Homeworld Remastered |OT| All of this has happened before and will happen again

I just want to give a shoutout to the excellent 70's/80's sci-fi artists that inspired Homeworld back in the day, notably Peter Elson and Chris Foss. If you're into the visual direction of Homeworld, check out people like the late Peter Elson's website, which is run by his sister (and you can order prints from there), Chris Foss' Hardware art book, Chris Moore, Philippe Bouchet, and perhaps many other. Here's what I'm talking about:

It was also interesting to read that Relic originally wanted Peter Elson to design the box cover of Homeworld 1, but Sierra wanted a 3D cover:

The look of the PC game Homeworld was heavily influenced by Elson's illustrations of the '70s and '80s, according to artists who worked on the title (he is listed in the Special Thanks section of the game's manual and has a character, Captain Elson, named after him). Elson was originally slated to create the game's box art, but at the last moment was pre-empted by the publisher's decision to use a 3D rendered scene.

Additionally, in case you didn't already know, one of the characters in the game is called Captain Elson after him. He passed away during the development of Homeworld, a bit after the lead artists had a chance to meet him in the UK. This is also a really interesting read.

Time warp!

Was doing a web search for Peter's stuff, and this thread popped up. I know it's years late, but I thought I'd add what I know anyhow.

Disclaimer - this turned out to be more of a biography than I intended. Elson was a big influence on me, and I've felt for a long time that a) he deserved to be better known and b) the man deserves some kind of biography. Nobody else seems to be about the job, so I've decided to do my best. All of you hotshot concept guys (and gals) might find in it a sort of cautionary tale, maybe. This is as good a repository for said biography as any other, i guess, so here goes:

Peter Elson was a British sci fi artist who did book covers from ~1975 up until his death in 1998. His output peaked in the late 70's. After the recession hit England in the early 80's, the sci-fi publishing industry suffered and work dried up. He did backdrop paintings for theater productions and amusement park rides in between occasional cover stints - he only got one or two covers a year in the late nineties. Despite being insanely talented, he never shopped his skills around. He never seems to have done any production design for film and TV, and he never adapted to computer graphics.

In the 1970's, UK artist Chriss Foss pioneered a distinctive style of cover illustration - a large, colorful spaceship against a vividly colored airbrushed background. His style was massively successful, and it seems that demand for this style of work outstripped supply. Many prominent UK sci-fi illustrators of the time got their start banging out Foss knock-offs. Peter Elson was among them. But he soon surpassed Foss in almost every way. His handling of so called 'gadget' covers is second to none. He also developed a distinctive detailing style that remains fresh even now, thirty years later.

Why isn't Elson better known? I think I know a few reasons. I met him in 1997, and spent the day with him in his 'studio', asking him about his technique. His studio was his bedroom in a Colchester flat he shared with his brother, in what American's would call "the Projects".

Firstly, Elson was not very versatile. He admitted himself that he sucked at doing people. Not only did the publishing industry in England suffer a sort of collapse in the 80's, but when it revived, tastes had changed. Gadget covers were out, and people were in. Elson simply didn't adapt.

Secondly, he was strictly an illustrator and not a designer. He did 'design' all the vehicles he put in his illustrations, but he only designed them for the sake of the illustration, and only in the POV of the illo itself. I asked him to show me how he designed his ships. He just shrugged, and said he did whatever worked fo the sake of the cover. He did no development sketches. He didn't explore shapes and lines. He had no design process whatsoever. A couple of roughs then bang, out with the final cover. In short, he wasn't a concept designer at heart. A genius of a sort, but not a concept designer. So he never did much (any?) work for film, TV or games that I know of. just book covers and theater backdrops.

Thirdly, he seemed painfully shy. I only met him once, and I talked to him by phone from time to time. I can't claim to have known him. But I did observe that he seemed to be shy and reclusive. I certainly wouldn't have described him as 'ambitious' or 'outgoing'. I find it heartbreaking that he could have languished as he did. He could have brushed up on his figure drawing skills. he could have developed his design process. He could have got aboard with the digital tools. In 1983 Dragon's Dream Press published a book called "Parallel Lines" featuring the work of Peter Elson and Chris Moore. Their lines didn't remain parallel for long though - Moore learned digital stuff and his work shows up in current issues of "Spectrum".

