Man, this is why I don't really like PC MMOs. There's so much shit on the screen, this is the best i was able to do to clean up the UI.

I think I need to clone your hud config, much better than what I could come up with.

Gunner is one of the funnest classes I've ever played in an mmo. Never thought I'd enjoy it more than a class like Slayer, which I would generally play.

So my parents decided to play this game to have a replacement for World of Warcraft. However, there's a problem: they can't see each other, even though they're in the same spot on the same server, and can see each other on the minimap. They asked me to join to try it out, and I can't see my mom's character either. Not even a name plate. What gives?

There are different channels (it shows at the minimap), different phases of the same area on the same realm.

For certain Elin haters in this thread :3

Source: http://www.inven.co.kr/webzine/news/?news=132811&site=tera

Pretty interesting article that I wanted to share. This is from a presentation by Bluehole Studio's former producer, Kim Nak Heong, regarding his experience with the development of the game.

I'll just translate the first part: (Though I will cut out some of the uninteresting bits)

1. Success can happen in unexpected places

Yx2hrE1.jpg

We honestly didn't expect Elins to be this popular. At first, we focused mostly on Castanics. Because we were targeting the global audience, we needed something that would be appealing in the overseas. So from the developer's perspective, Castanics were fitting for that role. This is why Castanics were used as the main focus for advertising in the first few trailers.

But Elins took the spotlight instead. They ended up gathering popularity in not only in Korea, but also in other countries as well. Originally, Elins were meant to be just a filler race. We already had the muscular type, sexy type, giant type, so we thought we should include a cute girl type as well. And because of this, development priority for Elins was actually pretty low.

In fact, Elins weren't supposed to be its own separate race. It was just a female Popori. We only changed it two months before the release of the game- When we received feedback from those in North America, they were asking "How do these guys reproduce?" They didn't really understand how animal-like Popori and human-like Elins could mate. We didn't really think this through either. So ultimately, we decided to separate Elins from Poporis in the race selection screen. Even the name "Elin" was decided during that time. They were just going to be female Poporis.

We focused greatly on the Japanese market, so we released the game there 6 months after the release in Korea. But not long after, playerbase quickly diminished. So we decided to focus on the North American market instead, and focus less on the Japanese market. It was a strategic retreat.

We didn't really pay much attention to feedback from the Japanese market afterwards, but one day, their localization team made a strange request: "Please make a school swimming suit costume for Elins." From the concept art image they provided us, we thought it wouldn't take much effort to make, so we just made it quickly for them. But we didn't expect this to be such a big hit. Although we just made the costume half-heartedly, the profit we made from this costume alone exceeded all the profit we made from all the swimming costumes for all races in Korea.

h5cxs2p.jpg

After that, making costumes was a simple task- They say school swimming suits, bloomers, and maid outfits are the 3 wonders in Japan. Maid costume was especially a big hit. Due to all the profit from Elin costumes, we were able to transition Tera into Free-to-Play format smoothly.

Tera's release in North America was a bit complicated. Month before Tera's release in NA was Diablo 3, and month after was Guild War 2. Because of the competition, we shifted our focus to the Chinese market, because Free-to-Play games were very popular in China. But after some time had passed, Tera ended up doing best in North America compared to in other countries.

What's important is never giving up. If we didn't bother with Elin school swimsuits because Tera was unpopular in Japan back then, Tera right now would be in a completely different state.

tl;dr: Elin saved Tera

http://tera-forums.enmasse.com/forums/general-discussion/topics/BHS-Elin-saved-Tera

What? I'm surprised that they didn't even think about school swimsuit back then and had to wait until the localization team asked for it.

How to make money in Japan 101: moe loli + school swimsuit = profit
add stocking option and then watch the sales increase tenfolds

What? I'm surprised that they didn't even think about school swimsuit back then and had to wait until the localization team asked for it.

They are Korean, not Japanese. How would they know unless they specifically researched that kind of stuff?

