Why does Portable Ops need to be referenced? Nothing major happened in the game. Ocelot/Zero stole the Philosophers' Legacy to fund the Patriots. Gene gave BB a chunk of money and that's what i assumed he used in order to do his own thing. Other than that there's nothing to talk about. Simple side story with a few easter eggs.

If that is the SOCOM pistol then it's interesting as that particular pistol didn't enter service until 1996 and is still in service today

Now I know it could be Kojima craziness but he's always tried to be somewhat accurate in his gunporn. At the very least in the descriptions.

Yeah I don't think it would be a SOCOM.

Could be something like this custom Springfield Operator.

Doesn't "need". It would just tie in with the character's story.

Steve, the dog with no powers that we let hang out with us all for some reason
But.. that is not a reference to Portable Ops.

What does reference, then?

It established that Big Boss' idea of Outer Heaven was influenced from Gene's master plan along with The Boss' legacy to create a military-driven country that would disrupt the world from the Philosophers' control, to which he even replies "The place soldiers are looking for is outside your heaven!". Then you got Big Boss in MG1 doing the same thing he prevented...

I'd say that's pretty significant.

Before Portable Ops, our idea of who the Patriots were, and the details of their ultimate goal, were entirely different. Big Boss and Friends being the founding members? Fulfilling the Boss' dream of a unified world? Zero as some kind of shadowy mastermind? Those revelations changed literally everything.

Which really baffles my mind why it hasn't been included on any other platform that the PSP. Kojima mentions it's a side story like it's no big deal, but unless Ground Zeroes/5 override it, this part of the story really should be made playable to a wider audience.

That's actually a pretty big part lol. Also Gray Fox made his first appearance timeline wise.

I saw a neat theory over at Giant Bomb's comments on the trailer which suggested that "V" might be one of many code names for Big Boss clones. Which is why the nurse would say "V has come to".

Well there was 7 clones or 9. I don't know anymore fucking Kojima and his hackness.

Solid and Liquid were part of the initial batch while the greatest Snake Solidus was/is perfect.

Or V stands for Vita which means life lol.

Sorry i think that came out the wrong way. Portable Ops has a big place in the history. What i meant was i don't think Kojima did any kind of retcon in MGS4 or PW towards PO. A lot of you guys are saying Kojima seems to be ignoring the events in PO acting as if the game doesn't exist. I just dont why you guys feel that way.

I just played MGS 1 and Liquid said there were 8 and 6 were intentionally aborted. 9 if you include Solidus, which he wasn't. But then he considered also the Genome Soldiers to be brothers of theirs, so who knows.

It's been a while since I played MGS, but IIRC they were aborted in the womb so that Solid and Liquid would get stronger - or something to that effect.

I think MGS2 said that Solidus had his ageing process sped up so he could become identical to Big Boss sooner. If this is correct, then for all we know this mysterious bandaged dude could be Solidus.

Those revelations literally happen entirely in a post credits phone conversation though. The rest of the game doesn't really give any deeper insight.

Exactly. The whole game was just fluff with some cool things here and there. None of the important big stuff has been retconned (yet).

PW ignored a fuck load of important events not just PO. You would think at least once BB would talk bout Zero being a asshole or how pissed off he was about the clones. All he cared about was that damn Boss robot.

Is there a source for this? Would like to read about it as I've not heard that before.

There were only three clones. In the original MGS, Liquid tells Snake that they were originally octoplets, but the other six clones were aborted to make the fetal growth that much stronger for him and Solid. He referred to the process as the "super baby method".

Solidus came after that and, as far as we know, he was the only one to have come out of his mother's vagina alive.

I really hope Kojima doesn't retcon history as Big Boss having even more clones. That would just be lame.

There is nothing concrete which can be used to answer your question, but the popular opinion seems to be that Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain are two sides of the same coin (MGSV/5).

I'm thinking MGS V: Ground Zeroes.

Phantom Pain is MGS V pretending to be a trailer for a new ip, there was a tweet a few months ago where he wanted to make a game about surviving some mysterious invasion, or The Mist, so maybe that's what this is about.

Could the game feature the opening Peace Walker epilogue mission in Cuba, coma inducing cutscene about losing an arm and ending up in Cyprus somehow, Phantom Pain escape sequence, followed by somehow getting a new arm sewed back on in the space of the first hour? I don't know how, but if so, that'll be the intro.

As I heard in Metal Gear Rising ZOEHD demo if you cut the left arm of the enemies you can get from them upgrades for abilities or something similar.

Maybe here they cutted Big Boss' arm to get his skills for the clones using a less advanced tech?

This can be a hint from Kojima to his fans who bought ZOEHD.

I thought he meant their first "base" that little shack in the intro, where they met Paz and Zadornov. Kaz wasn't in the MPO, so why would he refer to it?

No. The Portable Ops events took place in San Hieronymo. That's what Big Boss was talking about; leaving "all that shit" behind. That was a clear "breaking the fourth-wall" statement to me, from Kojima, basically confirming that he is far from a fan of PO.

So they actually stuck all 8 or 9 of them in to one womb??

I thought the speeding up was simply because he was the perfect clone? Or maybe you're right and it was sped up so he could take office at the right time.

Also bandaged guy is the 2nd gen. Johnny, I thought?

