I don't think it's Alex Kidd, unless Sugimori's being a bit creative with the colouring; there's a greenish tinge that doesn't match the general look of the character. It does, however, look like a flying kick of some description, though

I think it might be two distinct characters, actually, given I'm struggling to think of a single character who quite matches Sonic's stature to be the 'counterpart' in a mirrored design. AK would fit that, I guess, but the greenishness is bothering me.

Both have greenish tinges to them (Landstalker, Shining Force), but I'm still not particularly convinced. Nigel from Landstalker still doesn't cover the red bits, and Max from Shining Force only just does so (and I'm not quite comfortable with the contortions that make that up)

I'm just happy with the implied confirmation that this means the series is continuing beyond Sonic 2.

Remember the game choices are mainly OKed by SEGA Japan first.

They mentioned Puyo as a game that was taken off the shortlist because the producer thought it was a waste to work on a game that has pretty much no stereo 3D elements, but I guess it'd make for a decent bonus game.

Forget 32X, M2 could just port the Model 1 originals. And knowing M2 they'd just add the Deluxe/Saturn/Anniversary content anyway from later ports.