Whether or not they should have done that kind of research ... is another story.

tl;dr pedo saved tera

Other successful MMOs dont seem to need to pander to the lowest denominator. I'm sure there are sexy outfits on WoW and FF but TERA takes sexualised pandering to a whole other level of skeeve.

Elins were meant to be cute, and had it been successful in that, I wouldn't consider them so gross. But as long as the Elin gamers keep skewing the vibes for sexualisation of children-looking characters as in declarations of "sexiest elin NA" or panty shot pics or the infamous Elin nude mods whose pussies are based off porn models...........well, why dont we just admit that Elins are full with pedo-problematic undertones.

Also, yes, Gunners are imba like fuck. I've just geared mine to ambit +12 weapon and everything just dies :x.

This is beautiful and amusing at the same time.

Never give up!

What is exactly the kind of people you hang around with? Jesus.

I have the unfortunate misfortune of being stalked by one of the elin nude modders :(

Met him in game and to his 'credits' (for lack of better words) he doesn't know I'm a girl... So he's a bit liberated with his creepiness.

I don't really advertise I'm a girl in-game... To avoid weird dramas. But I guess it has its drawbacks too. Like being subjected to real and honest skeevy weirdos.

How's the current state of the game?

I played up until 20 or so in 2013 and enjoyed the game but never kept playing it.

I'm tempted to jump back in.

Funny, i know a lot of girls in TR. They think I'm a girl irl until i remind them that i never said i was a girl, they just assumed it.

But then again, I don't like nude mods either.

What kind of microtransactions are in the game?

Cosmetic items pretty much, but people buy them and list them in the broker too, so you can buy them with in game gold.

Hmm, so I heard there is a leveling event going. I stopped playing a while ago and Gunner sounds really cool. I need to hit 80 in DFO (76 on FBrawler) but how hard is it to get to 65 with the event and leveling changes. Just wonder if I can hit it before the event ends.

It lasts until June 2. You can do it by then. Should take like 30 hours if you use the XP boosts.

Any tips on what "starter" armor I should pickup on level 60 for a Gunner, and what to go for after that?

I know i bought some very cheap 60 armor on my Sorc (Bloodmark Robe, Cadaverous Fingers, Sullied Shoes), and then went Balders Temple for Oculus.

What is the thing to do nowdays?

Lv 60? Head to Velika outskirts. Get the Vanguard gear from the quests that you get there.

Yeah, like neoak said, start the level 60 quests and get the Initia set for level 60, then the Emina set at 62, enchant those to +9 until you finish all the quests at level 65 when they will mail you the Idoneal set for free... :D

Neoak, you're probably the exception ( in my unfortunate experience) ... I know a few Elin girls too and they are okay 👌 but yeah... Got to know a number of icky fellows and tainted the Elin male gamers for me. Wish I didn't have this experience but well there it is.

You really got a bad experience. I mean, we can joke about fluffy tails and what not, but they go waaaaay too far.

Yep. These ones even talk about which of their Elin characters are sluttier than others. Super gross. Terrible people. But they are very entrenched and very defensive. I think it's unfortunate that they are also the main cash cows of Tera, tbh. I like cutesy and girly things, being a girl, but the sexual undertones of these Elin pandering really turns me off the race. It's always swimsuit or maid outfits or stuff like that ... Why are they obsessed with dressing children looking characters in swim suits or make them into maids and stuff. I just don't get it. It's ' cute ' is only believable yup to a certain point, tbh. But if you know the majority of these Elin male gamers... One finds it hard not to doubt.

Ahh well... Bad experience is par the course of mmo population. It doesn't stop me from enjoying the combat system :D

Man I really like this game. Keeps pulling me away from Witcher 3.

I do have a question tho, BAMs are just big monsters right? Is there a way to identify them? A mark of some kind?

I've just kind of been playing the game, doing quests, but haven't really researched a ton of stuff yet. I went gung-ho on FF14 and looked up everything and it ended turning the game into a job I felt like. With Tera I'm just having fun and playing at my own pace.

