Yep, while Deen as a whole has been somewhat hit and miss; as of late they've been on a roll with the general quality of their products.

The 2000s were a rough time for DEEN, no question, but since about 2012 with Hatakeyama's directorial debut on Sankarea the studio has been building a better network of talent they can draw from, which has been able to pay off in a number, if not all, of their more recent productions.

This show is a fucking rollercoaster. It has no sense of pacing, it's just one event one after another without any build-up whatsoever. An exorcism! Nazi! Mummies! Deformed babies! It's fucking bananas.

Also this I guess.

Made in Abyss - 03

Pretty slow start but at least the journey starts now. The most notable aspect of this episode was the music which seems to have some nice tracks to offer.

I found myself wondering if I wouldn't enjoy older protagonists more. 12-year-old kids gathering information, strategizing and having an emotional goodbye seems a bit odd. Not unbelievable, especially if they mature early in their harsh environment, but still. Well, at least our protagonist is childish enough to regard this as anything but the suicide mission it is (or, well, should be). But I suppose their young age might have plot relevance...or maybe it's just to enable the pedo-crap of which there was thankfully none this episode.

Jarmel and I mentioned it last episode but it's kinda hilarious how hostile the entire architecture of that city is. The place is a god damned death trap. The kids actually had to jump over a sizable gap on their way. Though I guess it was part of an already decaying area.

Almost hurts my suspension of disbelief because I really got to wonder how a society built upon exploring that extremely dangerous abyss doesn't give the slightest damn about safety but I'm just nitpicking. I guess this omnipresent environmental danger makes the setting more appealing to some.

Plot-wise there was some rather overt mention of an ominous death cause for children...

Surely that'll be relevant. Seems like there've been quite a lot of mystery related information already. I wonder if I should try to look at all the hints in this show in detail and see if part of the mystery can already be puzzled together. Usually, I don't do that but might be exciting for a change.

Gundam 0079

Solid and original series overall. Though between episodes 31-39 it became a little boring. Anyway, this is the first and last time I bother with the Gundam franchise.

Series had a little of that 70s craziness that is missing in the other series.

Also tried watching Garden of Sinners but this pacing and animation is not for me. Having watched Tsukihime few years ago, this seems even worse. I can guess why it is rated so high though.
If it cant surpass Boogiepop Phantom, it is not worth watching.
Watch Mobile Fighter G Gundam.

Watch Mobile Fighter G Gundam.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I watched it mainly for historical reference, just like I did with Orguss, Macross, Southern Cross, Mospeada and Yamato.

Or else I'd have watched Macross Frontier and the Yamato remakes too. Enough of mecha and spaceship battles. My brain will explode!

Dunkirko

Shame Nolan steps so far out of his comfort zone to still fall into the same trappings. I swear the majority of the dialogue in the movie isn't speaking to other characters, its speaking to the audience. Hard to speak to characters when there aren't any though! Dunkirk is by no means a bad movie - not even close really - but its also a really weird movie. The cinematography and direction in general is superb (and even the score by Zimmer actually adds a lot to the movie) but the way scenes transition is like a TV show where it will hop back and forth and back and forth to keep kneecapping its own tension. Weirdly enough I think the intertwining stories work fine - I just don't know if it really adds a lot. The movie is also more of an experience"like Gravity where its "Watch this shit go down! It looks really pretty and sounds really good and the scale alone is impressive enough to recommend but I guess I expected more? The first 20 or so minutes are fantastic though. Its a movie with a lot of good moments, but not not a good solid core.

Also I still can't hear what the fuck people are saying most of the time. Nolan plz.

I don't think I've seen a Nolan film since The Dark Knight Rises, but that sounds a bit like the biggest problem I had with that film - that the editing felt really awkward and unusually janky.

Nolan's sound mixing really is the worst. Inception, The Dark Knight Rises and especially Interstellar all had issues with barely understandable dialogue here and there.

