Cloud announced for Smash Bros

I just realized, don't they normally put up a website page and have some artwork done by a main series artist for newcomers?

Was kind of curious what a Nomura-ized smash poster would look like.
That will come closer to release. Lucas didn't get his page on the website until the day him, Roy, and Ryu were released. So we'll see Cloud's page in December.

FF7R won't be Playstation exclusive (maybe timed, who knows), so if the NX is up to the task, a port wouldn't be out of the cards, and I pointed out a page ago or so that in the same Nintendo Direct they were promoting FF Explorers, which Cloud is a cameo/summon in.

People forget that Smash is an amazing place for Nintendo to drive interest and cross-promote. Nintendo has a predominantly younger audience, they see these characters and they become legendary to them. Kids will want to play FF7R on their Wii U with their Cloud Amiibo while using it to unlock something in their FF Explorers game.

They don't only add characters because of cross promotion otherwise R.O.B. and Mr. Game and Watch wouldn't be a thing, but it's certainly a consideration, and moreso for DLC characters. DLC is added revenue, the basic roster is the basic roster and sometimes just needs warm bodies to fill it out. You leave out the best ones so people throw their wallets at you after they already bought the game.

Oh, left out my point. Unless there are new Banjo games on the horizon, cross promotion of Banjo-Kazooie makes less sense than Cloud.

Do we know if Cloud's inclusion had any sway because of the ballot or is it purely a buisness thing between Square and Nintendo?

Because if so, then the same could be done for Banjo. Hes a popular ballot choice and the two companies could work something out, such as releasing Rare's GBA and DS games on VC. Not to mention they must have already worked together to keep Jetpac in DK64.

Don't like the character model's face. Don't like Smash 4.

It's a good move for some cash. A bit shameful otherwise.

I wonder if the deal was they could use Cloud in exchange for flipping the bill on a bunch of their 3DS offerings including Dragon Quest.

Do you mind to not speak for other people? I know plenty people that like Dark Pit's inclusion.
I thought my hyperbole made it obvious that I don't really think everyone hates Dark Pit. And who would seriously claim that there's "scientific consensus" about a video game character?

As far as clones go, Dark Pit a pretty sorry example though. Lucas is how you do it right.

I'm on mobile, so I can't bold the second paragraph. But I agree with this analysis.

This is exactly what Nintendo did in Melee with March and Roy. And that's why Fire Emblem built a fanbase in the US - via Smash Bros. I agree with all the people who take this as a sign that FFDVIIR will be coming to NX. Some have brought up the Solid Snake example but I don't think that's at play here.

Time will tell. But chances are good after Square basically announcing DQVI for NX and VIIR being mulri-plat clearly.

I had some high hopes for Dark Pit considering he's Pit all the way. I would have assumed that he'd be easier to do with a completely different moveset. :V

Anyway, the wait is going to be a long one for December. It's crazy how much characters we have at the moment. I still don't have a Wii U either. lol xP

Well, he was rather very last minutes clone so I understand why he's not like Lucas and Roy. If he's coming back in Smash 5, it's possible that his moveset would changed like Roy and Falco.

What about Lucina actually?

I still can't get over the fact that Cloud is in Smash Bros.

Also, I love how everything looks great, but then you look at the ear. xP

I've gotta smile at the fact that Nintendo beat even Square themselves to an HD playable Cloud. (Well, for the most part, anyway.) Good shit to them for using the OG Buster Sword design and not the one from the compilation.

Edit: Scratch that, forgot about Dissidia Arcade. Cloud'll release in Smash before the console port even gets announced, though :V

Lucina doesn't count since she's....that w word material. /s

I've never played FFVII, does Cloud have a false left hand, or just a weird metal bracer that sort of makes it look like he has a false left hand?

The wrist on that thing seems too small to fit over his arm.

Nah it's just his weird bracer. In FF7, you didn't equip armor, you just got stronger bracelets that had materia slots to augment your abilities, so that's why it's even there on the character model.

Lucina is equally disappointing gameplay-wise, but more female representation is always nice. And she looks cool, so there's that.

I would temper your excitement on the off-chance that Burton misconstrued the question and thought it was related to the remake. But still!

It's Final Fantasy so there's probably a ton of cool looking but functionally-pointless things in Cloud's costume.

