Official 1up Yours GDC Week Thread of Resistance Hatin', Babbling Vagabonds

Man, these threads are becoming 2x more intelligent to 4x dumber. For every cool discussion you get a bunch of posts totally missing the point and somehow managing to end up defensive.

How was the episode? Hopefully epic.

mellow but pretty good -- both shows had to be shorter today because of timing. gfw was fun, and the phrase "homo erectus" was uttered at least 17 times. also, I think Jeff's breathing might be prevalent in the recording, so advance warning.

It's high time I take Amy's advice regarding message boards. Fuckin A.

You should Shawn, all the BS that you've put up with is pretty insane. Why people get offended so easily over someones OPINIONS on videogames is ridiculous to me. We're not talking about life or death, just game preferences.

My take on the whole how story should be told in games; I don't give a crap how they tell me the story as long as the games fun to play. If its fun to play then I can look past storytelling faults; crap/campy dialogue, hello DMC series, along with bad voice acting ruin a story for me more than how they choose to tell a story.

Was that him yesterday? It was kinda noticeable, but no one else mentioned it, so I thought it was all in my head. Black Dragon, indeed.

He shouldn't be driven away by typical obnoxious forum warriors...

Even though I might not always agree with him, I think this is a great way to interface with people like Shawn. So I hope I didn't have a hand in pissing him off.

I did a google image search to try to find a "turn that frown upside down" picture to post for you, but by the second page I was already getting porn and "teen lesbian hunters." It's true what they say: it's about the journey, not the destination.

It rarely happens (if ever) in the GFW threads.

Seriously, what is it with some peoples inability to take an opinion as an opinion? So what if you disagree, if that is a case, all that you need to do is spell it out in a single fucking post. No need to bait people and throw toys out the pram.

An example for the dim wits:

Shawn: "Game XYZ is mediocre"
You: "I disagree, for me it is a good game, not amazing but certainly not mediocre. I personally think that the multiplayer is the best part of the game. Maybe you should give it a go and let us know what you think of that on the next podcast?"
Actual GAF Response: "Shit you never played the game man its fucking amazing man. You played like 1 level and think you can judge it on that, what an idiot!! Multiplayer is wicked and your just a dick if you think otherwise".

Obviously slightly to the extreme but not by much (not everyone... but quite a few people, especially in last weeks thread). Seriously.... intelligent debate.
Shawn, stick to answering the mostly intelligent queries in the GFW threads.....

Oh good podcast again. The permanent 4 should are shaping up to be really good. Everyone brings something different to the table.

Just had to express my disappointment that Brian Jarrard didnt make it to the show. I was really looking forward to hearing Bungie and IW speaking together and to each other.

One button combat in Fable 2? I've forgotten if Fable 1 was like that (game was so damned dull).

That sounds...weird.

Indeed, but he receives similar hostility on the show as well.

That's why he NEEDS to be on the show. On top of him almost always being right, we need someone to tell Shane to shut up every once in a while ;)

Second, like Amy said, if you're going to make me sit through a linear, cutscene driven narrative, make it good. I agree that non-interactive cutscenes in general don't necessarily leverage the strengths of the format, but since we're just talking about cutscenes now anyway, they better be good if they are going to exist at all. Otherwise they are just an abstraction blocking gameplay.

I was interested to hear what Amy said, but ultimately in kind of rang hollow to me. I question whether anybody currently in the game industy can make a quality narrative. I simply have never seen a good story in the hundreds of games I've played in my life.
Compare the stories in games to good film or television and gaming just comes out looking frankly retarded.

People don't expect a story from a board game like Monopoly or Risk, so why should they expect one from electronic games?

Same reason we come to expect more from games as generations go by; the bar gets raised, met, overcome, and reset.

Given that we've gotten from Pong to here, I would say there's a a lot of progress that has been made, and to argue that we're anywhere near "done" is silly.

That doesn't answer the question of why we expect a story.

Awesome, but bah @ 1/2 hour. I assumed Levine wouldn't be a tangent kind of guy.
