You will never see a PS2 scenario ever again. Sorry. Don't get your hopes up.

Sure, but it certainly puts all the "well WiiU doesn't sell because console gaming is dying" nonsense to a final rest.
I don't know if we will ever be rid of those people. There was a guy insisting console gaming was dead when PS4 preorder numbers were rolling in. The unprecedented demand was pointed out to him, but he just kept repeating, "You wait and see!" These are tough times for many.
I get the feeling Sony wants to try and steal some of Nintendo's magic (not that they can just that they want to)
Games like puppeteer and tearaway. Future games like Rime
I think Sony is trying but they're in some odd middle ground between nintendo and MS
They value quality IP but are still risk-averse like most large publishers although not as badly as 3rd party pubs or imo as MS seems to be

Don't you know? It's edumacation.Jesus Christ...I....I just can't....dat American education system.
That's your opinion, not a fact. The fact is that Nintendo is pushing the assymetrical gameplay factor since the GC era, when they attached a GBA to a GC and made some games that were playable in ways that weren't possible.I think you're using the term "innovation" a tad too loosely. The Wii U's gamepad is anything but. It's a rather obvious move that comes from seeing multi-touch smartphones and tablets taking over. Except in the Wii U's case, the gamepad isn't even multi-touch, and uses an ugly, low-res TN display because Nintendo was trying to churn it out as cheaply as possible.
As it is, the actual application of the gamepad to significantly improve gameplay has been an exceedingly rare occurrence on the Wii U. Look no further than Nintendo's new flagship title to see that.
Wait for the post Christmas WiiU firesale. It will sell at £99 with a game bundled easily. £199 is too much for only 1st party games.
This isn't like some new thing for Sony.
Just a few off the top of my head that appeals to that same audience. Sly, Ratchet, Ico, SoTC, LBP, Jak and Demon's Souls. Your post makes it sound like Sony is just now reaching out to another demographic.
Sure they are risk-averse but then again we have a new Ratchet game just recently (and it's fucking gorgeous), Sly earlier this year as well (another amazing game) as well as Tearaway. I also get the feeling that Sony is the least risk-averse pub in the industry when it comes to new IPs. I haven't see any other pub that has such a steady stream of new IPs throughout the last gen.
But did prince William get one?

Yeah, but the thread is more about the complete success of the PS4, and the real story here is about how well received that console is. Not to say Wii U isn't a complete failure in almost every sense of the word, but we knew that already, it didn't take PS4 completely obliterating it to know that.
Sure, but it certainly puts all the "well WiiU doesn't sell because console gaming is dying" nonsense to a final rest.
But even if this was only a "let's imitate the tablets" thing (it isn't), it's undeniable that this gamepad offers tons of gameplay possibilities not possible on other console pads.
UK is probably the biggest market for gaming in Europe, with Germany being a close second.
I wonder what kind of overall numbers we're looking at.
Maybe 500k first day?
1m in two weeks?
Are you sure his name wasn't goomba?

