Kingdoms of Amalur demo impressions thread [Up On 360/Origin/Steam/U.S. PSN]

When was the last time a thread for a demo for a game in a completely new franchise from a lesser known developer got over 60 pages on Neogaf? :)

Hype machine on overload and I am fully on board :D

Really wish the legislative session wasn't going on...i'm gonna have next to no time to enjoy this game until after March 15 :(

Is it sick to be so hyped for the game that you actually get excited for the OT for that game? Because Im totally excited for the OT to hit.

Still going back and forth on what build I want to go with, definitely will be using the bow a lot.

This is the first time I've been so hyped in months or even years. I usually avoid information about games etc. to avoid this. Having to wait 3 days longer than US gamers is going to be hard :(. Perhaps I might try a VPN activation + steam offline mode trick again like with Deus EX.

For you guys all planning on hybrid builds, what are you going to do about all the weapon choices? I was thinking of going pure mage, meaning I would be getting talents in 3 different weapon styles by picking all magic, but maybe I would drop sceptres all together. However, if I delve into the finesse tree, it's going to require me to take one of the weapon skills in that tree, but I already have two from the sorcery line. I don't really want to be switching between three weapon types all game.

overall it's pretty easy for me because my two main choices for my build are either Might/Sorcery, or Might Finesse. I love the Great swords, so that will end up being my main might weapon. Secondary will depend on which other path I take, If I go with Sorcery i'll likely pick up Chakrums because I had alot of fun with those, and their awesome. If I go finesse i'll probably take bows, because they are a great utility weapon, and once you start opening up abilities for the bow they seem like they could be a solid AOE weapon.

Also so you know I'm pretty sure that if you go hybrid you can still just pick your weapons from one tree if you really wanted to. I "think" you could probably move up the tree by just pumping points into your abilities in the tree that you don't take a weapon from.

Yeah I'm leaning for 2 handed sword and bow for my first character.

Anyone know if there are crossbows in this game too?

I'm planning a Finesse\Sorcery build focusing on daggers, stealth (man, I love the backstabbing\shanking animation), and probably scepters for range instead of bows.

Don't know if I'll be adding in a third weapon. Are the chakrams(sp?) slow AOE style weapons like the hammer is for Might?

I'll likely be going for a full-on Paladin build, so Might/Sorcery. I was elated when I saw that Sorcery had a healing ability after about 20 or so points. My Pally from WoW shall live on...

I think the IGN preview says no crossbows.

I'm going for 2 handed as well, but instead of bows I think I'll go for a little magic.

Gamescom last year is still my favorite http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8w8X6YQ21x4

CITIZENS OF EARTH!!!

Awww. No big deal I suppose.

I don't know if they plan on implementing more weapon types, but lots of people are requesting them for DLC. quite a few mentions for Crossbows, so you might get them at somepoint.

I'd really like some gauntlet style weapons. Sort of similar to the Cestus Gauntlets in GOWIII, they felt so great to use in that, i'd love something similar for this.

I've been tinkering around with a Shadowcaster build myself. I find that trying to get the best of both worlds is a bit impractical, so I decided to specialize to the bow and build a skill set around there:

Bow:
- Longbow Mastery + Drawpower for power.
- Barbed Arrow for heavy bleed damage, Envenomed Edge for poison effect.
- Enduring Agony to prolong those effects.
- Arrow Storm and Scattershot for multiple arrows/AoE, thus increasing the chance for those status effects to kick in.
- Smolder, Chain Lightning, Frostshackle in case I have an elemental weapon.

Decoy:
- Max out Summon Faer Gorta branch.
- Smoke Bomb.

Close combat:
- Faeblade or Daggers (depending on which I like better) for close range individual enemies.
- Staff for close range crowd control (love that charge ability as a 'get off me' move). Chakrams look awesome, but they're redundant with the bow.

Attack Magic:
- Mark of Flame, Storm Bolt, Ice Barrage. I'll forgo the higher level spells and focus on the individual, easier to spam magic to expose elemental vulnerabilities.

Buffs:
- Skillful Defense and Hardy Constitution to survive more hits if needed.
- Conservative Casting to reduce mana expenditure.

...My build came out to 57 finesse, 55 sorcery, 11 might. That should buy me the Shadowcaster destiny, which is especially nice for that mana regen and critical hit to mana point perk. And of course that poison blink is just awesome.

