Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage
From every hands-on impression I've read online about 1, 2 Switch and ARMS, I have a feeling GAF is going to be surprised by the success of those 2.

Vita had a great lineup of games, a good price(minus memory cards) and free online. Reincarnation of Vita this is not.

I'm so depressed. Gonna take a while to get over this. I really thought Nintendo were gonna get this right.

Vita had free online? I thought you had to have PS Plus.

Just finished watching the presentation aaaand nintendo still has no fucking clue specially coming after the damn wii u. Expensive, crap overall performance, weak lineup of games and fucking ripoffs with accessories.

In EU at least you'd have to be crazy to buy one of these at launch considering it's more expensive than a PS4 slim.

Someone that tried the 1, 2, Switch milking game said it really felt like milk spraying out...
If Nintendo could somehow incorporate this Rumble HD technology into a sex toy, they may just have a hit on their hands.

I think 1,2 Switch looks a bit weird but also novel and no doubt it will be somewhat fun.

Man, after some time thinking about it and reading up on details, I'm really bummed out about the Switch.
The conference really wasn't all that great, the 3rd party segment in particular was terrible. Why even have the likes of Nagoshi and Suda come up when they don't have anything to show?
And with EA dude I'm sensing another "unprecedented partnership".
Even Nintendo's own stuff outside of Zelda and Xenoblade wasn't super exciting. I personally don't care for Splatoon and Mario Kart 8 having no new tracks is also a little disappointing. And something about Mario Odyssey, even outside the awful looking City segment, just looks off.
Then there's the whole paid online and Smartphone app thing that's just utterly baffling. Like, what?
Also disappointing they showed nothing of the OS or other features.
On top of all this is the high cost of the thing. I'm a poor student so 330 Euros just for the system itself is a little too rich for my blood. Not to mention I'd have to buy a high capacity MicroSD with it because the thing just has 32 gigs of onboard storage, plus 70 bucks for a pro controller, plus the eventual online fee, plus games. All that adds up. The overall pricing doesn't seem to have gotten a good response over the internet, not a good sign for them.
I think I'm out for now even though I'd love to play Zelda. Again, really bummed. And to think I was all in with the initial teaser. Switch looked so good on paper. But Nintendo had to nintendo it I guess.

Ask me which Shakespeare novel is best
So after getting up at 3:30am to watch the presentation and having time to get my thoughts together, I've come off a little mixed and baffled.

First of all, I don't think any of the rumours helped Nintendo's cause, especially due to the duration of some of them. They've been around weeks and months and with evidence backing them up, I expected something more from the presentation, but that's not Ninty's fault, it's mine.

Anyway, to start off with the pros -

+ Zelda: A freaking marvel. The trailer was expertly crafted and portrayed not only the sheer vastness of Hyrule and it's lore, including fan favourite races returning, all with charming and varied redesigns (the Zora's especially look brill in the new art style), but also a gripping story. Zelda's pain was shown through that wail. It was deep, and conveys the story has a lot more going on that it originally seemed. Game play, as always looks pure fun. The freedom looks insane, and the environments immersing. They have a generation defining game here, and they know it.

+ Mario: Unexpected. The gameplay as always looks stellar, and the new hat mechanic looks like it'll expanded the the little dudes actions even more. The open world harking back to 64 and Sunshine is a welcome change from the recent linearity, though I loved Galaxy and 3D World. Something different is always nice, but I'd be lying if I said they might have gone too different. While I love the look of New Donk City, the realistic people do not mesh at all, made worse by the dreadful models. I assume the theme is exploring different art styles in different world, and I have feeling some are gonna look better than others.
Its a bit of a shame as Mario is know for it's consistently charming and colourful graphics. Nevetheless, it looks fun and adventurous, and that's the main core of a Mario game.

+ Fire Emblem Warriors : This was a dream for me. There's always been that community idea that the series would go well with the Musou genre, and after Zelda it seemed like a real possibility. Still, I was shocked, hyped, and it really blew up the presentation for me. I only wished they showed more.

+ Arms: Interesting. I love the crazy character designs, Spring Man especially. The graphics are pure Nintendo too, which always a good thing. I'm a bit concerned with the gameplay, as most of it was showing the opponents missing their punches, I can't imagine that would be all too satisfying, but with it's motion controls I reckon it'll be a lot more exciting, and getting that punch in will really matter. The two protagonists seem like good candidates for Smash, offering a new play style, so hopefully the game will catch on. Splatoon has proved new IPs can dominate, as long as the game play is good. Lets hope Arms proves it has good game play.