I still can't see your point of them copying something that they haven't copied. I mean, as you say, the touchpad isn't even multi-touch (and this is fine because those screens aren't nearly as precise as the one used on the WiiU), and since the console is sold at lost, then in no way they cheapened out as much as you insinuate.
Look, what Nintendo has been trying to do with the WiiU, and it's pretty clear from playing Nintendoland, HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH COPYING THE MOBILE MARKETS.
This is something this company it's working on since tons of years, but we've reached a point where it was technologically possible for them to implement it with the hardware.
But even if this was only a "let's imitate the tablets" thing (it isn't), it's undeniable that this gamepad offers tons of gameplay possibilities not possible on other console pads.
As a reward for the developers? Yes, absolutely. But Nintendo as a publisher simply doesn't deserve good sales. Not with how they basically put their hands in their pockets, doing nothing for over 2 years.
It's sad that good games don't sell, but it's a simple reality that with how Nintendo has conducted it's home console business that they simply don't deserve success, no matter how good their games are. Quality of a product is just half the battle. It is almost insulting to the developers, how incompetent, lazy and complacent Nintendo has acted both as a platform holder and publisher.
Oh stop the melodrama. Really. I'm an avid player, and a huge Nintendo fan. Currently enjoying the hell out of ALBW and clocking in at 260 hours of ACNL as well as WiiFit, Wii Sports Club and Wii Party U.
But despite enjoying the console and it's games, I find it irresponsible to not hold Nintendo accountable for their fuck ups. I buy their games because I want them, but they honestly believed, that they'd have enough people like me left to have a successful console.
That much idiocy and hubris deserves a response from the market and thankfully it's been delivered, and plentiful.
Like I said, it can only get better from here... assuming Iwata actually implements some of the lessons learned from this disaster for once instead of just endlessly apologizing and repeat "please understand" ad nauseam.
noobasuar, Taurus, plenty of names you can easily sub in there.
The first has me scratching my head. So... a tablet like device used as the main control input and a major selling point being off-TV play is not influenced by the trends in the mobile market?
I love a good meltdown thread. We've got salt, we've got GIFs, it's all I need.
It feels like it's been a while since we've had a thread like this, even though the last one was probably Resolutiongate two weeks ago.
Here's to the dozens more to come!

I'd say the touchscreen controller is more Nintendo going bankrupt on new ideas and just trying to shove the success of the DS platforms onto their home system than really following mobile trends.

Thunder Monkey isn't some fanboy that has his hopes up over a PS2 scenario. He's just making an honest prediction based on early sales.
I mostly agree with him, but I still believe MS will take US.
Fuck spending $400+ on new machines, some of the best entertainment of the year comes entirely free.
I see The Seth got a new account finally. If you're feeling sorry for me, I feel bad for you son, I got 99 problems but games ain't one.
I got Bayonetta on stack fa sho
Mario Kart gonna come out and ya’ll’s mouths’ll close
Game critics say U’s has no game is gettin old
I’m a gamer stupid what type of facts is those
You sir, have given me the biggest laugh of the day, thank you.
Do you think so? In that tiny screen it has? How?The DS4 would do a pretty damn good job emulating Nintendo's touchscreen.
What has "off-tv" to do with the mobile market? And the controller has buttons, joystics, a resistive screen.... what has that to do with the tablets?Nags said:The first has me scratching my head. A launch game like ZombiU wouldn't be possible without that controller. At least as it is now.Nags said:The 2nd only really speaks of the potential and not the reality. Even first party titles that are released are having a hard time making compelling experiences with the game tablet's unique feature set.
Yes, this is why they launched Zelda 4 swords and co-developed FF:CC, because they were running out of ideas and had to copy the DS idea with the GBA and the GC and... oh wait!Finalizer said:I'd say the touchscreen controller is more Nintendo going bankrupt on new ideas and just trying to shove the success of the DS platforms onto their home system than really following mobile trends.
I do find it sad though people celebrating Knack doing better than mario. Knack is a shit game.
3D Worlds sales are limits by the console it is on.I'm conflicted. While the Wii U deserves to fail, Mario 3D World certainly does not.
If you own a Wii U, just enjoy it. I probably played more 3D World than I did my PS4 when I got it because it is the better game for me compared to Knack (which is also great, just in a different way), but the console is going to get spanked in sales. Just accept the fact we bought another Dreamcast and realise that's not a bad thing.
Nintendo & Sega (when they were making consoles) in panic mode is a glorious thing and we will get a fuckton of fantastic games out of it. Don't worry about what other people are buying, Nintendo will support it until the bitter end and you will have fun. Just be thankful the console industry in the UK isn't completely dead and move on.
Sony has done an absolute masterful job and has learned so much from their mistakes with the PS3.
Absolutely. They saw that the core gamer was needed at the start and went all in to make that happen. From the hardware, price, messaging, yoshida engaging gamers, everything. And the also catered to their third party partners.
It's nice to see Nintendo getting a schooling on how to treat your loyal, dedicated consumers.
