Marvel's Secret Wars Hype Thread - Where we argue about what "reboot" means

We're arguing over semantics here. Past will be undone because WHOLE PARTS of continuity is GOING MISSING. New characters will appear out of nowhere and previous characters will have completely different history in the main Marvel U.

Watch the press again. To me it's clear what they are saying... Every time they mention the changes to the Marvel U they aren't just referencing Secret Wars, they are mentioning everything afterwards too.

But continuity isn't being erased. That is the difference. This is a retooling and not a reboot. Since you know Marvel doesn't do complete reboots like DC does.

Did you know that in a recent Avengers issue
the Earth was destroyed by a Celestial and the next few issues took place in the future? THE OLD MARVEL UNIVERSE WAS DESTROYED!!!!!!
Please understand that even if things are massively changed during this event things can always revert back by the end of the event.
Except they specifically aren't referencing ONLY this event when they say they are mixing and matching parts of other universes with the mainstream universe.

Why would they release brand new ongoings if it was a full reboot?
You think Marvel can't/won't issue another brand new #1 once the event is over? You underestimate their business tenacity.

I'll call this a reboot and you can call this retooling. Again, semantics. It's not a Crisis on Infinite Earth reboot, but it's a New 52 reboot/retooling/whatever you call it.

wolverine is dead, but his story is still going. he has a team named after him after all.

That's actually the thing I love most about Marvel. Sometimes they just don't give a fuck. Captain America dies, the storyline in the book continues for a whole year before someone else even becomes a new Captain America, and then it continues for another 2 years after that before Steve Rogers returns.

Why would they release brand new ongoings if it was a full reboot?

DC launched Red Lanterns, a new Justice League International spinning out of Brightest Day, and modified several other #1s to fit the new continuity when they rebooted. They even allowed Morrison's Batman and Geoff Johns's Green Lantern runs to continue even though everything else was rebooted holesale. The big 2 can't seem to reboot properly. Valiant did it right by starting the whole universe over from scratch but I think Marvel and DC feel they can have their cake and eat it too by doing the ol' "soft" reboot routine.

No matter what happens, I'm fairly hype. I read the original Secret Wars back in the 80s and it was fun enough. Can't wait to see what they do here.

The only thing I don't think Marvel is doing well is communicating what comics to buy to lead up. Is it just Avengers/New Avengers? Nothing else? They need to drop a list/timeline.

Main stuff is just Avengers/New Avengers. Might want to read the older stuff Hickman has written too, like Secret Warriors, SHIELD, and his Fantastic Four run. He loves playing the "connect everything" narrative game towards the end of his storylines.

... can someone explain what was announced ?

Did marvel announced his New 52 or something ?

Basically, yes. They're applying their own spin on what DC editorial attempted with their Nu52. The difference being they saw what didn't work, and are attempting to avoid the same pitfalls with tweaks on the overall strategy.

People are mostly arguing over the somewhat fluid definition of "reboot" as it pertains to fictional universes now. But the basic gist of what's going down can probably be distilled into "Marvel's New 616" as a descriptor and be, more or less, accurate.

Got me thinking, who will be Marvel's Cyborg, post Secret Wars? You know the dude that is suddenly big leagues.

It's the Arabian Knight's time

Doctor Strange and Black Panther have movies in the next two years, so those would be two of my bets. Clearly they also have plans to push Miles, but I am not sure how well he will take in the long run. Derivative characters have the deck stacked against them. Maybe he'll be a War Machine or a Ms Marvel, but most of them end up getting offed in the first issue of some crossover or new creator arc when their creators leave the company.

More like replacing bits and pieces of the Marvel Universe with bits and pieces of the Ultimate Universe and other alternate realities.
Have you read Ultimate Marvel lately?

So what I hearing is The Fantastic Force is coming back.

best seen in the classic "Shadow of the Beast"

Black Panther has a good shot. Huge character with a huge role in the current events, hasn't really had his own defining book in forever. Going to be really familiar to general audiences starting from next year too, thanks to the Civil War movie.

But would Bendis ever leave?

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

Is Hudlin available?

Probably not willingly. But the comic industry hasn't had the best record with their senior creators (even ones that were widely popular/influential) and Bendis is in his late 40s. I don't think he is going anywhere in the immediate future, but how much sway will he have 15 years from now?

I think Bendis is fine as long as he never decides to jump into editorial. As a writer there's always going to be work, and he's been working with Marvel for so long that I don't ever foresee him not being to find something to write. Once you get into office politics, that becomes more volatile.

Most of the other popular and influential writers over the years simply don't want to stay exclusively at Marvel. It's not that they get kicked off, they just have better things they could do - like create their own series at Image and own the rights.

So I've been putting this off for a while but I guess it's necessary now.

Never really followed the Ultimate Spider-man series despite knowing they're good. What are the essentials leading up to now? I want to experience Peter to Miles to today before this event happens.

From newsarama:

"Marvel seems reluctant to use words such as “reset” or “reboot,” though Marvel Senior VP of Publishing Tom Brevoort says that “The Marvel Universe as you know it is done.” The language seems in conflict, just as Conway feel some fans may feel internally."