As for the cons -

- The Price: It's too much Ninty. Maybe only £30 too much but that money could have gone to purchasing another game, especially when you don't have a pack in. No ones gonna buy your party game 1, 2, Switch if sold separate, why would they? Half of this conference seemed to be appealing to the has been Wii crowd, but that crowd ain't gonna buy a console for nigh of £300 for a few party titles when they can get some party thing from Mankind that offers a similar experience for a third of the price.

- Launch Line Up: Zelda is epic, don't get me wrong. I'm getting one at launch solely for that game, but no Mario Kart Ninty? Really? No Smash Bros? They're presumably ports with little added on. Surely you can see how easy it would have been to have them for launch and how many more sales it would attract. But nah, gotta have Snipperclips. This is ok for me personally, as I'm a slow gamer so Zelda will last me a while, but I understand people complete games fast, and with only 4 titles standing out to me for the year, peoples anger is justified.

- Promises: A lot of this presenation was showing off the bare minimum of titles. Thanks for confirming FE:Warriors, but I have no idea what it's going to be like. How come you didn't have more to show on these supposedly upcoming titles? You can't get people to buy a console for games they know little about. Honestly, with the amount of time you've had on this there really should have been more to show. It just seemed like "buy our product, and here's a mention of what you'll get. Nothing substantial or anything, but at least you know it's coming". And that just isn't doesn't cut it.

All in all, I'm getting one, as I know Ninty will deliver through the consoles life. It just seems too costly for what your getting at the moment, and I felt unsure of what the system was exactly offering. I honestly don't know how well it'll do. Zelda seems to be it's saving grace, and a big one at that, other wise this could have actually gone worse than the Wii U. The problem is, when your saving grace is also going to be available on a console millions of people already own, how will that play out?

Its going to be interesting, and I know Nintendo console starts are always a bit rocky. Hopefully It'll go the way of the 3DS rather than the Wii U, but they need to give more reasons to purchase one. Pokemon and Smash down the line will help, but something like Metroid could have really helped first impressions. I feel excited for the titles I like, but the lows of this presentation were low.

Im a Nintendo fanboy, and I wish them all the best however. I also wish GameXplain all the best in tackling this massive behemoth. Good luck guys, can't wait for the videos!

The fixation on the joycons like they're innovative was just sad. This company is so out of it, they have a huge image/branding problem and haven't made any attempt to fix it. This is not the way you redeem yourself after a dumpster fire like the Wii U

Positives

- Zelda trailer was amazing
- Loved the feel of the Mario game
- SMT5 (though its multiplat)
- Third party surprises like Tales, No more Heroes sequel
- ARMS has a nice artstyle (though full price is not a good choice)
- Good presentation style

Negatives

- Price
- Paid online with poor game service
- Worrying lack of third party support for upcoming and soon to be releasing games from both Western and Japanese regions.
- Poor battery life
- No UI, system demonstration
- System is very underpowered. Looks to be on WiiU level. 720p screen
- Xenoblade 2 looks bad

Overall, some nice surprises but wholly disappointing. With the seeming lack of third party support and weak specs, this is going to be more like WiiU than 3DS.

It was a big let down tbh. They should have just blown their load on this presentation to make a good first impression. The presentation felt lacking and the bad news about the payed online subscription and high console price really adversely impacted my enthusiasm towards the console.

1 2 Switch is a fine game to have at launch. I thought it looked interesting. But Nintendo are fucking morons for not making it a pack in title.

As for Arms, I thought it looked like great fun. Basically an enhanced Wii Boxing.

I was thinking now about what Switch is. And somewhere in this conference the basic idea of Switch, that is a hybrid or a console that you can play on the go was lost. Like they passed pretty quickly over it while explaining the hardware and the modes and then the conference turned into a pure home console conference. One in which the super rumble and the IR camera was more important than the portability. All the games have been then shown as home console games and nothing else.

It's like Nintendo hasn't actually noticed why the reveal trailer was so well received.

I'm still shocked by how bad that presentation was. Another gimmicky, underpowered console by Nintendo. Another Nintendo home console I'll pass. Zelda looks incredible, though.

I'm so depressed. Gonna take a while to get over this. I really thought Nintendo were gonna get this right.

And you know what, Vita cost 250$, and it was actually seen as expensive by most people.

I'm surprised people in here don't talk about the price more than that really.. This is insane. This is suicide. People think any sort of value will justify it. It's insane for a home console like that, and it's insane for any portable.

