made a fourth level titled 'De Daumier-Smith's Blue Period' (ID: 9FD1-0000-003F-4D8B)

0z6dD7A.jpg

sort of a side project and more an expression of mood than a mario level, that's all i'm gonna say

it's pretty short, let me know what you think about it if you happen to try it out!

Made a couple, hope you guys like them.
Fa90-0000-0017-0AF6
"Coin a new term for jumping"
ADC1-0000-001A-0D18
"Fire will lead to the treasure"
FF34-0000-0034-1F5B
"Take to the sky, reach the stars"
1FF1-0000-003A-E609
"Run and defeate bowser or get rich"
My stages aren't too hard. The first one is probably the hardest. There's a flaw at the end which could mean you won't make it which I would like to fix.
The last one has a gimmick that didn't work out, but it's still fun.
I focused more on game design and game feel with my stages. Won't take you more than like 2-3 tries to beat any of them if that but I tried to make them feel good™
I'd love some feedback

So GAF, can you review my level? I posted it earlier in the thread, but I'd like to know the general opinion of the stage.

it currently has a less than 2% completion rate last time I checked and been played by about 500+ people.

I purposely made it difficult, but it really is easy one you got the timing down.

Here's me clearing it.
https://youtu.be/2xmXRAMYWzE

Would love feedback because I personally think I can make good stages, but I kinda question it as well. lol

Looks hard as fuck! Have to remember to give that a go tomorrow. One thing that is putting me off is all the Mario U techniques you use in that video. It's not a criticism, just that I haven't played some of the new 2D games so those jumps are like witchcraft to me. I guess I need to learn..

Is there any way to impress blocks or make some sort of background? Say, for example, you're in a tree and instead of seeing the sky/standard themed background on what would be the inside/hollow-side of the tree, you see shadowed out blocks. I feel like I've seen people do this, but I could be wrong.

Spent waaaaay too long making my first* level.

"A Night In The City"

Shy Guy's woken up today with a headache. What happened last night at Club Star?...

Code: 7F8F-0000-003F-12F3

wiiu_screenshot_tv_01z8oyl.jpg

Not at all a platforming/normal level. More just a random attempt at telling a story, so it should be super easy.

*I made a basic/short ass level that has a 20% completion rate somehow. :|

That was trippy as hell, haha! I think Shy Guy ate a few too many mushrooms at Club Star...

How do you unlock all of those awesome effects? Like the Dizzy Shroom and those 3 psychedelic bullet things that shoot past you near the end of the level?

Well done man, that was awesome. Downloaded and starred

EDIT: Realized the bullet things I was talking about are just multi colored giant mushrooms.

There's something that could do that. The large gem blocks in NSMB or the weird large mushroom/tree in SMB. Last one of the second row. You can expand it and shake it to change it

The Mario U style is actually the easiest for the stage. I tested all four styles, but I also made it with Mario U in mind. lol

I actually was trying to figure that out as I made the stage and realized it's just the sound effect boxes, give them a shake and they all do something visual. I put the effect that dizzies you into the normal mushroom after that.

He who pursues two rabbits gets two rabbits.
I liked your course a lot, I didn't finish it but I did put it to try again later. I had a LOT of trouble at the part with the flying spiny because each time I would get there it would spawn him in a new area and sometimes, 2 or 3 at once making it real difficult to get around it, I finally once got passed it and then died on the fire rod lol.

Thanks. Yeah, the part with the Spiny cannon might be a bit much, but if you get on the moving platform as fast as possible, only 1 should spawn. If you fall off the platform at the end and fail to reach the next room, I think you can use the previous pipe to reset the current room so that you don't have to wait on the platform to return to the start.

Wispy Whims: 6D34-0000-003F-420E
Difficulty: Beginner
Length: Short
Secrets: 3
Style: Super Mario Bros. 3 :: Ground & Underground

I was admittedly already working on this before I saw the contest but it feels appropriate enough to apply. Feel free to give it a go, doubt I'll change much unless someone comes across a level breaking flaw.

You played my level before I even got to post it daydream!