I met Elson in the spring of '97. Rob Cunningham and I were about to start designing the spaceships for a game called "Homeworld", so I tracked Elson down to ask for some insights from the master. I arranged to go to Colchester and spend a day with him. I spent the day in his bedroom looking over his giant archive of all the covers he'd ever done. There were hundreds. He showed me a couple of sketches, and some works in progress, and told me a bit about his process. There wasn't much to tell though - he was a sort of idiot savant when it came to designing ships. He just did it, he didn't know how. I got to look at the original artwork for his cover to "Welcome to Mars", known in Great Space Battles as "A mobile monitoring station orbiting mars...". It was small - He said he did his originals at double the size of the published final. "Welcome to Mars" was about 8 1/2 * 11 - for a small paperback edition. He used gouache, small brushes and an airbrush. He sometimes put panel lines in with a ballpoint pen.

I talked to him again in early '98. We were trying to arrange for himn to paint the box cover to our game. The publisher eventually balked - they wanted a render, not a painting. Ironically, we got a-hold of a bootlegged Russian copy of Homeworld that had a John Berkey painting for the cover, and it looked awesome. An Elson would have been better though.

When I saw Elson, he seemed...uh, unwell. Seing as I'm I'm attempting to biograph the man, I might as well be open about this. His nose was a swollen red bulb. He had bags under his eyes you could have carried groceries home in. The ashtray next to his bed was so full of butts it looked like a sculpture of Jabba the Hutt. The sea of beer cans beside the ashtray complete the picture. I know this is more information that anyone here really cares about. But Elson influenced me a lot. I know he was no Van Gogh, but I think he deserves some kind of biography, and an honest one too. I don't know much about him, but I feel I have to give a full account of what I do know, for posterity's sake.

According to his agent, sometime in '98, Elson went to a pub with some friends for an evening of drinking. At last call, the friends got up to leave, but Elson didn't. I think he was born in '46, so he died at the ripe old age of 52.

There you go. A mini bio from a fan. Not that anyone cares. But where else am I going to put it?

ok this is now worth the price, I was expecting the basic soundtrack, I might cave in, are soundtracks in Steam drm free?

Steam usually just downloads a game's soundtracks to the game folder in without any DRM, at least in my experience.

I will have to look into some of those artists and hope they have some artbooks or collections up for order. I remember seeing them somewhere after playing the game and thinking of how similar they looked and it has always been in the back of my mind to research that. It is neat to see where the influence came from plus as a big science fiction junkie growing up I can't pass up the chance to own some stuff like that. And I like to go into "old man Portman" mode and rant about how much better stuff like that artwork was back then compared to now but that's just me. :)

Hey man, it's not old man Portman mode, it's acknowledging that certain older art styles (use of pencils, hand colored shading, spray paint) stand above their perfectly measured digitally-brushed counterparts. I agree.

I love digital art too, both production methods have a place.

The soundtracks are up on Steam. $7.99 each. MP3 and FLAC. Says that they will send out redemption codes to the CE holders over the next few days. Now it makes sense to me why they had us register the CE codes on a website so they could disperse stuff like this.

You were supposed to register your CE code? Where?

Ugh, Sea of Lost Souls is broken for me. I got no cutscene or notification when I approached the Alien ship, I took down 25% of its health and it released all the captured capital ships. When I try and destroy it its health jumps back to 100%. How do you get passed this?

You can't destroy it.

You should have recieved by now the objective of salvaging the ship to retrieve information about it.

Had the same issue during my playthrough. It could be an issue of not firing a trigger for the cinematic. Got it to fire while approaching the ship in the tactical display. Not sure if that helps

I remember back when the original homeworld released that as I played it I kept thinking how something as cool, fresh, detailed, and lovingly-crafted could have been made in the first place.