90% sure it is ballot free. Too fast to do all the rights negotiation AND have a character and a stage almost finished

Just saw this from the Twitter account of Cloud's English VA, Steve Burton:

Burton's response:

The tweet was dated 3 hours ago, so I guess that counts as confirmation that he's returning as the voice?

Great news. Wonder if cloud will sound somewhat more energetic compared to his dissidia/current self.

Oh...well I'll remain hopeful.

The announcement kind of flew over my head when I realized Square-Enix was game for lending out their IP for Smash Bros because, eh, well, Super Mario RPG's 20th anniversary is right around the corner.

I posted this elsewhere but felt like it was worth discussing.

Cloud MIGHT be the Ballot Winner. Yes the Ballot ended last month but Sakurai must had looked at the poll early and saw Cloud and decided to begin the negotiations to make the game.
How do I know Sakurai looked at results early? Simple. K. Rool and Inkling costumes. In all mock polls K. Rool and Inklings we're in the top 5 characters wanted for Smash. If it was just Inklings you would take this information with a grain of salt, but K. Rool is more out there in terms of costume choice, proving that Sakurai DID take a early sample of the Ballot.
Mewtwo took at least 6 months to finalize his character and moveset for release. I'm sure Sakurai's team did take a small break because the Holidays we're in the middle of this break. So let's just assume it takes 6 months to finalize a DLC character. Let's say Sakurai DID sample the ballot, he could had done so when he looked at K.Rool and Inklings. They release in late July, that's at least 4 months right there, but that's also assuming the costumes we're made in the week but most likely they we're decided and created well before that. So let's just say a month, that's 5 months now. And most noteworthy we didn't see Cloud's 3DS version form, only his Wii U, with no release date. So assuming Cloud releases next month, that's exactly 6 months of development for his release.

So Cloud COULD had been the Ballot winner, or at least Sakurai decided to add him BECAUSE of the Ballot.

I'm sure we will be seeing more characters revealed/added next month. (I'm still assuming we will be getting Wolf with Star Fox, and either another clone or original character like K.Rool, Inklings, or Issac.)

Lol atleast Solid Snake appeared on the nes, this makes absolutely no sense.

I have NO idea when massive amounts of $$$ made no sense to anyone who could use the internets.

I do agree with the notion I don't think "Nintendo" when I think "Cloud Strife" but then again I didn't like FFVII.
I still think SNES when I think FF (thank you FFVI).

Seeing that we got a Ken trophy with Ryu, should we expect a trophy with Cloud as well? Sephiroth seems to be the easy guess, but it could be Tifa or Aerith if they wanted to stick with heroes.

I want the whole party plus sephiroth but that may be asking for too much...

I never thought I'd say this, but for the inevitable character poster I want to see Nomura to draw it just so I can see his interpretation of Nintendo characters alongside the other third-party guests. Even if it's just zippers everywhere.

Smash Bros.! <3

I agree with this. I love Steve's voice for Cloud.

Yeah it's funny because when I first heard the voice, I kept hearing Jason Morgan (his role on General Hospital) because I watched that show with my dad as a teen. Whereas now when I see stuff about the soaps he's in nowadays I'm like "breh that's Cloud MF'n Strife, he'll wreck your ass".

He IS Cloud for me, just like Steve Blum is Spike Spiegel above any of the other zillion roles he's had.

I look forward to Link/Shulk in his artstyle.

I said this in another thread, I think his moves look freaking amazing, but he does not belong in that game, or on that system.

People thinking this is some kind of partnership need to get their heads out of the .......cloud. Unless Nintendo threw shitloads of money at square I highly doubt we will see Final fantasy 7 remake or something related to that on Nintendo's platform.

That's too big of a risk right now for Square to invest in putting a game known on another platform that is selling well, and garnering a lot of Japanese support.

C'mon people with the he doesn't belong stuff. Who cares if he doesn't apparently belong. He's in now and it's absolutely amazing. FF has history with nintendo and who else would they pick aside from one of the most popular character to rep the series?

....No snark ofcourse.

So weird, why use a playstation character when there's so many nintendo characters still left.

Comments like these throughout the thread are so weird to me. You're telling me that if the fate of the world rested in you coming up with a reason why Cloud got selected over other Nintendo characters, you couldn't think of a single reason?
