CEO of Niantic booed onstage at Pokemon Go Fest. App unplayable, many still in line

Lashley

Why does he wear the mask!?
I'm sure they've had words. The words were probably something like "So you're telling us that over a year after release the game is still pulling in numbers so high that cellular networks and the game servers are getting overwhelmed? We're going to have to get a new money bin."

Oh, they're making bank, but companies are always thinking of the extra money they could be making

Which in this case, is probably tens of millions

Wow major fuck up if true. Hopefully all people there are refunded then.

From polygon-

Right now, individual tickets are going for nearly $300 from many sellers. One ticket’s even on eBay with an $800 price tag (or best offer, which will likely be much lower). There are also pairs of tickets going for somewhere between $200 and $1,250; the maximum number sellers appear to have in stock is four Pokémon Go Fest passes at once.

I'd be pissed.

Wow that sucks.

But the scale issues those guys have to deal with are unfathomable. Like I wouldn't be surprised if they could take down the whole local cell network unknowingly.

It would be a really good case for mesh networking.

Can somebody explain what is the whole situation here? I thought Nintendo owned Pokémon. So why is this still happening?

Yeah honestly people should just do/enjoy whatever they like to do, you only live once after all. (not anything law breaking ofc tho)

Edit: and without bashing/trolling/insulting each other to death even if they like things other won't like or is cringeworthy to them etc. So kinda havin respect for people no matter their interests.

Not all activities get equal societal approval or status. It would be nice if the mcdonalds employee got the same respect as the doctor when asked "what do you do" or the pokemon go player the same as the mountain climber when asked "what are you hobbies", but that's just not how things are.

Honestly, after their handling with Pokemon Go, Niantic has to be the most incompetent corporation ever.

-Why do you need a high-end device to even run the thing properly? Even then Why the hell is it so laggy?
-Why the fuck do they tie animations to network calls? If the spots are on your current map they should already be cached on your device or they should asynchronously load in the images and text when you interact with a stop/gym and just pop-in once they arrive.
-Why does the fact that I lose one bar of signal mean that all of a sudden I can't view the menu? That shit should be cached and local with the only network calls being if you are actually interacting with your items/pokemon by way of using/dropping an item or transferring/evolving/powering/appraising your pokemon
-How is the game still this broken?

And the big one, why is the game still so so seemingly feature incomplete? They released it early with a fuck-ton of server problems which lasted several months, had a borderline playable amount of content and as a result they burned through their good will and fan base like a burning house in the middle of a field. They then spent all of their time going after things that weren't even a problem (Third party maps) who only popped up because they removed features (Tracker) and made their app perform worse as a result.

So I see Pokemon Go is continuing to be one of the most financially successful disasters I've ever seen.

Nintendo doesn't own Pokemon, ownership is split 34/33/33 between Game Freak, Creatures Inc., and Nintendo respectively. Those 3 companies all hold a similar stake in The Pokemon Company, which generally manages the brand (including spinoffs like Pokemon Go).

As for why the game isn't fully dead yet, see the comment above about it being a very financially successful disaster.

Atleast they are havin fun unlike those negative morons from those tweets. It's ridiculous some people think people have to forever behave serious 24/7 after they hit adulthood.

Kinda why i like some of the japanese/asian like cultures cuz that stigma is not there and they just embrace it:p

It's the fact people are playing games in public that rile up the Charlie averages. This is why people are fine gaming on smart phones (what he's doing with it? Ambiguous!) but dedicated gaming handhelds? No. That's "wot my 6 year old son loves" and suddenly you might have some form of autism, or what have you.
Hence DS was the hottest shit because the iPhone app store hadn't ascended into godhood yet.

Feels like we need to bring that pic in every Pokémon GO thread since people are so keen in their "the game's dead" bubble.

But yes, the Chicago event is a disaster. I've read that the allowed space is 0.5sq for hundreds, maybe thousands of people.

I think you need help with reading comprehension.

God, these kinds of people make my blood boil

I know from these tweets that these blokes are in Chester for Saturday daytime drinking. This tells me all I need to know. If you're not a Brit or don't happen to be au fait with Chester and the creatures it attracts, feel free to overlay your particular flavour of dickhead onto the subjects and said tweets will redress themselves to you.

My mind hurts from how they screwed up so hard and yet there stil making but there still not fixing it. Why was the first pokemon game on phone given to such inexperienced dev

I play it, but it still needs a lot of attention. I am not a die hard at all, but I would figure Nintendo would step in and make it better. Guess I am wrong.

A Pokemon Go Fest

Humanity deserves to die.

Stop liking what I don't like is what I get from this...

I don't think I've seen a single person playing this game in months compared to when it first came out. Perhaps that is when threw off the organizers? They didn't expect so many people.

The thing I don't get is why Pokemon trading and fighting were not a thing. They could have copied a light version of the formula from the handheld games and it would have been better than what we got.

Yep. I remember when this came out and attempting gym battles. The whole thing was an incomprehensible mess. No instructions or guidance at all. I've played plenty of Pokemon games and I was totally baffled about how the battle system worked. I think I just dropped the game around then.

Seriously, FUCK people who like video games.

They sold out 30,000 tickets for this event in literal seconds.

There was no reason to be surprised.

Yep. I was ready to buy a ticket a few mins after it went on sale. It was sold out so yeah, this game is still immensely popular.

LOL at Niantic

and yikes this thread.

Did they not have a Free WiFi setup? That sounds like an epic oversight fail. Of course cell reception was going to die instantly with all those people

No better way to celebrate the first anniversary than to bring back the problems of one year ago.

Solid 9/10 first post

Terrible idea for a festival; it's not their servers that are the problem* I'm guessing, it's the phone signal interference. That many people gathered in one spot trying to get on mobile data is a clusterfuck waiting to happen. Don't expect to be playing a game that requires a chunk of data in that environment.

*it's probably also the servers

It would probably be more noticeable WW if it were servers. It's lack of cell towers for major carriers and no wifi hotspots that's making it difficult for people to log on

Black Phillip is attending Pokemon Go Fest. No wonder the event is doomed. That loathsome trickster speaks with a forked tongue and seeks to corrupt our maidens.

Sony or MS probably bought his admission ticket and footed the bill for the plane trip.

Lol nah but really it sucks that it's going down like that. You'd think they'd know based on ticket sales alone what they'd need to get prepared for the game to run smoothly at the event. For the people that traveled there from a big distance I can imagine how angry and dissapointed they may be. I'd start issuing refunds if they don't get it properly working.
And fuck those assholes making fun of them, I would not spend money on an event like that but I have no bias against you doing it. If that's what you like to do then right on and more power to you. I hope it gets fixed and people get to have fun.

Kinda feel bad for Niantic. I have no interest in the game anymore, but it clearly blew up to a far bigger degree than they were capable of handling. TPC should've brought on an additional partner to help them out.

They're still awful a year later, lol. Selling tickets to a fail.

Haven't played this in forever but it's still popular somehow.

Beyond shocked at Niantic's incompetence a year later. Even something as simple as password retrieval for the game is mindboggingly complicated.

Feel bad for the attendees, however.

People forced into teaming up against other teams creates a pretty awesome social aspect. It's why i've been playing and now onto lvl 38. It's also I'm a bit of a grind head thanks to older MMO games lol
