Daaamn, Tales of the Abyss is also coming out on Feb 14, and Devil Survivor 2 on Feb 28. I love all the obscure-ish JRPG support the PSP and DS have gotten <3

Darn why does Vita have to not play UMD's, now I cant get the limited edition artbook edition...

Exactly what I'm keeping my PSP-3000 around even after I get my Vita. I've still got some UMD stuff I'd like to hold on to that will probably never see a digital release ( Tales of the World, Tales of Eternia PSP and Tales of Rebirth just to name a few) so it just makes sense to keep it around.

i had a old 1000 psp and i recently got a 3000 for cheap ( very cheap )... i have 2 working PSP consoles and i plan to buy the vita .. that way , i'm able to stiill get UMDs( that's why i got Fate/extra )

Complaining about umds is the past ... want the artbook ? then do something about it .. the game is reasonnably priced and Cheap psps can be found quite easily .

As for hakuoki , i know what i'll take

Stop tempting me to get this game. The first few month of 2012 are already filled with RPGs asking for my money.

Also, just a heads up, it seems GameStop won't be supplying the standard edition anymore, only the LE, so if you want the standard edition, you'll have to pre-order/order it elsewhere :)

Just what I need (though I can't bear to change my current one. ;P).

Damn, now that I think about it, my February is going to be ridiculously packed.
-New Suikoden
-Hakuoki
-Vita (which is already paid off anyway and is technically a very late grad present, though I've been thinking of cancelling my preorder and waiting a bit in case there are hardware defects that will be addressed later on. I can just buy the software I want now and purchase the hardware later. You know what, I think I'm going to do that, so I now have $250 to spare, lol.)
-Tales of the Abyss 3DS
-Rhythm Thief
-Devil Survivor 2
-Grand Knights History

-Graces f is going to be in March (double-dipping on that to support the series in the west--plus it's one of my favourite Tales games ever)
-FFXIII-2 in January

I'm pretty lucky that I have a week off in February. :lol

Yesssss, I love reading through these. Always so well-written.

And now Saito is once again one of those potential choices I have in mind. But no one seems to like Okita, so I'll go with him, lol.

Okita's route is actually probably my favorite. <3

Also, glad to hear you're enjoying the man of the month things. Writing them is...an experience.

I expect Okita to be one of those hot and cold types. He seems interesting, partically because of his contemporary speech, and also because he seems like an asshole. :lol

How do you come up with the scenarios for these? Saito's article scenario painted him very well and definitely made him appealing to me.

My "process" usually goes a little like this:

  • Read through whatever magazine we're going to be aping (in Saito's case, it was the New Yorker) to try and get a feel for the kind of things you'd see in that sort of publication, and for how they write/like their contributors to write.
  • Write up a list of characteristics that define that character, and some of their most notable, or more important, attributes. For Saito, my list looked like this:
    • Quiet
    • Serious
    • Obedient
    • Needs rules, etc
    • Traditional
    • Has done some shady things while under orders
    • Morality seems to be dictated by others
    • Left-handed (not accepted sword style)
    • Uses Iai-do
    • He uses up a lot of swords
  • Stare at the list for a couple hours.
  • Dick around on the internet for a couple days.
  • Freak out and realize that I need to have it done and approved in three days.
  • Actually sit down and write the thing, which involves drawing on the previous list, but also drawing from the characterizations and speech patterns I developed for the characters while I was working on the game. In the case of Saito, a big part of his characterization is that he doesn't talk much, and when he does it's well thought-out, slightly formal, and often more introspective/deep/philosophical than you might expect. That's why he only has...I think 4 actual "lines" in his whole article. He is, literally, a man of few words. Another example would be Hijikata, who talks in an almost Rorschach-like manner: Clipping words he doesn't need out of sentences and being almost brutally to-the-point.
  • Send it off to Idea Factory, so they can approve it.
  • Get their requests back and rage, because they want to change things about my perfect opus.
  • Make most of their changes.
  • PROFIT

Writing them ranges from supremely satisfying (Saito's is probably my favorite so far) to table-flippingly frustrating—Harada and Okita, for instance, ended up with articles that felt way too similar to me. I'm in a weird position writing them: I don't want to reveal important plot points (Because that's...kind of what you get the game for), and I can't just make stuff up willy-nilly ("In this month's issue of Swords Illustrated, read the incredible story of how Toshizo Hijikata beat no less than five tigers into submission, naked, with his bare hands") because a) It could end up disappointing people when those things don't actually happen (see: naked tiger fight) and b) and serious liberties will almost certainly get shot down by Idea Factory and I'll have to go back and think of something else anyway.

I used some historical events (i.e., I read Wikipedia) to come up with some of the stuff that the articles talk about, but most of the time is spent with me tearing my hair out and going "How can I show how much of a dreamboat this guy is?! I can't devote an entire article to describing his rippling abs and perfect buttocks!" Or maybe I could do that: You tell me. I still have to write the Kazama one. :3

Fun fact: Originally, I wanted the title of Saito's article to be "Silent But Deadly."

Also yes, Okita is kind of an asshole, but he's the good kind of asshole. Like House.

I knew it was The New Yorker! The style was nailed down pretty well. (Part of my satisfaction while reading these is trying to figure out which style you're using.)

Sounds like a lot of work, but as long as it's enjoyable (and it does sound pretty fun), then no issues. It sounds like how I come up with stuff for papers, only my "screwing around on the internet for a few days" is generally longer and go up to about 1-2 days prior to the due date. And definitely--with my undergraduate thesis--when I sent something to my supervisor to get it approved and then it came back with a ton of sticky notes and things written in everywhere, I just... *sigh*

Saito's characterization, to me, seemed like he was more a man of getting things done first and foremost and talking later--albeit not much. It's probably my favourite article so far, just because the characterization was done so well in it.

Couldn't tell ya what to focus on for the final article, though. I'm pretty certain it'll go well, though. All girls/guys are different. I generally pay attention to a guy's personality as opposed to what they can do and a good sense of humour is typically what I'm attracted to (though speed and quick action like in Saito's article was really great), but other girls/guys might want to know about a guy's looks or what he's capable of doing in order to gauge whether they want to go for him or not.

It also depends on the magazine/paper that you're trying to ape as well!

Saito being left-handed makes me ^_^ (and... uh, it's not because I'm, like, biased or anything... >.>).

Did anyone call the OT? Because I'd like to if no one else will.
Looking forward to it. I would've done it but my GIMP skills aren't up to par still... and I'm ridiculously busy this week. :/

Weeeee, I'm so excited for this. It isn't often that we get localized (!!!) otome games. It's probably what I'm looking forward to the most this Feb outside of the Vita (my little hype for Suikoden has waned to the point of just wanting to try it out).

Not sure this is the right place to ask and I hate to ask this but are there any assurances this is actually going to work on the Vita starting day 1 (the digital version obviously)? Only asking because it wasn't mentioned in the list on the PS Blog today.

Six days away and I'm excited for this one, it'd be nice if I could play it when I get my Vita since I just traded in my PSP :\
