RUMOUR: Xbox One version of Call of Duty: Ghosts is 720p, PS4 version is 1080p?

I took a 1920x1080 native image and compare it against the same image which was shrunk to 720p and then upscaled back to 1080. I think this roughly demonstrates the difference.

You can pretty clearly see a difference, particularly if you look at fine lines or less clear things, such as the dudes on the roof. And overall it's just a bit crisper in 1080. Some people may notice or care more than others. To some it may not be a big deal to be in 720. To others nothing is a bigger deal.

Now imagine the casual gamer coming in here and actually saying they give a shit about any of this. It just doesn't fit.

That is where this whole idea that the resolution is a gamechanger just completely rams head first into a wall. The difference may be "pretty clear" to the hardcore or those that are looking to max out their PC every few months, but to people who play xbox live and make your momma jokes into the mic? Really?

I'm sure a half life 3+Shenmue3 reveal wouldn't grow half as fast.

man.

It is a pretty simple narrative.

Which has COD?
Both, but PS4 looks better and it is cheaper.
Ok I'll get a PS4.

This is exactly the kind of thing that would matter for the average consumer. Trying to explain GPU and RAM speed differences is where you will get small returns.

Which is why it is baffling. It seemed Sony was endlessly helping out third parties to try to get PS3 games up to scratch. Now that it is Microsoft's turn they apparently don't even know of the issue ... from their closest partners.

who says they don't know? Just because Albert says he's not sure doesn't mean they aren't scrambling behind the scenes to try to get it up to par. CBOAT pretty much said that everyone knew that 720p was happening but they are just not being honest about it.

I personally would like to see more usage of "Steven Seagal shooting kids" and "Garbage Day" gifs myself. Maybe Panello (Nappa's Head) asking Nelson (Vegeta's Head) what does the scouter say about PS4's CoD resolution... "it's over 720p". I suck at gifs though.

That's the spirit. There are so many gifs and situations to choose from.

Or maybe I'm just getting sick of seeing the same few gifs over and over again.

If it doesn't matter then why has MS been trying so hard to convince us that there is no power gap?

Well it wouldn't, but that's because the servers would be on fire instead of serving our requests.

my younger relatives don't talk resolution/frames/AA but they do assume xbox ports are 'better' as a matter of fact. They can't really articulate it beyond that, but they do care that it's 'better' and all of their friends think it's 'better' and that they have the 'better' system.

The hardcore will help PS4 grab an early sales lead and mindshare.

This is how the 360 challenged Sony after PS2's dominance.

I agree, I don't think the average consumer cares much about this kind of thing. It could be bad PR though, especially when combined with the "cheaper and more powerful" message PS4 already has going. The PR thing is probably the bigger problem than average consumers being hung up over resolutions.

Well that is the question. If they knew, why are we here?

#1 job for Microsoft should be to sort out call of duty.

What res is Ryse? That game shows what can be done on the box for launch, so I don't understand how an ugly game like Ghosts' 720p is somehow indicative of anything

Dito. We are LTTP of an epic thread.

Although I am again surprised that such news still struck us as a megaton. It has been known that the XBO just has weaker graphics hardware, and all the talk about "balance" could, at best, only clarify that Microsoft's engineers are not as incompetent as some people say, but not that the XBO is on par with the PS4.

Why are you quoting someone who made a very flawed comparison? The actual difference is much more than he tried to show.

they probably are throwing as many devs as they can at the problem but that only takes you so far and they just ran out of time. We know for sure they wouldnt let the ps version release first and activision sure as hell won't delay the entire launch, so i guess they just will deal with 720p and the eventual fallout.

Ryse is 900p. Also it is indicative of the Xbox One's power when Ghosts comes out on the PS4 also. Ryse looks good at 900p on X1 but we can't tell how it would look/perform on a PS4. This meltdown isn't about how powerful the X1 is but rather how much less powerful it is compared to PS4.

Watch the IGN 1080P PS4 footage of Ghosts when you get a chance

It is so visually underwhelming you'll be wondering how the XB1 can't push out 1080P for it

That's what the rest of us were trying to wrap our heads around at first, but now we've entered the acceptance stage of the reveal

Well it's gotta be indicative of something. Maybe Activision just doesn't spend enough on the quantity and quality of their crunch dinners.