Edit: Forgot to say that I limited myself to only items in the first two tiers for this one. I like doing levels like this because it really makes me stretch out the usability of basic stuff.

Edit 2: Well, other than the vine. :)

Did a level. My first attempt, and halfway through I was running out of resources, so I had to try other things and shorten it a bit. Not a challenging level, there are only one place you can die, iirc.

Take it, it's yours now!

I'm setting myself a goal of making a level a day and uploading it, but not putting it on GAF unless I feel the quality is better than what you would see normally.

Eventually, i'll churn out a masterpiece.

Alright guys, here we go.

This is like the third level I've made with cars in it, don't ask me why it keeps happening. In this case I couldn't not do it.

It feels relatively easy to me, but you know how that goes. :p

I present for everyone's enjoyment (I hope) my first three courses. I'm in the camp that's sick of seeing levels saturated with elements and no design sense whatsoever. I tried my best to play-test every section of each level to fine tune the challenge. I'm not sure if the clear rates for my levels are a good barometer of quality, but I know for sure they're possible and I hope also a little bit of fun!

Undergrounded: FF4A-0000-002F-BBFB
This was my first course. I chose to go with the original SMB style and placed it in an underground setting. Some clever gaps will test your ability to nail those tricky running jumps and a couple of hidden 1-Ups are in there for those with an explorative eye!

SMM-Undergrounded.jpg

Ups, Downs and Bills: C3E3-0000-0033-B936
My first above ground level done in the NSMBU style. This one I played with the idea of a tunnel-ish area that you romp around before eventually reaching a huge gap that can only be passed by using Bullet Bills to your advantage!

SMM-UpsDownsBills.jpg

Castle Hop: 9537-0000-003F-45DE
My first castle level done in the SMW style. This one is about skill and patience as the stage opens with some tricky jumps over open lava -- with jumping fireballs -- and the latter half is a tricky ride on a railed platform. It culminates in an encounter with Mario's arch nemesis, super-sized!

Played it, cleared it. I thought it was fun! Something absurd about those flowers bouncing up and down. Whilst it was harder than you might think to time the jumps over the flowers the level was short and had generous power-ups so I don't know why people aren't beating it. I guess there are a lot of shit players out there!

Haha those are some amateurs! Make that two completions :) That's the first gaffer level I've played and if they're all that good I'm in for a treat. I died 5 or so times at the beginning but once I had that figured out it was smooth sailing. Nice work man, great difficulty level

Thanks! Glad you liked it. I'm still considering lengthening it a bit in the middle so people could get a little more practice before the end, but I thought I provided enough options between power ups and koopas to clear it reliably.

Sorry for posting this again, but I think it got understandably overlooked in the torrent of levels recently and I'd be grateful for some feedback:

(it's 631F-0000-0033-8E35 if that's hard to read)

I think this is easily the best of the levels I've made so far - I've shown it to a few friends and they agree. I'm trying to figure out if I should refine it further or if it's fine as is.

Played, beaten, comment left. Had a lot of fun with this level. Left you feedback on miiverse.

Very easy, but sometimes it's fun just taking in the sights. The level was really creative and didn't even feel like a Mario game. Felt like an old 8-bit NES title using the Mario engine. Very nostalgic.

This one is called Mushroom Mines and it follows suit with being a fun level that wouldn't feel out of place in an official Mario game.
If you have time to spare give them both a try! I can guarantee you'll be able to beat them both, but can you find all the secrets too?

Anyone remember this jump from SMB1 in level 8-1?

It made me shit my pants when I was a little kid. So now that I can make my own Mario levels, I want to make everyone else shit their pants. I'm extending the long, precise jump concept through the whole level.

These levels are going to be a small challenge, but please try them out! I think the second one is actually easier (it's the one in the screenshot) but my brother almost killed me when I made him finish it.

Pleeeeeeaaaase someone try it and comment.