Maybe it's the real time combat, but I feel my skill as a player has more to do with the outcome of battles than in other mmos. Which makes it fun to just play and not go crazy about gear and minmaxing.

Also, do mounts ever go on sale? Was looking at the okami mounts and it would be like $40 for an account mount... Is that correct? Seems crazy to me for just a mount.

Finally, for those of you with elite status, how do you like it? Is it worth it? Also, (sorry) what does "founder" mean? I see this title on some people.

Damn. But then again, you rolled on the PvP server. The assholes in TR end up transferring to MT because people get tired of their BS and "tough boy" attitude.

They nerfed the shit out of them. Before, it was very hard to solo them. Now they are just Big monsters. They may have a skull next to their name.

Yes, they do have sales every now and then. Rare though. Account mounts are that price, yes.

I have Elite and have had it when i play. I pay 10/mo because of a promotion they ran at the start of this year. The village atlas and the teleport book are worth it to me due to the convenience compared to when the game was P2P.

As for founder, see:

Sabex Armory 5man version soloed, OMG its beginning to be difficult... Maybe.

BTW, that Idoneal SET you get at 65, I've been hearing that it has some crazy pre-requisite to be getting it, like Sabex Armory, and M<something> Catacombs.

Anyone know the fact, and/or can i hit 65, and go back and do the pre-requisites after the fact and get it, or do I have to make them first?

Nopren

You can go back and do Sabex Armory and Macalarios Catacombs after hitting level 65.

The prerequisite for getting the Idoneal set is hitting level 65, beat SA and MC, complete 20 Vanguard Initiative orders and completing the storyline with Polyn/Zaelyn. It doesn't matter when or in what order you do them.

Unless they changed it in the last few months, you do not have to do SA/MC to get the Idoneal set. When I went through it on reaper about 3 months ago, all I did was everything but the dungeons and I was still able to get the set after finishing the story quests at 65. You do still get rewards for finishing both of them your first time, just they are not required for the set.

I guess they have changed that then. I had to run those dungeons for my gear.
So yeah just story and 20 vanguard orders for the gear.

You get the weapon and jewelries after Sabex and quests completion. You get the armour, gloves and boots after Macellarius Catacombs.

They separated it into two lots. It was a weird change for me too, but I just did it recently with my gunner.

Mithos, Sabex shouldn't be too much of a challenge if you are level 62 and above and you've enchanted your Emina gear to +9. Macellarius is a bit tougher, but I've found that maybe it's only the first boss that's giving people some grief. When this boss target a specific player, remember to knockdown/stun/sleep/cc it, then it shouldn't be too much of a problem. Also make sure if your group is still pre-Idoneal set to stress NOT to pull too many mobs at once during corridor fights. They hit pretty hard for pre-Idoneal gear.

Neoak, whachu talkin about~ I'm on TR. I've always been on TR :D

Prototype, Im Elite and I'm like Neoak, I got the $10 / month, and so far it's worth it. I likey the travel journal and whatnot. Very convenient. And more dungeon entries :D

I found both Sabex and Macellarius weren't that hard. Actually the only issue I had with them was waiting for party lol. Still remember that 2 hours waiting in queue...

yeah, they are both easy, but i guess for newcomers things can be a bit overwhelming. i ran both with some noobs that were blind to things that could make their lives easier for them.

:O

Not much of jew content, but loads of new contents to do, yep :D

Bloody autocorrect. >.<

Thanks. :p

A couple of questions nonetheless;

1. How's the new classes? Is reaper still Elin only?

2. How's the levelling curve? If I came back I'd want to start from level one because it's been a few years and I need to relearn everything. Can you dungeon your way to the top?

3. I played tank, how do they faire these days? I remember there being a huge difficulty in trying to do damage as a lancer.

I ended up short on hitting 65 by quite alot after finishing the 60-65 storyquests, landed on 64 and 25%.

I know dungeons etc etc, but any other ways to level "fast enough" to not miss June 2nd for 65?
