I hope it's comfortable as a handheld, and has a good screen. Capacitive multi touch is absolutely essential. Hope it has a good OS that allows some multi tasking, i.e. jump from game to a nice mobile phone level browser, or Twitter app, and be able to jump right back into the suspended game.

As a home console it needs to have a good serious controller, even if it's an added accessory. This detachable controller thing just sounds like it will be a pain to use.

I want a dedicated Nintendo console, and if I can get a home TV system and handheld combined, and if the graphics are at least fairly modern when used as either, then I most probably will bite.

It has potential, and it's gone the polar opposite way to what I wanted from Ninty, but it probably will be a decent success, at least. Need to see their plans, design, pricing etc. Please give us a premium-ish device out of the gate. Nintendo's first iteration of their handhelds for years now have been horrendoes.

So this is the 3DS successor, not the WiiU successor, right?

If this is meant to be the WiiU successor, I am fucking done with Nintendo.

We had a reliable insider state that the CPU was beyond Xbox One.
Either
a) He was lied to.
b) Plans changed
c) There is also a Home SKU

Which is it?

SuperMetalDave is right. This rumor goes against what Nintendo has said. Eurogamer isn't more trustworthy than anybody else.

I don't think Iwata would have really just said "yeah, this is the exact detail of what our next system is going to be" in a random investor's meeting when they still had Wii U and 3DS games to sell.

I think there's a possibility that Iwata's statements about future devices were not 100% meant to be literal, but have probably been interpreted that way. It's also possible for plans to change over time.

We're getting a massive, massive upgrade to the best current system on the market, the 3DS, and it will be getting the support of the 3DS plus Wii U.

This system is basically my dream system.

I'm sorry for those of you who are disappointed, but this system is basically perfect for me.

No BC according to the article.

Pie and Beans

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
People still clinging to Iwata quotes from 3-4 years ago :lol

Things change. Nintendo don't want no part of that home console market anymore. You don't go up in sales from WiiU due to mysticism and 'hope', you go down. Unless you change the rulebook.

Its weird and unprecedented but we honestly cant rule out the multiple SKU approach just yet can we?

Define multiple SKU? Could we see an NX - as we know it today, launch as a handheld-only & as a bundle with the base dock unit? We could.

Should one expect Nintendo to release a Nvidia powered handheld and then an AMD powered home console while unifying their development teams and having two systems with different architecture? That seems unlikely. If they did this then nothing changed between the 3DS/Wii U era of support.'

We clearly don't have all the details right now, and insanity will continue.

Dissaponting thing for me is NX is just another gimmick by Nintendo.
All i wanted was a traditional Gamecube/ N64 console with PS4 graphics.
Tegra chipset decision will hurt the third party development.
And no BC is FUCKING BULLSHIT.

"All I wanted is something that would not stand a chance commercially"

(To clarify, I'm not sure that the NX does either. But gimmicks are the only thing that give Nintendo a chance nowadays - the target market for PS4 and XB1 will not consider Nintendo a similar alternative/second platform. Third party support will reflect that fact, not the architecture.)

Its weird and unprecedented but we honestly cant rule out the multiple SKU approach just yet can we?

Well, not completely without Nintendo announcing it, but it just makes no sense - there'd be something like 90-95% audience overlap between the hybrid and the more traditional console, leaving the latter hopelessly redundant.

That is, like, not weird at all. It's incredibly smart, actually. That's what so many seem to be missing. It's like they can't wrap their heads around Nintendo being anything other than "the traditional game company that releases a console and a handheld every 4-5 years".

There's a big difference with missing, to disagreeing. I know what they've been doing i understand their changes, but those changes I dont agree with because it doesn't reflect IMHO real change for them to be a competitor in the core gaming space.

I GUESS I don't want to give up on Nintendo being still in core consoles. But this device pretty solidifies them not wanting to compete in that space.

Which is unfortunate, and it's very short sighted of you to group people who disagree with this decision they are making.

People bitching about cartridges in 2016 should educate themselves on the matter before...well...bitching.

We're not in the 90's anymore guys.

I mean, you can bitch about whatever you want, sure, but cartridges is the thing in this whole story for which there's not much to whine about, it's not as expensive as before and it offers better performances than discs.

If this is true then this would deeply please my preferable handheld needs.

What's going to make or break it though is whether it has good battery at launch.

So this is what Nintendo is going to compete with Microsoft and Sony for the next 4/5 years?

A Tegra handheld/home console hybrid?

And Nintendo expects the likes of EA, Take2, Bioware (etc) to port AAA games from Xbone Scorpio/PS4 Neo to a ARM architecture.

Looks like a jack of all trades, master of nothing to me.

Nintendo doesn't compete with Sony and MS since the Wii, they're their own thing.

What is life? Seriously though things change.

I don't mean it like that - like things can't change - I just mean it got me thinking in general. What defines a hybrid system? What is the one thing that makes it not just a 'handheld with hdmi out.' what's the difference?