I'll play whoever's stages that tries and leaves feedback. I've edited this level like 5 times after uploading lol. Could really use help with nip tuck.
I played it and you can tell a lot of time and effort went into creating every obstacle. The spin jump is super under utilized, so it's fun taken to this extreme. A couple of critiques. The first spike off the first thwomp is super demanding. I never got past it without taking a hit on any of my multiple attempts. Consider adjusting or removing it. Secondly, the part where you drop off onto some donut blocks during the pswitch part. It isn't super apparent that you're supposed to fall there. Consider adding some coins for guidance.

Some reviews, but first I wanted to share someone else's level! I was playing 100-Mario Challenge on Expert last night and the levels were just awful, and I mean terrible. One of them was definitely worth playing though, a real diamond in the colossal pile of shit. It functions as an endless runner and is tough but very well balanced. I urge anyone interested to try it out.

This is probably my most ambitious course so far:

WarioWare, Inc. - 2B43-0000-0038-3F06

The accolades are already in but I think this is very well done. Captures that WarioWare feel and the execution is very good. Fans of the series have to give this a spin.

My latest level.

Between you and your buddy, I'm thinking there's something in that British water that encourages good level ideas. Another one that already got the big applause it deserves. I didn't love this as much as everyone else but there's no denying the craftsmanship.

So I've noticed that most of my levels have like 5% clear rates. I didn't think I was making levels that were really that hard, so I tried making one that was a lot easier, but still kinda fun to run through really fast.

Title: Goombas Take a Dive
Difficulty: Easy
Description: Goombas everywhere are just walking off of cliffs like lemmings. What crazy reason could they have for it? Perhaps they just want to take a dip in the lake.
Secrets: One hidden 1-up and a hidden door.
Code: 0ADB-0000-003E-184B

This level however is getting nowhere near the attention it deserves. There's a bit of a blind jump in the first third (possibly self-referential?) but the rest of the design is solid and the big reveal is worth the playthrough alone. Was sort of hoping for a big payoff with about 50 goombas but that might have felt shoehorned in practice. Please give this one a shot, GAF!

In case anyone missed it earlier, here's my latest:

Magicant: A30E-0000-003E-82AB

And the oldies:

The Spring's the Thing (just the basic tileset): F6DA-0000-0016-3AD4
Big Trouble: 3B43-0000-0016-FFC2
Shell Shock (the TMNT homage level): 0CCD-0000-001D-9748

THANK YOU!! Means a lot. I'll make the adjustments. Although the spike stays for now. It's just needed to shrink Mario before moving forward as doing the rest of the sequence full size breaks some stuff.

I'm a sucker for precision platforming and keeping momentum (check a couple of my levels for proof), so the first tread lightly had me smiling the entire way through.

DAMN! My favorite GAF level so far!

Right off the bat, I don't care for the spot in the beginning where you hit the turtle she'll into the wall.

I missed it at first since the tile colors are so close to each other. Without the turtle I couldn't progress, so I had to kill myself which took a while since I had a flower power.

Edit: the cheap hits from thwomps because the camera hasn't caught up yet makes it very trial and error.

Fix the issues and you'll have a gem since, despite all that, I had a blast playing it till I won. I could feel the playfulness of it all.

I've only played the first stage, and it's fun for how short and simple it is. The first single block jump can be overshot quite easily, as shown by all the death markers that have piled up there. Undershooting should be the main killer in these type stages or else it feels like I'm being punished for platforming too well.

Here's tonight's level. I tried to loosely follow the beginning sequence of Raiders of the Lost Ark.

WVW69iZBdOw8Tjvz_T

Raiders of the Lost Coin

9B89-0000-003F-247B

You start off in a jungle, where you can see the signs of an ancient civilization. You then enter a cave, wherein you must avoid traps in your search for the priceless idol (AKA the coin). At the end there is a thrilling escape.

I'm not as happy with this one as I was with my Jurassic Park level (5293-0000-003A-7E9E), and I can think of some changes I might make, but I figured I'd post it for now and move on.

Let me know what you think!

Had the same issue. I can't see someone nailing that forst try since you have to know ahead of time to remove some momentum on the earlier landing.

Even still, it was absolutely exhilarating.

I think it'd be bad ass having some visual food that seem like they'd harm you, but don't if you perform the jumps as you should. Would up the intensity factor.