I would spend hours looking at each ship up close seeing how it behaved, completely mesmerized the first time I saw the turrets turn and track on one of the bigger starting ships. You would see how some shots would land and others not depending on what the target was doing. Eventually you would start developing an instinctive feel for what you could do during a battle with specific enemy types to tip the scales ever so slightly in your favor.
From what I'm reading in the thread, all of this is now gone. Wth changes this significant I believe the developers should have been more respectful of the playerbase and not call it a remaster, but more of a remake or reimagining.
A game is its mechanics.
Changing stuff is not automatically bad, for all I know the remaster could end up being a better game due to the changes; but remembering back when HW2 released how it (while pretty good and fun) felt pretty much uninspired in several regards, I just know that, at least for me, the remaster would be a disappointment were I to play it.

The original homeworld included is pretty much the exact same game as back then (except for the credits song), right?

So, what is the general consensus?

I've never played Homeworld but I absolutely love strategy, sci-fi, and just the overall look and mood of this game ( and the soundtrack ).

Is this another major fuck up by gearbox or is it a good remaster?

Peter Elson did some stuff on Great Space Battles, otherwise the only published book with his artwork is Parallel Lines. His sister Pam has tried pitching an artbook with his stuff, but so far no publishers have been interested.

Chris Foss has a really nice hardcover art book called Hardware. It's really, really great with high quality depiction of his work and well-written text about his artistry and significance. It seems to be really expensive at the moment, but I think a second round of printing soon according to his Facebook.

Presentation-side is really good with a few changes to the original. Great texture & mesh work, very admirable graphical upgrade, superb new sound mixing & quality.

Gameplay-wise there are a lot of bugs and translation loss in HW1 being transferred to the HW2 engine. Lots of stuff in the original has been damaged or changed - formations, game balance, strike crafts being useless, frigate health, battlecruisers and salvage corvettes being OP, AI not being as smart, and much other stuff.

If you're patient, you can wait until they've patched HW1 or some people have created mods for the game.

HW2 is the only unscathed game.

Since you haven't played the original and if you're impatient, you can just go ahead and play it. But be aware that the classic is different in mechanics and gameplay.

It's a VERY good remaster overall. It also includes the original games.

There are a few bugs and tweaks that will hopefully be patched. There are complaints, of course, from some hardcore folks...but the original is still there for them.

I love these games. I bought the CE $100 and I bought the Art Book $60.

I'm not disappointed in either purchase at all. You could buy the 4 copies (2 original and 2 remasters) at their normal price and you should be very happy.

Since you're new, you could play through the originals first...that's up to you of course :).

Yeah, I agree that the love to this series has definitely been shown in the amount of effort and features that Gearbox put into the game. Like I recounted a while back in this thread:

Since the rise of digital distribution around 2005 or 6, I've been clamoring for a digital release of Homeworld 1 and 2 (and Cataclysm) for what feels like forever. With Sierra going down many years ago and the games industry contracting by dumping the RTS genre and moving to console development, as well as Relic becoming a Games Workshop studio, I was seriously beyond despair in terms of thinking the series would be lost to time through lack of both exposure and availability.

When some inklings of THQ secretly acquiring the Homeworld license surfaced, my heart skipped a beat. But after much silence and little to no action in regards to doing anything with the license besides sitting on it, I felt once more that Homeworld would fade into obscurity (these were the hardest times, knowing that Relic and THQ did absolutely nothing with the old games). Then THQ went down under and I remember being excited about anyone acquiring the HW license (even some amateur programmer wanted to buy it with crowdfunded money). Then Gearbox bought it and I figured I might as well kick back and wait to see what they did with the license - I was already accustomed to the series being left alone and even forgotten by its original developers, so my expectations were already low.

