I normally don't worry about your fave because, really, what's the point in coming for Madonna? She might not be my fave, but I use some of her music, I do respect her unparalleled-among-female-pop-stars overall commercial accomplishments, and as pedestrian as her vocals are, she's not truly bad (and she's actually worked on improving them, which is more than I can say for this generation's mediocre vocal talents); she's simply average and only bad in a relative sense.

You may say you aren't coming from Madonna but your post has more shades of bitterness than fact.

I'm not a fan of Madonna's current studio vocal, though the 1-million-in-1-week selling MDNA is a vast improvement over the nasal crow we got served with Hard Candy.

She always gives a better delivery live, for some strange reason, she drops an octave and stops sounding like a kindergaten teacher.

MUMU, HOWEVER, has fallen furthest from the tree when it comes to transformation, a shadow of her former self; weight and voice.

Well-shes-a-gir.gif

Can we just briefly touch on that subject? While SALES EXTRAVAGANZA ADELE keeps it classy and low key, Mumu INSISTS on looking like a hooker in size 16.

celebrity-pictures-mariah-carey-lady-turds.jpg

Lambs say that Mumu's vocals remain unsurpassed in the industry, but her wig was snatched in 1999 when Xtincta landed on the scene, like it or not. Mumu can't give the Lambs a decent delivery of Hero these days, let alone We Belong Together (the end being famously mimed in absence of ABILITY).

Has Mumu even released anything since The Desperation of Mumu? I wouldn't be able to tell you.

What does Mumu have to offer when the voice is well and truly gone? Bit-parts in low budget films with an all-fat cast?

Time for Lambs to put themselves out to pasture.

But with that said, that is a rather comical thing for you to be saying as someone stanning for an entertainer whose primary accomplishment this year so far is getting to number one through months of pre-sales, followed by a precipitous drop off a cliff the next week

Becoming the most successful artist in UK history last month wasn't an accomplishment?

Nobodies faves... hell, even TRYING to finish that sentence is an INSULT to YOUR FAVE.

and whose sole real bragging right this year will come from having what will probably be the biggest tour of the year ... which her fans will come to in order to live on past glories.

How does that work? Will they be going to a stadium to watch the Girlie Show DVD? Madonna keeps her tours current and seldom performs songs we actually WANT to hear.

She isn't big on fan service. She wouldn't rerecord an overblown ballad from 15 years ago with worse vocals ala Mumu.

Nope. I wasn't coming for her. I was just pointing out how comical your comment was in light of recent events. I'm not really invested in the whole Mariah vs Madonna thing, perhaps because I wasn't really a Mariah fan until fairly recently and the whole 90s rivalry is sort of uninteresting to me, and possibly also because I tend to put pop stars who are known for being great entertainers and pop stars who are known for being great singers into different categories in my head and don't really bother comparing them except when they are egregiously awful (e.g. Rihanna) because their appeal to me is fundamentally different.

You seem rather invested in it judging from this post.

I'm not a fan of Madonna's current studio vocal, though the 1-million-in-1-week selling MDNA is a vast improvement over the nasal crow we got served with Hard Candy.

She's sold a million internationally in her first week? That's actually better than I'd thought. Are her second-week sales holding up internationally?

Lambs say that Mumu's vocals remain unsurpassed in the industry, but her wig was snatched in 1999 when Xtincta landed on the scene, like it or not. Mumu can't give the Lambs a decent delivery of Hero these days, let alone We Belong Together (the end being famously mimed in absence of ABILITY).

Mariah and Whitney were essentially tied between 1990 and 1993 and one could reasonably take either on the basis of what you preferred. Between 1994 - 1996, between Mariah becoming stronger vocally and Whitney's drug use and nodules catching up to her, Mariah was clearly the best. Then Whitney was clearly and inarguably better between 1997 and 1999, after Mariah's vocal nodules caught up with her. Celine was also better during that same time period; despite mediocre-at-times technique, she was simply in better voice than either Mariah or Whitney were. Christina, on the other hand, wouldn't even have an argument for 1999 - 2000, which were her best years and among Mariah's worst, short of 2008 - 2009 and 1997 - 1998. But yes, her 1995 - 1996 vocals in particular remain unsurpassed short of arguably mid-1980s Whitney Houston.