Having said all that, I think it's more practical just to go for top level finesse destiny though, but I just like the idea of hybrid classes.

I can already see several problems with your build. First of all, you can only use two weapons at once so getting both Staff and Faeblade/Dagger would be sort of a waste. However, this is probably mitigated by the fact that you would probably need the points in those skills to reach the higher tier skills anyway.

Second of all, if you're planning to play with the controller, that allows for only four active skills at once and you already have five actives. You could always switch them around for variety, I guess, though it'd be nice to have all accessible at once. Or you could just play with the kb/m if you're on the PC.

Already, I see some flaws with the abilities trees as it is. There are just too many active skills and the points pre-requisites for the higher-tier skills and destinies would need you to add points in quite a few active skills and you won't be able to access them all at once in the game.

I am so hyped for the game. Thank god the damn demo didn't come out two months earlier or something. The wait would have been unbearable!

Yeah, a lot of it is mixing-and-matching to the situation. I build around the bow, so I'll have that as my primary weapon. Depending on the melee situation (single vs crowd), I'll either have the daggers/faeblade or staff as the other weapon set before hand.

I actually don't think I have that many active skills. The offensive magics are the only spammables in there, and they're situational depending on the enemy vulnerability, so I probably won't need to have more than one or two in the rotation at the same time. The summon isn't something I'd be spamming anyway...more like a once per battle sort of thing.

I played the demo for like 5 minutes then quit because I already made up mind that I want it (5 mins after skipping the cut scenes) - why take spoilers if you already can tell you want to buy the game? Unless the demo has unique content...seems to be better to save your time for the real thing

I was kind of worried you unlock things after completing the demo instead of just at the beginning, hopefully that's not the case...I seem to remember that's what they did for Dragon Age II demo

There is a Mass Effect weapon unlock at the end of the demo, so if you want that you'll have to finish it. It is time based, so you could finish the tutorial section, wait until you get the "you have 45 minutes from here on" and leave it running for that time.

I just noticed that you listed Enduring Agony in your build and that's a Shadow Flare effect. So you effectively have six actives in that build.

I just came up with this build after doing some reading around the web:

Finesse
Precise Weaponry I: (Rank: 2 / 3)
Dagger Mastery: (Rank: 6 / 6)
Longbow Mastery: (Rank: 6 / 6)
Assassin's Art: (Rank: 6 / 6)
Precise Weaponry II: (Rank: 2 / 3)
Faeblade Mastery: (Rank: 6 / 6)
Drawpower: (Rank: 5 / 5)
Envenomed Edge : (Rank: 1 / 6)
Arrow Storm: (Rank: 1 / 3)
Inoculation : (Rank: 1 / 5)
Precise Weaponry III: (Rank: 2 / 3)
Smoke Bomb: (Rank: 4 / 4)
Barbed Arrows: (Rank: 5 / 5)
Blade Honing: (Rank: 5 / 5)
Precise Weaponry IV: (Rank: 2 / 3)
Poison Bomb: (Rank: 1 / 4)
Scattershot: (Rank: 6 / 6)
Mysterious Toxins: (Rank: 5 / 5)

Sorcery
Arcane Weaponry I: (Rank: 3 / 3)
Storm Bolt: (Rank: 6 / 6)
Arcane Weaponry II: (Rank: 2 / 3)
Chakram Mastery: (Rank: 6 / 6)
Mark of Flame: (Rank: 5 / 5)
Conservative Casting: (Rank: 5 / 5)
Healing Surge: (Rank: 1 / 5)
Chain Lightning: (Rank: 5 / 5)
Ice Barrage: (Rank: 5 / 5)
Arcane Weaponry III: (Rank: 2 / 3)
Smolder: (Rank: 5 / 5)
Frostshackle: (Rank: 5 / 5)
Arcane Weaponry IV: (Rank: 2 / 3)
Tempest: (Rank: 5 / 5)

Basically, Faeblades/Daggers with Bow/Chakrams for my basic combat setup. Four actives are Mark of Flame, Ice Barrage, Storm Bolt/Tempest and Smoke Bomb. Two sustained are Blade Honing and Envenomed Edge.