Don't know if this was already posted and we all know it anyway but on this weeks episode of IW, Shane Satterfield says he knows for a fact this game is a metal gear game.

http://www.gametrailers.com/full-episodes/fk1zm2/invisible-walls-episode-237--mayan-doomsday-2012 (29 min mark)

Haha Shane dropping the "insider knowledge".

Meanwhile on DetectiveGAF we've found the hidden title text, matched all the character references, figured out the scene location, matched the game to the MGS timeline and re-edited the trailer into chronological order.

This thread is like a daily soap opera unfolding awesomeness.

So when is the next Famitsu releasing so we can get more info?

Ok someone pointed this

MRknl.jpg

as RPG but honestly to me looks like this

Flamethrower.

So in my opionion is not that the kid (young Psyco Manthis or whatever he/she is) is helping our two guys to escape is more that the soliders are using it. Then my idea is that they took it because they knew they might have to deal with something more than just some injuried guy in the hospital. C'mon you just have to arrive to an hospital and kill everyone, do you really need that kind of weapon?

So anyway this also lead to this scene

My two cents. I know is still a long road to be promoted Detective :))

Yeah, that's what I thought was the case.

Also, yes it would be lame if they make something up about multiple clones.

OK guys I'm not English mother language but why everyone seems so sure she says "V has come to" and not "V has come TOO" ? And why we're so inclined to think is the nurse speaking? Can be some other female character waiting fore some guy code named V....

Ok Guys,

I'm making some good progress with the video but the Laptop I'm using is phantom painfully slow. I've made quite a few observations which are quite interesting. Hopefully I can post the video up today.

But... I am beginning to feel the trailer is actually from two different sections of the game. Lending to a theory that this is perhaps a recurring state for Big Boss. I have been going frame by frame with the trailer and noticed several things.

For example did anyone spot people who look like the Nurse and the bald Doctor in the same scene where everyone gets shot in the corridor? The bald man is incredibly tall. I certainly believe this is the most out of place scene in the trailer due to how everyone is lined up in a calm manner whereas the rest of the trailer has Big Boss and friend being stealthy. It's been really hard to place this section with the rest of the trailer as the continuity is all wrong. I still believe there's a big clue with the ECG Monitor and ventilator sound effects when the doctor speaks (you don't even see the character), then it cuts to Big Boss, simply lying on the floor looking at the prosthetic arm - how odd.

What's also really odd is the helper. "On your feet soldier, the whole place is coming down" - you see him aid Big Boss supposedly to his feet, then the next scene Boss is still on the floor.
What's more odd is how BB uses the trolley to rise, but all the contents crash to the floor - notice how the helper makes no attempt to acknowledge this at all - imagine how loud the sound of crashing metal on the solid floor would sound - enough at least for the helper to look back, but no. Nothing. This lends to the theory that the helper is a PHANTOM or a figment of BB's imagination, a metaphor for him getting on his feet and escaping. A vision of his former self because BBoss acts like a rookie. However, we see him driving the ambulance which doesn't fit the theory unless it is a dream or two sections of the story.

Did anyone notice that the flaming horse is a winged unicorn? (I assume so as it's pretty obvious). Does it have a name - Pegasus perhaps?

But having dug around, there's this debatable area around the SNATCHER project where BB is actually turned into a cyborg. There's lots of details surrounding that including:

The Outer Heaven showdown, three years ago... His arms, legs, right eye, and right ear, they were all gone. He was barely alive at all. Then a tyrant of the East became interested in him... Petrovich Madnar was ordered to accelerate his Snatcher plan. It was tested on the body of Big Boss with success. Now part of him is human and part is not.

The Metal Gear Solid 4 Database's encyclopedia pretty much confirms that Big Boss was resurrected from Outer Heaven due to the Snatcher Project.

Convo with Kasler.

Kasler: Big Boss...
Kasler: There's not a mercenary in the world who hasn't heard of him. He's a like a god, a living legend.
Snake: I already know all that! I need new information!
Kasler: OK, OK... but this is only a rumor, understand? Three years ago, when Outer Heaven fell, Big Boss was seriously wounded. He almost died...
Kasler: He lost both hands, both feet, his right eye, and his right ear. But somehow... he survived.
Kasler: Then an Eastern bloc despot took an interest in him. Probably couldn't resist getting his hands on a soldier of Big Boss's caliber.
Kasler: They decided to use Big Boss as a guinea pig in Madnar's Snatcher project.
Kasler: I don't know the details, but apparently it involved turning him into a cyborg. Now he's half man and half machine. Hard to believe, I know.
Kasler: But if it's true, Snake, you're way out of your league. None of your techniques is going to so much as put a scratch on him.
Kasler: Snake... give it up...There's no way you can win this time...Over and out.

Going back to my OBE - Out of Body experience theory.

Joakim Mogren - Moby Dick Studios. Hideo Kojima and staff having an OBE as a new person, new studio? A little bit of humor from the team?

The part with the doctor talking is in daylight, you can see the shadow of the ceiling fan and shadows on the far wall coming from the left. All the other scenes are from night time.

Do we know who is the composer of the music of this trailer? Is the same of Ground Zer ?
This doesn't sound very HGW....

Parts sound similar to what we heard from Ludvig Forssell in the trailer for Ground Zeroes so I think it's the same guy.

This is practically tradition. After all, the whole foundation of the franchise is in two MSX games.