And despite the lipsyncing she's done in recent years, she has sung We Belong Together live multiple times, and is still among the best pop singers around despite her vocal decline.

Becoming the most successful artist in UK history last month wasn't an accomplishment?

... She already was the most successful artist in UK history in the only important way; in terms of total album sales. Congratulations on the additional #1 album, though.

And I forgot about it. =X
How does that work? Will they be going to a stadium to watch the Girlie Show DVD? Madonna keeps her tours current and seldom performs songs we actually WANT to hear.

I wouldn't know what Madonna stans want to her from her that she's not giving, but looking at the setlist for, say, Sticky and Sweet tour, I see songs of hers that I like (Human Nature, Vogue, Like A Prayer, Frozen, Hung Up, Ray of Light, Borderline, etc.). Obviously when you have a discography as large as she does, there will always be fan favorites that will be left off, but it doesn't seem like she's going out of her way to avoid the greatest hits of her career.

In conclusion, Mariah Carey is fat.

You missed one:

You got a laugh out of me with that conclusion, though, so bravo for that.

Madonna as an overall performer and package as a Pop Queen I agree she's better than Mariah. But in terms of artistry and as a vocalist Mariah wins without lifting a finger lol

A few months LTTP on this one, but I searched the thread and I don't think anyone posted about it...

I think Pop-Gaf would really like it!

And since we're on this topic of discussion:
Popmatters said:
If there’s a blueprint to Visions it’s to lasso a pure pop vocal melody from the ‘80s/‘90s—preferably early Madonna or Mariah. Speed it up, slow it down, turn it around and then tip it into a blender amongst masterfully diced hip-hop beats and lightly chopped Far East synth-spices.

Mariah's curves may change with the weather, but all that matters is that her flaw-free countenance has remained flaw-free since the beginning of her career. Your aged and decrepit fave wishes she could be even momentarily mistaken for her 1990's counterpart.

tumblr_l9sxa1gY0t1qa4x59o1_500.png

So you can browse for shopped images all you like, but it won't change the fact that your fave has aged as well as a fried patty left out in the sun.

Genuflect and worship the Queen, who somehow had the inner strength to publicly utter Mandonna's name without suddenly going into an epileptic fit at its sheer ugliness.

Mariah is the Dorian Gray of Pop Music. Her voice ages instead of her face.

kylie is flying and there aren't wires or anything! i'm digging her commitment to the theme in this gig.

Closer is a goddamn masterpiece. It's the definition of a sensual song.

But I feel like it could've been more. It's only 3 minutes long, and the song structure isn't all that interesting.

But goddamn, how I love that song. <3

How To Read (Acid to Alkaline):
-5 = Lady Gaga: When you snatch that many wigs in three years you the most acidic bitch in the game.
-4 = Marina & The Diamonds: When you shade as many bitches as she did then manage to get on their tours with music that slays their’s you’re acidic.
-3 = Beyoncé: You’re Beyoncé.
-2 = Justin Timberlake: When your ass leaves the game after two albums but people scream for years after for you to come back, you’re acidic.
-1 = Adele: Because 21 will be on the charts for another 21 years.
0 = Madonna: You coined the term “iconic” but you bent the coin the last two times out.
1 = M.I.A.: You do what Rihanna thinks she’s doing and your label doesn’t drop your ass for shading their top seller. You got something going.
2 = Rihanna: You put out albums faster than a runner from your home country, but they lose their steam around single #2.
3 = Ke$ha: When you’re doing shit the radio plays you to death, but since you’ve been gone people miss all your strikingly similar sounding songs.
4 = Kelly Clarkson: Your pussy is America’s sweetheart and you’re one of the, if not only, few American Idol winners that Simon Cowell can stand and isn’t bankrupt three times over.
5 = Lana Del Rey: Your album is great but when you open your mouth live people want to smash the disc and swallow the jagged, plastic shards.
6 = Britney Spears: Releasing music is all you know how to do anymore and no one has shut you off yet. Get it girl.
7 = Selena Gomez: You lead the basic pack because you know when to stop talking.
8 = One Direction: You’re a boy band so by nature you’re basic, but if you can snatch The Beatles’ wig you deserve some credit.
9 = Justin Bieber: Peter Pan syndrome, even if you don’t want it.
10 = Demi Lovato: Your claim to fame is you fucked a Jonas Brother and went nuts, the world ain’t here for that.
11 = Katy Perry: Not quite queen of Basic Bitches, but you’re trying as hard as you can to be that and someone else.
12 = Jessie J: You’re a british Katy and we don’t want the American Katy. Next.
13 = LMFAO: Self explanatory.
14 = Nicki Minaj: So basic that you’ve entered a state of Basic Nirvana, in which you are unable to hear the deafening cries of “PLEASE STOP!”