The three elemental spells are situational. Apart from those, Smoke Bomb can be a great CC skill since it combines with the Poison Bomb upgrade to stun and poison and make me undetectable. From being undetectable, I can pull off critical hits which would have massive damage due to Blade Honing and Assassin's Art.

Something that is frustrating me about purchasing Reckoning: The steam version is the only one that you can't find a deal for, has no bonus items to speak of, yet is the only one that seems like it will put most of the money in 38 Studios pockets, which I want to do. Very frustrating.

So, about character builds-though I am almost always a fighter/dual wield type of player, the magic in this game is fun and impressive-and the Chakrams are pretty fucking awesome, we can all agree.

So i am a little torn between how much I want to put into Might, and how much into Sorcery-Might gets a lot of great talents, like harpoon, quake, the battle frenzy near the top, etc, but by the time you can get even the decent low level talents in both trees you will be level 10 or 15, if not more-which seems like a very long grind. I know they want dual spec builds to be viable, but it seems like you are going to get much more instant gratification with a single spec build early on, else you will literally be spending each level to incrementally upgrade one skill in either discipline.

Basically I am not sure what to do!

You could always buy one of the special editions directly from them. Otherwise, I would imagine that most DD services are relatively close in terms of the money split between them and the developer. To be honest, I think Valve would have the most sway for getting a better deal in their favor.

What are some other good online retailers (with deals) that serve EU customers? Was close to ordering with steam but now I'm having some second thoughts.

I want a class that specializes in melee combat but favors dodging over blocking with a shield. Ideally I don't even want to equip a shield. Is this feasible? I'm guessing Fighter-Rogue would be the closest one?

Why would you play a demo for 30 hours? Serious chance you could burn out when you get the full game. I deleted the demo from my PC for this very reason after one playthrough.

Shield is just another piece of equipment, it's not mandatory as far as I can tell. So yeah you should be fine. In fact I think there are fate cards that improve dodging but I may be misremembering.

Same here. Not because I didn't like the game, I just want to stay fresh.

But are some destinies better at dodging than others? Or is it perfectly reasonable to be a huge warrior fully decked out in massive armor and a greatsword rolling around like a ninja?

I think I saw some early rogue-ish destiny provide a defensive bonus while dodging, 30% if I remember correctly.

The very first Rogue destiny already gives you a 30% damage reduction while rolling.

Ah, that sounds good. Would you mind linking me to the specific bonuses that come from destinies? I can't seem to find it anywhere.

Basically my end goal here is to create a character that specializes much more in melee combat than a pure rogue but still maintains the dodging bonuses associated with those destinies.

Yeah, I have no interest in using a shield, but I do want enough points in sorcery so that rather than rolling, my rogue will be blinking.

My MageKnight build.

Going to focus around spamming quake and elemental rage as much as possible on groups. Once I'm out of mana I will go into the fray with a GS and chakrams. With bulwark, relentless assault, and champion card, I will have constant HYPER armor, and when anyone attacks me they will heal my mana, hurt themselves via thorns effect, and if RNG is good, stun themselves. Then when mana is good enough, go back to spamming ER and quake.

On paper seems good.

It struck me as odd that it's damage received that's converted to mana as opposed to damage dealt, because it's sort of punishing you for having more armor if you think about it. The less damage you take, the less mana you get as a result. :(

Next Tuesday can't come soon enough.

Anyone else rollin Mage/Warrior? Probably going for a lightning/greatsword build myself

With relentless assault active I lose 50% armor in exchange for the hyper armor, so it kinda helps.

Did the same here. Ive only played through the demo once, although I definitely have had the urge to go back. Just figured Im 100% getting the game day one regardless, may as well wait.

I didn't even leave the dungeon in the demo. I want to experience everything new in the full game and pull an all nighter.

Hail, peons, for I have come as ambassador from the great and bountiful Blueberry Butt Explosion
I love the class card art. I'm going to jump on the bandwagon and use the Paragon card.

This just feels so cheap. WoW+GoW = this generic, simplified press-X-to-skip-dialogue piece of shit. Like so many other titles with potential these days.

I can't feel the hype for this game at all and I'm surprized that so many in this thread seems to adore it. I mean, c'mon! They should've named it Kingdoms of Generic: Generic.

They should have named you McDouchebag... oh wait. Just messing with ya, but opinions vary. Deal with it.