Its just the dialogue here. Like the sound design and score are great but I can't hear any of these guys and not just because they are 1940s british people

Princess Principal 1-2

So you really can never judge a book (or anime) by its cover. This is actually good.
Yes, it features moe cute girls doing cute girly spy things. Which is silly. And at the same time it also uses the school setting, which is ridiculous. It's so anime. Oh yeah and one of them it's a Japanese with a katana which jumps and cut an enemy car in a chase scene in the first episode. Strong echoes of <I've cut another worthless object>

However, it's really a well produced anime with strong visuals, well directed, good action scenes, cool premise for the setting (a cold war between a divided fantasy British Empire diesekpunk), and better spy shaeningags than Joker game.

The setting is perfectly nailed, imo it's comparable to Made in Abyss in that regard

Imagine how much better this season would be if cute girls were never invented.

Red Garden 22 END

The ending, despite having the most (attempts at) action of any episode, felt a bit anticlimactic. But then the particulars of the larger storyline of the books of curses were never terribly interesting; it's how the main characters attempted to come to terms with their difficult situation and the relationship drama they went through that was the interesting part. I appreciated how grounded the characters stayed even as the fantasy elements escalated as the story moved to its conclusion.

It's too bad that, even though the voice actors worked so hard to sell the sensitivity and depth of their drama, the animation was so thoroughly poor. There was very little of anything that could be called character acting in the animation, and what little there was was very imperfect. Thus there was a real disconnect between what the script was trying to convey and what the visuals on screen were able to convey. The show still worked, just barely, but it could have been so much more if it had had a more competent production. Gonzo strikes again.

If people really want to make an anime into a US live-action TV show, Red Garden would be a much better option than One Piece. Red Garden is already set in the US, its fantasy elements are minor enough to not require overly elaborate special effects, and the premise would certainly fit on a channel like the CW. A live-action show would even have a good chance of being stronger than the original as long as it got good actors, since the poor animation is the biggest thing holding this anime back. But of course, Red Garden isn't a known property at all, so there's no money in it to motivate anyone to try to make a new version of it. Ah well.

It is interesting to see how the elements of this show foreshadow the later shows that Mari Okada, who was assistant writer here, would go on to spearhead the writing of. Its focus on digging into the emotional suffering of its female leads is similar to a lot of what Okada has become known for.

Imagine how much better this season would be if cute girls were never invented.

I don't want to imagine that dreadful world.

G Gundam is a sports battle anime! Also the Yamato 2199 remake is 100% worth watching!

That would mean no new Symphogear. I'll have MPR escort you to the nearest exit.

Symphogear without cute girls. Just sentient suits of combat armor that broadcast music. Imagine it.

Eccentric Family Episode 3

Man I have to say while Benten seems amazing she's such a smug asshole. She goes around threatening these Tanuki's like its a joke. It doesn't help the master gives her everything even though she ignores him. I was also questioning on how she can scare Tanuki's when they can transform into anything. Then this episode showed why.

I wanna see more of this Tanuki that's supposed to be Yasiburo's lover. Also mom Tanuki is still amazing.

I was about ready to call it a bust but I was pleasantly surprised by this episode in the end. The episode actually surprised me with some of the interactions it displayed and how it presented them and I'm somewhat interested in seeing how the relationships between all these characters (some of which have clearly defined and distinct personalities now) progresses, which is something I could not have said about the first episode.

Keep in mind I'm not saying the show is good, per se, as the "school's idol who falls in love with the nerdy kid who just likes videogames so gosh darned much" is a pretty lame trope by any standard and by far the weakest element on display but I'm interested enough for now to keep watching.

Also,

At it's core this show has a lot of heart and is very cute. On the outside the show is kibda boring though. The art is pretty nice and it seams they are putting money into the production, so you get some nice looking shots. I'll stick with this one.

Made in Abyss 3

I don't think this tutorial prologue deserved 3 episodes. Unless this is going to be a long series (who could sustain these production values for any length?) or short and incomplete (bummer if so), we're 3 episodes in and the main quest line JUST started. What is this, modern FF?