I agree with it for the most part. But Marina? lol. No shade to her stans tho.

Anyone formed an opinion on Lights album?

I've been listening to it constantly for the last few days and I like it. It's not something you'll be singing along too, but it's cool to have on in the background.

Anyone remember this Xtina interview post VMA kiss with Brit and Madge? I still remember how pressed she was that no one even noticed Madonna kissed her too lol. And when she shaded Brit, MTV, Madonna and the MATM video as if her videos weren't a Kmart version of Britney's videos

The only time I ever didn't like her was that era tbh, she had a grudge against all the other gurls

My favorite part of that kiss wasn't even the actual kiss. It was when the camera panned to Justin Timberlake in the audience. Guuuurrrrllll, to say he was PRESSED would be an understatement.

Hey! ONLY her dance videos (and to be fair, EVERY female pop act was trying to copy Brit's video game back then), but Christina pretty much carved her own lane when it came to videos for her ballads. Let's not forget the iconic videos for Beautiful and Fighter.

What a dull and uninspired woman compared to this

Madonna's ability to reinvent her image is one of the best things about her.

What's the name of that song where in the music video she's in this like.... desert-y landscape, wearing a black dress / gown, and with shoulder-length or slightly longer black hair? I might be misremembering the elements somewhat, but that picture you just posted reminded me of it. It was a picture in a book I had when I was a child.

I actually QUITE LIKE Pariah

Yes, but how do you feel about Janice?

Oh, I forgot about this song. I love it. The humming part is *chills*

Also:

"This Song is said To Support illuminate, and illuminate is a secret society which is like a whole different religion,Islam and Christians have some conflicts with this society's ways of life and its rules and it is Said That illuminate is made to support dajjal (al-Masih ad-Dajjal (Arabic:المسيح الدجّال‎ al-Masīḥ ad-Dajjāl, Arabic for "the false messiah"),which will appear before dooms day and Jesus will land on earth with two angels and will find to eliminate dajjal with muslims warriors.

Where does one cross the line between re-invention and pandering? It seems to me like her new album/persona is an overt attempt to buy her way back to relevance; like she looked at a Billboard chart and said "ok send Nicki a check and get me some Gaga b-side dance tracks too."

To be perfectly honest, I haven't listened to anything off of her new album besides GMAYL, which I thought was, well, I think someone else said it best. So it didn't really inspire me to check out the rest of the album.

I meant more historically, since I don't really know about this last album. I can certainly see how it might look like that, though.

Easy.

It's re-invention when you're creating trends. Pandering when you're following.

Madonna used to be the undisputed queen of evolving into something that was entirely her own lane (or at least evolving into a pre-existing trend so boldly that she eclipsed whatever lessor was doing it before). "Frozen" is a great example of this.

Now her re-invention is just latching on to current trends a day late (dubstep breakdowns are so 2011) and not doing them well enough to really put her own stamp. Madonna's too busy riding in the "I can still do that!" lane to be in the lane that's rightfully hers: "I'm too good to do that."

I'm hopeful she has one more GROUNBREAKING album left in her. Even though her last two uninspired albums have set a bad precedent going into the future, she did manage to deliver Confessions in 2005. That was a reinvention 22 years into her career. I don't think any other artist can claim they were still doing something worthwhile after so many years in the game.

Sorry, but I think the title Queen of Rug Munching has been reserved for Belly Clarkson's coming out.

... Wait, do you actually think Kelly's a lesbian or is this just you being silly? My gaydar with regards to women has always been nonexistent (except for, you know, the ones who go out of their way to make it obvious and even then I probably get false positives) so I have no idea.

She's pretty butch. I've never seen her with a guy.

Then again, Sporty Spice had us ALL FOOLED.

This is my favorite Kelly ballad. It sort of sounds like a poppy version of Radiohead's "Exit Music."
