because it's pretty unexciting to watch.

And part of Yoichi's background was kind of unexpected. Seems like he isn't as dedicated to the sport as it was made to be believed. Also this show continues to feel nothing like Free! which is good cause at first I was expecting a ripoff.

School Rumble ep. 19-22
4 episodes left and they have yet to solve or started to solve any of the shipping issues brought up throughout the entire show. I mean, they even had Tenma address that same thing in the one of the episode intros, lol.

i should point out.
school rumble is not a romance show.
it's a comedy.

in other thoughts...

posting a bad dbz linkin park AMV

seems like one of the only right things to do right now.

RIP Chester :(

One thing about the Gamers OP is that it parodies older stuff you'd expect like Street Fighter II, Dragon Quest and Smash Bros but it also just has PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds in there which is only a few months old and PC only. Is that game actually popular in Japan? I could see it having appeal to the military/gun otaku crowd.

I watched some anime. Who'da thunk?

Little Witch Academia 2-6

The Netflix release is perfect for my current viewing habits; I can watch this dubbed while I wander around doing other things because it doesn't really require much attention. They missed a trick by not giving the British characters British accents, particularly as the whole show is set in Britain...

While it's nice to watch something that has basically nothing objectionable about it at all (a rarity in modern anime!), I'd also be hard-pressed to say it's very exciting, either; while, as with the OVAs, it's clearly aiming for the Harry Potter milieu, it doesn't really hit the same sweet spot. Akko is far less irritating in English than in Japanese, but it doesn't alter the fact that, as always for shows of this ilk, she's going to spend huge amounts of time being completely useless at everything because that's apparently how character development works for anime. Diana essentially steals focus every time she appears on screen and actually has dimensions of characterisation.

Some lovely effects animation, though.

Anyway, the real reason to post about this is to correct bad Latin in episode 6.

The sign above says something like "Oh sleeping one
although "sleeping" is spelt wrong
of Arka, do not wake (something) up. If you approach the fountain, you will attack, oh Arka of the Polaris guard!". It's basically nonsense - poor vocab choices and silly grammar mistakes. I'd probably say something like "nolite Arkam dormientem excitare; si fonti appropinquabitis, Arka, custos Polaris, vos oppugnabit."

Consider yourselves educated!

More interestingly:

Magical Circle 1-2

I... might like this? And it's a comedy? While it shares some of the usual slightly odd stuff that puts me off most Japanese comedy anime, it has a decent sense of comic timing and jokes that don't just rely on tired manzai tropes. The mayor's creepy dance reached Sideshow Bob rake levels of amusement.

It has plenty of visual flair and some appealing performances, so who knows?

Made in Abyss 1

Distasteful manga yadda yadda yadda, but this was a marvellous first episode in most every way; while it skews a little younger than I'd prefer these days in terms of visual design, this is the kind of intriguing exploratory adventure story I love - and it helps that it's so beautifully rendered.

New Game!! Episode 2:

Well, I suppose a bit of kudos is in order for the series for injecting something resembling interesting conflict into the mix that is actually relevant to the job and the teams and people. Also not getting the complaint about the drama for the most part since this is a workplace after all not a club or a farm.

I was wrong...... so very wrong. We hadn't hit peak isekai until now

Isekai Onsen ni Tensei shita Ore no Kounou ga Tondemosugiru

High school student Atami Kusatsu on his way to a rural onsen, meets with a tragic accident along the way and dies, but he's reincarnated as an onsen in a fantasy universe.

In this world, the liquefied Atami turns out to have remarkable physical and magical healing properties, and he soon finds himself being regularly visited by beautiful elven adventurer Laticia, large-breasted priestess Kumu, and petite village chieftess Chichiku.

Haibane Renmei, Laughing Under the Clouds, Eureka Seven AO, Gai-Rei-Zero, Code Geass, and Slayers Revolution are all coming to Crunchyroll today.

Gamers! 01

I was hesitant to give this a try because the show being called Gamers makes me want to throw up. Other then the novelty of "Wow that is literally just Guilty Gear XRD on the screen" its not super great.

Seems like they can just use ArcSys game assets but have to dance around other things when Hi-Score Girl doesn't give a fuck. But then you have Gintama which always dances around everything? These copyright laws make literally zero sense.

I think ArcSys is a sponsor for Gamer? That's why. As for Hi-Score Girl the author struggled with copyright claims at one point and this was the cause of that one long hiatus.

Gintama tiptoes around everything and thus never gets in hot water.

I didn't see that second season earlier! That changes the story dynamics and pacing a little, lol.

1. Ooh, been meaning to check this out sometime.

2. NO MORE EXCUSES PEOPLE. REV UP YOUR JIBUN WOOS AND WATCH IT.

Indeed. Need more CG reactions in here

Welcome to the Ballroom Ep. 2

Seems a bit early for outsourcing, doesn't it? Episode was a pretty mixed bag. The Hyodo house visit scene was just as good as I wanted it to be. Other parts were disappointing. The actual dance scenes continue to be mesmerizing.

Eureka Seven: AO 20-24
Renton's arrival can be chalked up to: "Have you heard the good word about anthropic principle?" Avoiding sacrifices through time travel is a common troupe that is usually flipped on its head. However, AO indulges in it by sacrificing the entire existence of Secrets and of scub corals to afford the dimension-hopping Eureka a way back home. Ignoring that Ao's board at the very end emits trapar waves—meaning scub corals still exist—concludes that nothing of value was lost or gained besides time, which the quartz can make all better again. Well, Ao's history was erased but at least he met his parents—a trade that some people might be willing to make. The moral is: The environment > aliens. Ao's eyes are special because of his Reading Steiner, right? It is not a convenient excuse to avoid bogging the show down with crummy flight training or with any training for that matter because you just have to charge head-on against anything in this universe while firing your laser. Interesting ending... Ao seems to have got what he wanted and based Truth stays winning seeking. By the way, anma means mother.

All there's left to say is that this is what is to be expected from a modern mecha series (post-Eva). It's difficult to discern what a change in writers would do between two iterations exactly, but getting a new writer that wasn't previously involved in the original work was likely an ill-advised move. If the producers were serious about creating another big success then they should have used the same ingredients instead, or of equal quality at least. The internet tells me that the original writer for Eureka Seven regularly works on high-profile shows, so either the story was already complete to him or the substitute was due to "adult circumstances." Also, the core element of romance was absent, despite its major focus in the prequel. Ao himself was clueless anyway.
