Not really

One, it's be in RPG. Two, it's the next big game from the dev of The Witcher 3, so doesn't matter what it is, tons of people are going to be interested (ie Naughty Dog going from Uncharted to Last of Us). Three, games is a medium where cyberpunk has had more notable, more plentiful, and more recent works than film. Snatcher, the original Blade Runner adventure game, Deus Ex, Syndicate, various indie games like Satellite Reign, Va11Halla, Gemini Rue, Technobabylon, Quadrilateral Cowboy, Ruiner, Observer, and so on.

I dont think Cyberpunk 2077 and Blade Runner 2049 are anything alike outside of their genre.

CD Projeckt Red is a household name that has just delivered a fantastic game that did well commercially and critically in the Witcher 3. While Blade Runner 2049 is a sequel of a film that did not do well commercially and is a cult classic that only the hard core fans enjoyed.

While I think Blade Runner 2049 is just a 'good' movie, not amazing as a lot of people think it is. I can fully understand why someone love it. But I fail to see why the reception of Cyberpunk 2077 would be affected by Blade Runner 2049.

I hope you two are right. Witcher 3 is my GOAT game at the moment and I'll def buy Cyberpunk 2077 due to their past work. I hope the gaming audience really jumps on it so we get even more cyberpunk games. I'm getting a little burned out on fantasy the last few years.

It would have told them that it's a hard sci-fi, cerebral, cyberpunk noir that's also a slow burn like in the reviews themselves.

you're saying that you think an audience smart enough to read the reviews wouldn't go see the movie? Instead, so even the dumb people who at a glance at the 80+ score decides to read the reviews and look deeper and then decide that 2049 is not for them?

right

right

They're either stupid for writing off a cerebral film by reading reviews telling them it's a slow burn like... all of Villeneuve's work or they're stupid for looking at a number then coming out pissy.

You should watch the original, if only to understand how dumb remaking it sounds.

This is true too.

It's an unnecessary, inelegantly-named sequel to a geek cult movie which itself was never a commercial hit. It doesn't even look all that impressive next to the original. In fact I'm not even sure how they managed to make such an expensive film look so devoid of texture and contrast.

Strong word of mouth might give the movie a spike, but this limp debut doesn't surprise me.

You gotta explain yourself.

First of all, we should be thankful it was made. I still have not seen it but I cant wait.

As to its performance, it might get good word of the mouth and last longer than usual... plus internationally it seems to be doing much better... nevertheless, we should not care anyway, we are not the investors.

Oh I agree completely. It’s a great film, one I think will continue to find new fans, just as the first one did.

I’m merely suggesting that blockbuster expectations might not have been reasonable, because that isn’t what this movie is up to.

It’s my favorite movie so far this year.

Wow Mainstream Audiences are not ready (or don't care) for Cyberpunk I guess (apart from The Matrix that did gangbusters at the box office)

Dredd
Ghost In The Shell Live action
Blade Runner 2049

TV
Almost Human

Games
Deus Ex Mankind Divided
Mirrors Edge 2

Off the top of my head.

I don't think now the Cyberpunk 2077 game will do as well as I originally thought, somehow I thought Bladerunner 2 would do quite well, what with fans othere from the beginning, nostalgia fans of 80's films, fans the original picked up on home media, fans of ryan gosling, fans of jared leto and batista and Harrison Ford in a nother sci-fi movie and of course youngsters who are into sci-fi stuff but are new to the series, and people curious in general because they have heard about it, denis villneuve fans and finally cyberpunk fans.

It’s really sad because it’s such an amazing genre, but it historically has never clicked with broader audiences. If Cyberpunk 2077 does TW3 numbers it’ll be the first outright success for full blown Cyberpunk across films and games, aside from The Matrix

15?!

This is legit shocking to me.

Maybe it was 10-12. The thing to take away from this is that not many people are giving it a chance and among those who are, the slower pacing is putting some people off. Those people will then tell their friends to skip it.

And of course, the audience in my city is shit. So if anyone was hoping for International to save this movie, think again.

