Aonuma: Zelda Wii U Trailer Wasn’t Just In-Engine, It was Actually Gameplay

I presumed it was in-game, and was stunned when I saw the trailer. Had some doubts after watching it a few more times, but am happy to hear it was made with the in-game engine.

Looks amazing. The art style is just gorgeous.

Destructible environments. A cloak item that prevents environmental damage. Not necessarily impossible, LOL.

Destructible environments are certainly possible for this Zelda game but if you honestly believe that bridge destruction, cloak throwing, and jumping were gameplay with a debug camera then I think you will be disappointed by the final game. The important take away is that everything we saw was in-engine. People are getting to caught up in trying to figure out the gameplay implications of an in-game cut scene.

I hope they incorporate a lot of interesting side quest like Majora's Mask and have vibrant characters with little scripted lives again.

So it wasn't a cutscene? I assumed the beginning when he was standing in the open field that it was gameplay and then it transitioned to a cutscene. But how can it all be gameplay? What about the cloak removal part?

I just checked the Japanese version of the Miiverse post, and it simply says "it's really running on Wii U"; no specification on whether it's just in-engine (i.e. a cutscene) or actual gameplay.

Unlike the english Miiverse post though, he does confirm the game will be playable at next years E3.

Right. How is that possible? You don't even see the supposed player character some of the time, and it's moving toward the camera, without seeing where it's going. Either he meant to say that it was in-game, but at least partially a cutscene, or this is going to be one shoddily designed game.

I wonder if we'll still hear "But but WiiU has weak graphics!" drivel.
Well, it is true that the Wii U isn't capable of the things that the PlayStation 4 and XBOX One are. And that it is more comparable to last generation hardware.

But last generation hardware is still really amazing. And people can do a lot of amazing things with it if they really try.

Yeah. Nintendo releases shoddily designed games all the time.

He was misquoted in OP. He was referring to a promotional CGi movie.

In-engine is a cutscreen while gameplay is player controlled and players POV.

Anyway love the art direction. Looks great.

It could easily be gameplay with altered camera angles.

4k 240 fps

Believe

Didn't they say during ALBW development that 60 fps is very important for 2D Zelda but not so for 3D? I remember something along those lines.

The 60fps on ALBW also had a lot to do with the way you could move things around on the touch screen. 30 looked laggy (like it does on WW HD), and the team didn't like that.

Doesn't read OPs, especially not his own
Again guys, forget the camera placement, just like in SSB reveals where the camera is so close to the fighters unlike real gameplay.
The cameras were preset to demonstrate the content.

What Aonuma means is that's how it looks and runs in-engine and in real-time. That's how Epona/enemies/random animals around react, that's how the environment reacts etc.

Additionaly just take his word. It's not like Nintendo is showing CGI and bullshots and blatantly lies it's gameplay when they reveal games. If anything all the WiiU games so far look and run better than they did on reveal.
Exactly this.

Looked great. Calling it now- no way this is coming out in 2016. Don't Zelda games on console pretty much always get delayed at least a year?

If this is the case, then I feel like this must have been a heavily scripted event within the game.

That being said, it still looks awesome, and I can't wait to see more footage.

Nintendo is pushing games to 60fps. I'd say 720p / 60fps

Yeah like i said in the other thread; Wii U's sweet spot has been 720p 60fps for the majority of its exclusives. Games like Bayo 2 show it can handle that increadibly well under intense scenarios. Since this is a Zelda game I'd expect it to just be reversed at 1080p 30fps. Doesn't seem out of the Wii U's reach imo.

I have a feeling resolution and fps will be something Aonuma reveals soon anyway so we'll see.

Hiromasa Shikata: 60 FPS not necessarily a standard for all future Zelda games.
Hiromasa Shikata (in a Game Informer interview about ALBW being 60FPS): It’s really the concept of the game that changes whether you want to keep the volume of information in the game low and running at 60 frames per second. We kept it at 60 to make the 3D look smooth, allow the players to clearly see enemy movements, and keep everything moving crisply as with previous games. This doesn’t mean that all future Zelda titles will run at 60 frames per second.

Personally i would take 1080p/30fps just because of the ALIASING!

It's all about that second screen technology