I see everywhere on my facebook and here, this morning, people super hyped about Xenoblade 2 and Splatoon 2, so basically hardcore Nintendo crowd having bought a WiiU to begin with.

Also Nintendo went further again in its messy pile up philosophy. The whole picture with every Nintendo console every created piled up is soooo illustrative lol. Wii had a coherence. Even Zelda TP had motion control for exemple.

I think what i hate the more about the Switch is how it's souless and has no direction. It's everything and nothing at the same time, cause it has the possibility of every control but none of its game use them already, so nobody will never care. Cause its line up is a mix of ports and horizontal sequels plus old games randomly poping up with no reasons...

When Nintendo releases the Snes, the N64, the NGC (all those consoles that were no showed in their teaser picture earlier this week), but even the Wii, or even the WiiU, those consoles have an identity. Which means they have a defined control style, games have a defined look and are designed for it, and feel that way. But the Switch is some sort of compilation without focus. There is no visual identity in its games, there is no direction in its controls..

It's the first Nintendo consoles that feels like it doesn't exist in its own. We're note even discussing, or wondering if the mario, the Xenoblade need the Switch or use its features. It basically doesn't need its own concept. All those games could be WiiU games, as simple as that.

And i'm sooo confused how Nintendo released the 3ds and the WiiU at bad prices, and with late software. They talk about unifying (or not we still have no clue), and a better organization in their development etc.. They talk about not doing the same mistake.
And here we are with their emptiest line up since the N64 and an insanely ovepriced console. And people justify it, it's crazy, really.

Nintendo releases a 3ds in 2012, at 250€. They have to panic price cut some weeks later.
2017, Nintendo releases a "portable" at 329€ and people are like 'yeahh but it's fine it has more value"

Yeah for real though it is pretty staggering just how far from reality Nintendo are at this point. They are incredibly lucky to have such a dedicate core fanbase because most companies misreading and misunderstanding their market to this extent would have been utterly annihilated by now in almost any field.

If Nintendo can't put out a console that normal adults are interested in buying then I would like to see the day that Nintendo goes third party so we don't have to endure this embarrassing hardware anymore but I'm starting to genuinely worry that all that legendary creativity is being sapped away and replaced by the years of Nintendoland, Wii Music, 1 2 Switch etc.

I mean when you look at what the company currently seems to value and invest in you have to wonder how long the truly great traditional game devs will hang around for?!

Not a lot of content, and yet...

Mario Odyssey looks amazing. Yeah, it looks like a slow as molasses year, but good God, that game looks great.

I'm guessing EA wanted to have the Frostbite "face" on stage. It sends a much more believable message of platform support than just having an exec -- one with no coding and development job -- announce a game for Switch.

It seems thata Switch's Fifa wont run on Frostbite, it will be based on the PS3/360 version. LOL

The Switch version of FIFA will be a legacy custom version based on the PS3/360 games, no Frostbite.

Skimmed through it, looked pretty boring... like what the heck was that EA guy there for?

He is a passionate Nintendo fan, as you can gather from the fact that his son is called Luigi. What he didn't tell was that his son if from an affair his wife had, which explains the expression on his face.

God what happened last night. All my hype is gone. How could they not see what the fans wanted? I was going to get this day one, now I'm not sure if I'd buy this on Black Friday for $249.99 if it even goes on sale. $300 is too much for that, doesn't get close to PS4/Xbox One offerings of games,Blu-ray/UHD player, etc. Paid online now, I was shocked to see that.

What they showed wasn't all that great. Zelda and Mario looked awesome but Mario is at the end of this year. I wonder if it would have been better to launch in the fall. The launch list of games doesn't look at that great. Battery life is terrible. This is looking like Wii U all over again.
Maybe the Treehouse event will show more.

That was... disappointing.

No MonHun means definitely no buy, Xeno X begged for sequel, yet we're gonna get even uglier faces and different setting altogether, no Donkey Kong, very weak starting line-up...

Nah, maybe in 2018 and only after some price drop.

The good thing is that has all the buttons as other normal adults console and it can run most modern engines. So besides all the stupidity in the joy cons the console remains a normal console also.

I think thats the beauty of it.

I can't think of any company so intent on careening into failure. How hard is it to see where you went wrong and at least attempt some course correction. They don't know how to deliver the right message because they're too arrogant/ignorant to know how they should present their product. I don't know how or why anyone would defend what I saw last night, it honestly was a shitshow.

They need more than that, they need an other form factor. I still think it's planned. The device is just SOOO no targeted at people who play only on 3ds. When you think about it, it's soo not for them.