Been watching Monster, since it seems to be randomly recommended in most threads I go to.

It's very slowly paced and it likes to often focus on characters outside the protagonist for several episodes in a row, but I'm enjoying it, if anything due to how different it is from the usual anime shows I've watched in recent years. I'm on episode 40 so I might as well go all the way.

Monster is essentially what you'd get if HBO made an anime. Its pace and presentation is extremely aching to a western drama.

Which hurts all the more since Guillermo del Toro was making a live action Monster for HBO, and that went down the shitter. Can't even recall if another studio picked it up.

Never knew you too were a member of the church of DTL.

Decided to go on the trek of watching -every- single show that aired this year. Started in alphabetical order from the Winter.

ACCA-13 was a great show that went in directions I didn't expect. Reminded me a lot of Perfect Insider more than anything, the story isn't as complex as you'd think it would be but it still manages to surprise you and is about its cast more than anything. Extremely easy to marathon too with the pace being hectic, incredibly good looking and stylish and maybe my favorite OP in years.

Followed it up with Akiba's Trip, BanG Girls (there were no girls banging in this, someone should have sued them for false advertising) and Chain Chronicle and now I hate myself for coming up with this stupid idea because these shows are terrible. But I'll follow through on it. Need something on my TV while I'm playing FFXIV

WHat!? Chain Chronicles is in my top 5 of the year, the Tale of Aram and Yuri is unforgettable.

BeyBlade GRevolution Episode 5 (EngDub)

Ive missed Tyson so much and his random lines cause his head got big never get old (good thing Kai keeps trying to keep him grounded and real). Great match with Dragoon v the copycat one.

Vatican 3

Who the fuck wrote this? Looks like someone who had little attention span so he/she jumps from one idea to the other in minutes. Solve one mystery and do one 'supernatural' event a time, don't fucking keep stacking them.

Ah, they're headed on a near pointless suicide mission. How... admirable? Brave? Or stupid. Mostly stupid. Things actually happen next time.

God damn it, why couldn't more chessmaster protagonists be like Lelouch? Instead of being a generic edgy Gary Stu who gets to have everything go his way until the very end, he's constantly being set back by events not even he could anticipate, even if the general outcome is always favorable to him and his allies. All these small failures are also helping reinforce his character as he is forced to react to the consequences of his actions (unlike, say, Death Note's Light), and also adds tension to most of his plans (except for his apparent inhability to account for the white prototype).

I also like the dynamic between Lelouch and his friend's approach to changing the world, and how the show still hasn't taken a clear-cut stance on who's right. On one hand, his friend's full of platitudes and hope that he can reform a corrupt government that was built upon the foundations of racism and colonialism, while Lelouch is on the opposite end of the spectrum with how he thinks the ends justify the means, and the collateral damage from his plans is slowly catching up to him. They're two radical extremes in the way one'd go about to change a status quo that s/he believes is wrong, but even then it's interesting to see their philosophies clash and the way their actions rub off onto the people that surround them.

Was kind of expecting Wakamoto and Lelouch to start playing N-dimensional chess soon after the former was introduced as the series' main antagonist, so I'm really glad to see that it still hasn't been the case, and that Lelouch isn't hogging agency away from the rest of the cast like most chessmaster MCs do... at worst, he's indirectly forcing the rest of the cast to change and grow due to the repercussions of his own actions, and others actually get a chance to help or save him every now and then.

Eccentric Family Episode 4

I really hate Benten's smug attitude Lol. Like why would anyone like her especially since she turned the father into stew. I know I would never forgive her. Anyway it was nice seeing Yasuburo blow those twins away. The old master is still being a stubborn and not letting Benten go. Also the older brother needs to calm down.

Seeing as how strong the Father Tanuki was I wonder how the heck he was turned into stew? Also rip Yasuburo. I can't help but laugh how the ears are shaped in this anime. Still this episode was lovely and vibrant.