Shadowrun returns, shadowrun dragon fall and shadowrun Hong Kong were all successes.

I caved and saw this with my family. Honestly the best movie I've seen since LOTR. Just incredible. I need this on Blu-Ray now.

Why? I feel the same way, if I did see it I certainly don’t remember it.

So there's a famous film that gets a sequel. You haven't seen this film, therefore you think the sequel shouldn't exist and instead they should remake that famous movie, because apparently you refuse to watch any movie if it's not brand new, and others should be deprived of the sequel to the beloved film because of this.

Not everyone is you.

I don’t know a single person who doesn’t remember seeing BR. Even the ones that dislike it remember and respect it.

There’s a reason its as renowned as it is, it influenced nearly every single sci fi film released after it.

If there's one thing movies should be, it's necessary! Good art doesn't justify its own existence for some reason.

Also Blade Runner 2049 is such a cumbersome name, with a whole three more numbers to put a descriptive twist on the generic title Blade Runner 2.

If you have seen it and didn't like it or remember it, than why care either way? It's not your type of movie and you wouldn't see the sequel or remake anyway.

And if you didn't see the original, you could, you know watch it right now...

BTW, is there really that much CGI? I was hoping to see this thing but I strongly dislike computer animation.

You know that every big-budget movie you've seen for at least the last 5 years probably has a tonne of CG regardless of the genre. The best CG is CG that you don't notice. Despite the obvious fact that the movie clearly wasn't 'filmed on location', you can't 'tell' that anything in particular is CG.

Well, they certainly didn't spend any money on the poster. What a teal-and-orange disaster that thing is.

For a big budget film, there is very little CG. It's used just for the stuff that can't be done practically. Most of the film is done with sets and miniatures. The CG that's there is invisible.

I remembered seeing it vividly but upon rewatching it yesterday I'm pretty sure I just tuned into it near the end as I had no recollection of anything else happening in the movie but the fights at the end.
Why? I feel the same way, if I did see it I certainly don't remember it so no point watching the sequel.
it's more a continuation than a direct sequel. You're not missing much context by not having watched the original.

I've never seen the original so I have no interest in a direct sequel. Should have been a remake/reboot.

Urgh, this is a terrible attitude. You are the reason the Cronenberg Fly sequel didn't get greenlit, and instead we will no doubt wind up with some watered down CGI fest reboot that doesn't compare. You know, like Robocop, Total Recall etc.

"It should have been shorter", "it should have had more action".. come on guys... compromising the vision of the film makers to chase money is an awful idea. I think talking about the budget being unrealistic or criticising the marketing is fine, but the film is super critically acclaimed and will go down as a classic.

No, I’m saying I wouldn’t see a point in watching a sequel when I have not seen the first movie.

That’d apply to a lot of people hence the low numbers.

Except that guy then claimed they should have just remade the film instead of a continuation, which was just asinine.

TAJ

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
Villeneuve claims he can count the number of instances he used green screen on one hand.

That's pretty much a meaningless statement. Rotoscoping is a thing.

I don’t know enough about the movie to make that call, I’d imagine it’s not as big as the Star Wars/Star Trek stuff.

The film was Blade Runner, and it delivered on that promise. Thankfully, it did not try to be something other than what it was.

You either die a Villeneuve, or live long enough to see yourself become a Nolan.

I love both directors. I hate that it always has to be one over the other.

And honestly this has been a really good year for films. BR2049, Wind River, and Dunkirk are all classics in my book.

Yup, that's why they should remake Lawrence of Arabia. Who needs that old piece of shit when Brett Ratner can remake that for half the budget. You don't even need a good cinematographer on it, just have the DP from The Avengers. It should look lovely!

Wow that's crazy, it's geeting good reviews and i thought the hype would do it justice? what other heavy hitter is on the market now?

I’m really surprised. It’s been booked out at a number of showings since it’s opened where I’m located and combined with the high praise and what I thought would be positive word of mouth I assumed it was going to be a big opening weekend. Hopefully the viewing numbers rise over time based on reception but that’s quite a disappointing box office performance.