But looking at this whole process, Gearbox really did an admirable job with respecting the series and its legacy, although with their own design flaws here and there as it stands right now (it’ll hopefully get patched a lot). They paid a lot of money just to get the license, then they got in touch with ex-Relic members who worked on Relic, then they decided to overhaul the engine, repaint the textures faithful to the art style, re-do the multiplayer section of both games, redo all the cinematics, help Rob Cunningham’s (Blackbird Interactive) Shipbreakers, release a large collector’s edition for long-time fans, get Paul Ruskay on board to remaster the entire audio side of both games (and holy shit what a great job he’s done), help publish a hardcover artbook, and even hand out extra keys to people who had to wait for their collector’s edition to arrive. I think this Remastered collection is a really great one all things considered. It could have been a lot worse and consider the things that were actually improved.

Good to see that the game is getting patched and with some of the issues people have been reporting too. I need to finish up Homeworld 2 and then jump into the first one since they seem to have fixed the stuff that had scared me off or at least a major part of it. Originally I was going to wait it out since I had played through 2/3rds of the game in September but I do want to see the story again for a refresher if the issues are getting fixed up.

Now just hurry up with that OST Gearbox so I can have it playing while I read the artbook!

Lime those books you linked are very tempting but the price is scaring me away. I will hold out for a reprint on the more recent one and might have to save up for the others or just see what I can find online. As much as I would like to have that recent one $160 is just to much for a book even for a crazy spendthrift like me.

So, now the patch landed, I decided to continue the campaign. Got to mission 10, with the ghost ship, and I knew I'd have to fight it so I built 70 attack bombers (a mistake, really, but whatever...). I get to the mission, send my maxed multigun corvette and attack bomber swarm... and I find THIRTY assault frigates waiting.

Gotta love dat dynamic balancing I guess. (plus, hey, I get 30 free assault frigates!)

When you attack them, send in a host of salvage corvettes during the fight. Makes things really easy to just pluck away at their fleet.

It was never a problem, lost the majority of my strike craft but the alien wreck folded like a house of cards. Started the Supernova station mission and half my 30 assault frigates are in the radiation to begin with. :\

Thank you for the little info about Elson. It's interesting to me that the only two space games (of any genre) I can think of that have taken inspiration from 70's and 80's sci fi art are Homeworld and the upcoming No Man's Sky. Would love to see more game art take different inspirations like these that have been pretty much unused so far.

I just got my Art of Homeworld book and holy smokes it's awesome. If you are a fan of the art style and the ship design of Homeworld, you owe it to yourself to get this book. It's printed on heavy weight, matte paper that's almost like index card stock. There's interviews and comments on the designs throughout.

I think this is going to go up there as one of my top video game artbooks, along with Valkyria Chronicles Design Archive.

Gearbox confirmed on their forums today that there will be more printings, so keep your eyes open for them to return to stock/pre-order status on Amazon.

Is there a way to capture fighters and corvettes in HW1R? My salvage corvettes only seem to have a move order to them, i can't figure out if I'm supposed to be able to capture them or not.

A-fucking-mazing! I need some of this on my wall, going to hit up that website now.

How does the AI work in levels where they already exist(ie, don't warp in) For example in the 5th mission where it asks you to send a probe. If you don't send units forward and instead choose to mine resources along side the trigger point will the enemies do nothing or will they have 20 destroyers when you finally engage?

Edit: To clarify in mission 5 they have collectors.

IIRC and if they are using Homeworld 2's dynamic difficulty, it's the amount of stuff you have from the previous mission that determines the amount of stuff you'll face. Mission 5 in particular puts you against a carrier so it won't be able to deploy more Destroyers. It'll probably keep spamming fighters and frigates though and eventually its resource collectors may catch up to you, triggering the combat phase.

I had no problems with that mission with my starting frigates and corvettes, I sent the deah ball from different altitudes (ion frigates from below, assault frigates from above, corvettes in the front to divert fire along with a wing of salvage corvettes) and then just focused on capturing the enemy destroyer I faced, wiped out the rest.

But the game does appear to punish you for having too many ships. Made me re-think a lot of strategies. Still, salvage corvette fest!