Switch is designed for those who play at home in the couch, without a tv, maybe.
But the portable users, who play in the subway, in the bus.. The kids who plays in the playground ? This is not designed for them at all.

Wich makes the Switch even more dead. Cause it's only chance at selling more than 10 millions is to win a part of the 3ds crowd. But Nintendo doesn't want to.

Agreed! I think they need to drop the price to $249. Wii U all over again. They are going to sell at any price but to really move systems at $300 it going to be so hard with PS4/Xbox One at the same price with better graphics and cheaper games.

IT's funny, I wasn't sold on the switch after that reveal trailer in November, I am now. I defintely have some pretty huge concerns but a new mario and splatoon game in year one is enough for me.

You realise that each individual twitter world tends to be one big bubble yes? Because we tend to follow people that share opinions with us.

Idk, maybe it's because I'm from europe, where most people haven't seen the lackluster presentation and basically woke up to new trailers for Mario, Zelda, Splatoon 2 and Xenoblade 2. It fueled the already positive reception the Switch had a while back.

I feel like we may be witnessing the downfall of Nintendo here folks. What a disaster. As a Wii U owner, I see no reason to be an early adopter on this thing. I feel the same feelings I did before the Wii U launched, which was "Oh, the launch lineup is kind of light, but it's a neat concept, it will probably get better with time!". That's not good enough anymore, Nintendo really needed to hit it out of the park; instead they got up to the plate, threw a couple good pitches, and then patted themselves on the back like they won the game.

I sat last night and this morning and watched 4 chances to pre-order pass me by. Yesterday I was convinced I would be day 1. Now I'm not sure I'll ever get this thing. The launch lineup is a joke. A mini-game collection, a few ports, and a game(s) I can play on a console I already own. Wow! As time goes own I get ARMS, which admittedly looks cool but not $300 cool, and an upgraded port of a game I own. Splatoon 2 is the first real heavy hitter, which could be as late as August.

I'm hoping the LKD rumor mill comes to fruition in Nintendo's E3. If it does, I'll probably get back on board and pick one up this summer. If it doesn't, their E3 conference may well be a funeral. Skyrim isn't even a damn launch title for fuck's sake. Honestly, they should have waited until the holiday season. This should have launched with their full year lineup. Don't promise Zelda to launch on Switch and Wii U simultaneously, don't announce Zelda Switch at all; whatever. This is not the day 1 lineup a company in dire needs of wining back over the gaming community needed. I've been a Nintendo fan my whole life, this was probably the wake up call I needed. Get your shit together guys!

Everything about the presentation was just so 'Wii U'.

-The misjudged casual title (Nintendoland / 1, 2 Switch)
-The solitary late 3rd party port designed to make us think it'll have support when it clearly won't (ME3 / Skyrim)
-The bizarre unreadiness of many titles for launch
-The focus on what's 'innovative' rather than what the value proposition is
-The lack of many of the nitty gritty details people were looking for such as VC, voice chat etc
-Massively overpriced compared to its competitors
-Massively underpowered compared to its competitors (in fact, the visuals of each game were 'just so Wii U' - hard to notice a difference)

If the Wii U failed, I simply cannot see a reason why this would succeed by comparison, or fathom why Nintendo would try the exact same thing again.

Gamexplain though the presentation was great.

LOL

What were they like?

I feel like I got coal for Switchmas. Definitely "wait and see" and not "day one".
I kind of feel this way as well, unless my friends all pick one up. Then it'll be great to do the multiplayer thing, which is always fun with Nintendo systems.

Otherwise, they've lost me a little bit. Not enough full game trailers. Too much "we're working on something for this system and you'll see it soon." The sales pitch fell short for me, and the presentation style was just awkward, as usual. This is why I have no idea why people prefer live conferences. Something akin to E3 2014 should ALWAYS be the target for Nintendo.

Mario and Zelda look wonderful of course, but I'm surprised the former won't be here until the holidays. That kind of took the wind out of my sails.

My biggest pet peeve of the conference were the interpreters though. Holy shit. One of them was so bad I wanted to bang my head against the wall.

Same applies here, but long run should be fine. Especially if the strong Japanese developer support continues.

Spla2oon is just a port with DLC as well; should be on Wii U.

TBH I didn't play all that much of Splatoon (like 10 hours or so), so I didn't want to make this call, but that's also kind of what I gathered from what they showed. Kinda just seemed like the original game with what other games would call a new season attached to it.
