Was there something wrong in what he said?
In PS4 they didn't mess with anything, they just increased the resolution (and maybe added other effects). There's no loss in details compared to Xbox One. What you think as higher details is just an filter applied by Xbox One to make the colors pop, you can do the same thing with PS4, just mess with contrast and sharpness options in your TV.
You keep ignoring the fact that you CAN replicate the Xbox image on the PS4 by completely ruining the image.
How does this not get through to you?
That's why people said that you could turn up the sharpness setting on your TV, for one, to replicate that "filter".Ok, thank you for not being a smarmy ass in the reply.
I know it's a filter - but I like the filter and if they applied the same filter at the higher resolution to the PS4? I'd probably like that image even more. I'm not being MS biased here or something.

It does now, that's awesome! I'd prefer that on my PS4 please!
(I also at no point was implying the Xbox image wasn't possible on the PS4, simply that I prefered the look of the Xbox image)
My point is really, I'd be happy to see even the PS4 version at a lower resolution and with even more detail.

Both games have the same textures and effects, what are you even talking about? Are you trying to argue 720p is more detailed than 1080p when both have the same assets? Also your first link doesn't work.
Darker and blown out or blurrier? Pick your poison.

But I thought there's no way the Xbox One is giving up 30% power advantage to PS4.
simply that I prefered the look of the Xbox image
That would not happen as long as Xbox One exist, adding more details is liking adding exclusive content to PS4 games, that will piss MS and Xbox One owners, no studio is courage enough to do that.
And that is what I am saying...if you like that sharpen filter so much go into your TV settings and mess around with the sharpen and contrast options and bump everything up.
I still don't understand why you keep saying higher resolution to the PS4 though.
Pray tell, how is a less detailed image, with sharpening artifacts and black crush preferable to crisper detail, smooth edges and accurate contrast?
Yeah, I think Ill just stick with the normal mode and assume that like always this just launch mistakes that will be corrected in time.
Albert Penello said:People DO understand that Microsoft has some of the smartest graphics programmers IN THE WORLD. We CREATED DirectX, the standard APIs that everyone programs against. So while people laude Sony for their HW skills, do you really think we dont know how to build a system optimized for maximizing graphics for programmers? Seriously? There is no way were giving up a 30%+ advantage to Sony. And ANYONE who has seen both systems running could say there are great looking games on both systems. If there was really huge performance difference it would be obvious.
Listen, if you saw both running side by side, you would change your tune. My cousin had his XBone over on Thanksgiving, along with AC4 (He's a big fan of the series). After seeing it running on my PS4, he was all kinds of envious, and didn't want to go back to his version. Seeing them both on my Panny plasma, it's no contest which is the superior version; those "colors" and "pop" that you think you are seeing are just obscuring details that are vivid and sharp on PS4. It is what it is, if you prefer a worst image because of some imaginary color advantage, hey, whatever floats your boat. You're absoloutely correct, I apologise I am kind of taking the thread off topic.
My point is really, I'd be happy to see even the PS4 version at a lower resolution and with even more detail.
This incessant whining the last 12 weeks over resolution has driven me batty.
*I'm definitely not saying the Xbox picture is superior because it's lower resolution, that's not my point, that's dumb.
*I'm not saying the Xbox picture is superior due to better assets (that would be completely untrue, they are the same)
*What I am saying is, the resolution difference, to my eyes, is mostly insignificant, compared to the nicer colours I see on the Xbox and how things stand out (note the chest on map radar in the lower corner for example)
Do I think the PS4 shot looks "bad" ? Fuck no, of course not! both are quite nice shots.
Ok but the picture is nicer to my eyes, (for AC4 that is, Ghosts is an obvious abortion, clearly inferior in all ways)
Not my point or what I believe, sorry. No.
Ok, thank you for not being a smarmy ass in the reply.

I guess the question is how many people would prefer losing color detail for higher contrast?
Unsharpened looks way better. The HUD won't be rendered in 1080p, though. I'd take a softer image without ringing and halos any day.

Set the Bone to 720pHow do I do it? Is it in the xbox menu, or something I need to do on my tv?
Maybe I will mess around with it, but I need new glasses so it wont matter much til I get them,
You can do the same fucking thing they're doing with Xbone shots with your TV. Go to contrast and crank it to 100. Go to sharpness and crank it to 100.It's definitely possible that in motion on my plasma, I might find the washed out look actually kind of sucks, that I can't be sure of without trying, won't deny it.
None the less in shots, I found that Xbox one stood out, hence me commenting.
Personally, I'll never get to see the Xbox One version so I'll never know! I'm sure I'll be happy with the PS4 quality, it's certainly not "bad" by any means.
But maybe you would like the image better.I wouldn't want to fuck with my movies / TV - prefer it to be an ingame option
Sorry I don't understand?
Ok, thank you for not being a smarmy ass in the reply.

That has no bearing in this comparison, because both have the same assets. The XBone isn't adding anything extra because it's running at a lower res, it's the same thing. Wishing for 720p in games just to add more detail is irrelevant here. He's obviously saying that given the same limitations, when you lower the resolution, you free up some room to allow more assets, so it's not always the case where 1080p is the best resolution. It's possible to have a 1600 x 900 with a good method of anti-aliasing applied to make a game that looks overall better than what would've been possible had they sacrificed some eye candy in order to achieve full 1080p.
Eventually game engines will become so advanced that even PS4 games that shoot for those visuals will be 720p in order to keep up with the PC, but you better bet that those games will make early PS4 games look like a joke, despite them running 1080p... capice?
Man I dont want ghosts at all but I REALLY want to play that space sequence
So the sharpening filter seems to be on purpose if you can turn it off by forcing the XB1 to output 720p. That seems odd
But maybe you would like the image better.
Explain the bolded:
I know it's a filter - but I like the filter and if they applied the same filter to the PS4's higher resolution? I'd probably like that image even more. I'm not being MS biased here or something.
The power of resolution.Have you not seen the Dark Souls gif pre- and post- Durante's fix?
Holy shit! AC4 already looks pretty sub par on PS4 due to all the last gen assets, but that Xbox One pic is something else. That's atrocious looking.
it only makes it less since it doesn't have to stretch the image. its still there.. and more importantly the contrast filter is still there.
Ok, thank you for not being a smarmy ass in the reply.

The power of resolution.
Which looks better?
Yet again I find myself liking the Xbox shots more due to the washed out looking colours on the PS4 shots, this is occuring across multiple games now, what's the cause?
EDIT:
OOOF ok that second COD: Ghosts shot........ that's kind of a bit more blatent, that's a big ding on the Xbox One for sure.
EDIT2: and Madden? Nope prefer the contrast on the Xbox One shot again, resolution difference is minimal.
Really really hard to spot the difference on the NBA shot, couldn't care less.
Guess I'm a sucker for contrast filters, I love the darker one!
Nope. You can clearly tell that Killzone is better looking, but AC4 has blown me away. It's stunning.
Guess I'm a sucker for contrast filters, I love the darker one!
Which looks better?
I mean, I can understand his argument. Detail easily trumps resolution any day of the week, which he proves. You need your eyes checked. I bet you think TV's in the showroom look great also.