Well, in theory, they'd have 6 more months to play the contract manufacturing market and get the specs they really want. Sony has changed the PS4 pretty significantly from the first few versions to what is being released. Microsoft had no such option in order to play catch up. Basically had to go out and kitbash a HTPC with their architecture.

Damn, Sony gave MS quite a headstart currentgen and let them take over the US significanty and in general a lot market share but look how they feared Sony's efforts to create such a mess. I don't think waiting till spring 2014 with a better performance approach would have have been more disastrous than this release.

The 720p by a little little bit,

If on my 40'' stretched out they look identical from 8ft away there not going to look drasticly different on a 47inch

and yes 7inches will make some difference, but this difference will be fucking tiny.

On my 46" 1080p TV, I can tell a very real difference on my PS3 between Red Dead Redemption, which runs at 640p and is blurry, vs GTA V or Last of Us, which run at 720p and are distinctly sharper but still slightly blurred due to scaling, vs. games like Sleeping Dogs, Borderlands 2 or Far Cry 3 running off my PC at 1080p which look perfectly sharp and crisp on my TV.

like I said.

what is the proper distance to watch film screens. its the identical activity. the distance argument is meh and always will be, due to how much the nation enjoys film, and the quality, and the hd/stereo/imax screenings.

This is the 19'th dumbest thing I've read on the internet of all time.

If you watch IMAX at 16k at 60' and they increase to 32k you may notice 0 fucking difference.
If you sit 25' from a 60" and it's 480p and increase to 720 or 1080p you may notice,... 0 fucking difference.

How closely people sit to movies and how much they love them (wtf) is infact completely irrelevant, the key thing we're debating here is RESOLUTION in this thread, the screen size, resolution and viewing distance are fucking absoloutely key components of this discussion. that's the crux of the matter, period.

You MAY sit close enough, my point was and is, how many do?

Crytek is one of the most technically proficient teams in the world.

It is like if Naughty Dog had a launch title ready for the PS4.

Well heck, GG is very good and look at what they have done with Killzone at launch @ 1080p.

Ryse is 900p x 30fps

Killzone is 1080p x 60fps ( MP ), higher fidelity 30fps ( sp )

If Crytek cannot push the X1 that far, noone else MS has will ever be able to do it.

It is not purely the ram that is making the difference, the PS4 has a much better GPU as well.

That 67GB/s main memory bandwidth bottleneck will never be overcome. When I saw that I flipped my shit. Could not believe it.

I saw this coming in May, as soon as that number was shown.

But your right, the GPU in the PS4 is astoundingly more powerful.

18 CU's vs. 12
32 ROPs vs. 16
1.8Tflop vs. 1.3Tflops
178GB/s bandwidth vs. 67GB/s
1200 ( rounded ) shader units vs. 800 ( rounded )
GDDR5 RAM made for graphic engines vs. DDR3 made for CPU tasking

Some of the reaction is unwarranted. We've been hearing rumours that development on the Xbox is a few months behind that of Sony's machine, so it wouldn't be entirely surprising that some games weren't as polished; we saw this early on in the life of the PS3 too if you recall.

But most importantly, despite the tone of some of the posts here, the Xbox One isn't limited to 720p; we see it producing Ryse and Forza; these are the games from devs who have had more time to polish.

And to the COD crowd? Since when was COD a graphics powerhouse? The game will still more copies than anything on the shelf irrespective of this news. If anything, I the delay to Driveclub is probably more harmful than this

Oh wow, I thought I've slept more than one night. I'm surprised that this thread went boom without most of europeans.
It kinds of remind me of Madden 07 and GTAIV but without any evidence. Can't wait when both launch and we can compare the real truth.

It would be big if that gap of both resolutions. I was expecting something like up to 150p different or slightly different texture and filters.

Wow. I missed out on all the fun. Any recap or should I jump to page one for awesomeness?

So what's going on in here?

famousmortimer teases a big bomb in COD thread, but doesn't say what it is until confirmation.

BruceLeeRoy, bishoptl, and a few others also hint at it until thuway comes and drops the 720p bomb for COD,

Lots of collaborating quotes from various insiders, amir0x creates new thread, albert pinello comes and tries to refute the claims, cboat shows up and drops truthfacts directly against albert.

Crazy day.