In other news, are they going to put out a physical OST? I'm not too hopeful :( Wanted a double disc or something. After spending time in Japan I kind of learned to love these awesome OSTs and special editions of basically everything...

The artbook is still unavailable too... :( Huuurrryyyy, just print that baaaackkkk... I ended up buying a Hokusai 500 pages artbook in the meantime.

edit:

The patches fixed quite a lot of things, except for formations, which remain broken. Several bugs and errors/mistakes still lurk around but it's getting there. Hope they will focus on the fine details too, like giving back the tracking noise and feedback to assault frigates, fix the hyperspace box of ion arrays, make the research donut rotate and silly things like that.

Ugh, buggy mess right now.

I'm only at mission 7 of HW 1 and already I have a long list of obvious bugs. The most annoying of which are retiring, capturing, shaky interceptor dance, and terrible formations. Oh and guarding, holy heck is guarding bad.

Mission structure is also a mess. Reminding me to send a probe after the mission is over is kinda funny.

I'm trying to play this on my laptop but I can't run the remaster versions at all even after I updated drivers. the tutorial missions runs just fine but as soon as I start the single player mission it'll stuck at the loading screen for a little and then crash out. I ran the original Homeworld from the master package and it works fine too.

i don't think you can capture a fighters or corvettes with salvagers. The smallest class you can capture is the Frigate. Besides, I think they're too fast for a salvage corvette to grab them.

You can capture corvettes pretty easily, I haven't tried with fighters but I imagine in theory you can but they just don't stay still.

...Unless they run out of fuel, as the Kadeshi swarmers tend to.

You can't destroy it.

Question about this mission. I got screwed by the dynamic difficulty -- too many assault frigates to take down the alien ship with bombers. So I
built 14 salvagers, and paired each to a repair corvette and 2 bombers. Then I just stole ALL the hostile ships, including the Missile Destroyer.

But I just remembered something from the original: If the Taiidan Missile Destroyer is still under the alien ship's control when you disable the alien ship, then you receive Missile Destroyer tech (so you can build the Kushan Missile Destroyer). Of course, since I captured the Missile Destroyer using salvettes, that event didn't trigger for me.

In other words: if I miss a scripted event where I gain new technology, will I ever have another chance to gain that technology?

Karos Graveyard was a pain to play. Even in evasive your ships try to attack or just stay there as easy targets. Also, even after I eliminated all proximity sensors around the wreck where you have to dock, autoguns still could see my cloaked fighters, it made no sense, is this a bug? how can they see my freaking cloaked fighters? HW1 remastered has made all strike craft effectively useless, bombers do nothing, defenders do not even do proper spheres and now cloak fighters don't work? what the hell?

So the patch seems to have fixed most of the issues that people complained of, yeah?

There's still a few nagging issues, such a Salvage Corvette not pick up debris correctly, getting stuck when trying to load it onto the Carrier, and just outright giving up salvaging.

Had almost 600k RU's going into the last mission of Homeworld 2 lol.

Well that was fun, even if they completely shit the bed with HW1R.

You can capture corvettes pretty easily, I haven't tried with fighters but I imagine in theory you can but they just don't stay still.

I'm more surprised that you can actually capture corvettes. In all the years I've played the series I never knew that. Interesting.

I placed an order for that Chris Foss artbook from amazon.ca I wonder if they'll even get stock of it even after the 1 to 2 months they listed it at. Every 3rd party is selling the book for over $200 which is insane.

How do i actually order them to do it, though? My salvage corvettes don't seem to have a capture order for them, they only move up to them and that's it (at least on the mission i'm on). There's no capture order when i move the cursor over them, and using the capture button on the keyboard doesn't help either.

Just finished Garden of Kadesh, my fleet is stomping everything (ass ton of Heavy Corvettes, max amount of assault/ion cannon frigs, 2 destroyers, lots of salvage corvettes). I'm guessing the game will eventually stop being a cakewalk, but I'm having a hell of a time with it. Homeworld does scale better than pretty much any game I've ever played.

Just right click the target.