Wasn't interested in the next Nintendo so far but this definitely did. Hybrid indeed sounds interesting and definitely a very ballsy move. Could be a homerun if executed correctly, pricing of the console, games etc.

Where is the gimmick or new experience?

Right, there isn't. You have an handheld that you can plug into your tv and play games on tv. Just like ipad or iphone. I believe vita did it too.

Why would we need to believe Nintendo that they don't come with new gimmicks or experience?

How many time did eurogamer hit the jackpot?

I'm not sure exactly how (and it seems nobody is really wondering here) but it's pretty clear that if there is a dual controller thing with the portable, it's not just about not offering a second controller for free. It's about creating new lan game possibility, really probably centered around games like monster hunter.

This is what I thought it would be from the very beginning. A hybrid handheld/home console that can be played on the go or on the big screen.

Nintendo has claimed otherwise but they were probably just deflecting. Also they said it was completely new concept, which it is not. But consolidating all their games and developers onto a single platform is a fantastic idea. Combining the library's of their handhelds and home console means more games can be developed for the system.

Another thing, there is no mention of the supplementary hardware box that Nintendo patented. It can increase the power of the system when playing from home. Perhaps a way to increase power for when using it as a home console ?

My 500 GB SSD isn't that big size wise. I don't think I'm too worried about the handheld portion's capacity.

I don't know how feasible it is but it would be nice if the base that it gets attached to when connected to a TV would up the power some.

This is really the only way Nintendo can get me on board. The games between the Wii U and the 3DS are fine but there's no way I'm buying 2 Nintendo products in the same gen again and the Wii U alone disappointed even with a few great games. Hell, even the 3DS disappointed coming from the DS but it still is a great system with great games. This is a good way to get all my Nintendo fix in one machine. I'm interested to know more.

So, is it likely that this leak's timing has to do with the Nintendo earning's release? I'm hoping for the press release with confirmation of reveal window, etc. in the next 16 or so hours.

Wuold be the size of a Vita when buttons out, smaller when slided in i guess.

WHOA!!! Makes a huge difference for sure buddy! That is sleek looking like that! I also imagine the sides sliding in and out!

Slided in where? Behind the screen? Then where is the actual board?

Well, the body doesn't have to be exponentially larger than the 3DS body now, that you hold. All the board parts can still fit in there; think like a cell phone.

Regarding the dock, I was also thinking there could be a way to click the two sides into the back so that each side would fan out. Then, if desired, you could pop them right out! Or, you could have a physical track (like the stylus one in the DS/3DS) that they go into and out of; this way would also be how the screen "body" part slides into the dock.

So when the two controllers come off the back, one has buttons on the left side that that other has on the right side? Or its two sticks side by side and two sets of buttons? Or...both are mega tiny controllers?

Thank you for the mock-up!

(Sorry about my mix-up, Orioto!)

Orioto's mock-up is better with the better ratio! Everyone quote that one!

I'm imaging two little controllers, Wii-style, but that could also possibly combine in the middle. Though...

Actually it should be more like this for comfort both in solo and detached modes.

This way both players could have the rounded edges in their palms when holding them. As well it's a more comfortable position when using it with the screen.

It does need more room on the sides though. Having the thumbstick and buttons perfectly aligned is uncomfortable. The top buttons and thumbstick should be 1/4-1/2 an inch further out.

I think your suggestion of have it asynchronous is a great one! Then, once detached, they could also maybe connect/click together for a personal little gamepad much easier than if they are identical side by side! You also are right about if you have two people on the same screen!

You need 20 handhelds for 20 people.

How will you play with no TVs? If you're saying with off screen support like the Wii U then everyone will be gathering around a bunch of handhelds which is not really worth being excited about. Think I'd rather take the tome to use TVs.

This is really incredibly weak hardware even for right now in terms of a home console. We are talking less than XB1 levels. For a handheld this sounds plenty good, but man hooking this thing up to a TV isn't gonna look great. Especially 3 years from now when things like Scorpio on the market.

playing a game like zelda in a shitty environment like a crowded, smelly, loud bus sounds terrible

i'd rather just, you know, put down the controller, take a break, and come back home after work to play some more on my couch on a big nice tv.

Doesn't have to be Zelda!

And ymmv. I don't mind playing on the bus... hell, there are some months where all of my gaming comes from playing on the bus.

Nintendo is really going to make a Wii U 2.0 with more tablet like features now?

I honestly don't think this will do well. It's like 6 years too late.

If there is a traditional, stationary NX home console, it'll most likely just be a set-top version of the handheld, same performance and all. But there probably won't be.

I think people should just wait for official announcement for more detailed informations on what would works with upcoming console or not.

I just hope that they are going to add ethernet to the system but I have a doubt that they would.

you are asking for too much here even if i agree with you you know its not going to happen

Biggest concern for me is battery life. I can't see a 'high powered' device lasting too long on the go.

Yeah, worried about this too.

So this basically means we'll have home console quality games on a handheld? That seems amazing (but the other way around doesn't sound quite good tbh).
