The Smash community harassed a 15 year old female player to the point she decided to stop playing the game

Basically: She beat Ally, one of the best smash players in the world, with Isabelle, one of the worst characters in the game, and it became a short sensation. "15 year old girl Isabelle beats a top 10 player" is a fantastic tagline for clickbait youtubers and for reddit upvotes so it blew up. Envy reared its ugly head from a few players in the scene who didn't think she deserved the attention for what was just a local win. And a lot of them thought she was only getting attention because she was a girl. In the end it went so far she announced today that she would stop playing smash because of all that and would abadon her nametag, and everyone in the FGC is just disgusted about it.
Her tweet:

I would keep playing and mock people in a Dr. Disrespect kind of way. Nothing would make them more upset than not taking their trolling serious. If I gave up playing my favorite games due to online "bullying", I wouldn't be gaming. My inbox used to be full of death threats and I always replied with thank you letters.

I mean, the smash community is the type of community that would be okay with one of its top players to forgoe a tournament they are already attending because their '1 in 4 kinda glitchy' controller that allows them to perform 'glitch actions that make them competitively more viable' is broken and they can't use a regular one.

I have to agree. I've only ever played Smash once (on the N64, and I didn't like it) but I know how 'enthusiastic' the community can be from just absorbing news like this on the internet. Surely the girl should be able to harness the hate and use it to her advantage?

hmm weird. I feel like that would be encouraging. It doesn't matter what the people said she just beat a top 10 player. Period. Seems dramatic to let the haters stop you from having what may be a very rewarding hobby playing a game.

edit: Looking at her twitter sees like she went back on her original statement. said she was ok and thanked people for the encouragement. That is awesome.

Minors shouldn’t have social media accounts. It opens the door to round-the-clock bullying/harassment, which these kids can’t cope with. Some kids are targeted, and others are responsible for the harassment. It’s should fall upon parents/guardians to keep kids off of social media, but that isn’t gonna happen.

That said, shitty as it is, when you “put yourself out there” in any kind of social media capacity... you’re most likely gonna get harassed. It’s difficult for social media sites to respond to every claim of harassment, and even then, there’s often no real punishment aside from suspensions.

And deciding to be a part of the FGC, especially as a minor, is a risk in and of itself. There’s plenty of evidence out there pointing to shitty behavior in that community. Trash talk, “pop offs”, fights, etc. The highly competitive nature of the community breeds aggressive/shitty behavior, especially “in the moment”.

I suppose the fix is as simple as asking people not to act shitty— but we all know that’s a fool’s errand.

a lot of things but im not wrong here. but i agree you shouldn't chastise a young teenager for their behavior. but u know how virgin incels are online..
You Shouldnt chastise children/young teens for posting provocative pictures online? This is what's wrong with this generation, if my daughter did this, the game she would be allowed to play is monopoly. Granted she shouldn't be teased and mocked but with pictures like that floating around, I wouldn't exactly why the treatment is happening entirely.

god how did i get sucked into this conversation....let me rephrase. a minor is never wrong. if she is getting bullied its the bullies fault not her fault. and taking "provocative" pictures is what teens do its part of the hormones and figuring things out and ect ect look i really dont want to get into this so please don't quote me anymore.

lol things like this are exactly why I said Nintendo was smart to keep it's distance from the professional smash bros mutants in that other thread.

What a weird position to take a shit on the toilet.
And why the hell does she makes a pic of doing it

It sucks that people are pathetic enough to harass a teenage girl due to her being good at a game, but I agree she should just learn how to ignore them/turn it against them. Why would you quit something you are good at because other people are envious of your success?

Not defending trolling or other online nonsense, people need to grow up. However there doesn't seem to be any end to it in sight so just say "fuck em" and keep doing what you're good at.

I remember months ago there was this French kid who was a prodigy in kof14 and even got two wins in a 5v5 country vs country tournament. All the players supported him fortunately

Random threats here and there from people with your online handle....
Constant daily threats from people who know what you look like...
Yea not really the same.
Let me know when you get 100 threats a day and tell me how that makes you feel.

Who gives a shit lol, like why is this a "headline"?

"People get butthurt and someone stops playing a video game because people were mean to them"

Welcome to every single day of the internet and online video games.

A child quits a game after being bullied by adults upset over her basically enjoying a game. You can keep your head in the sand but that's some pretty nonsensical and toxic culture, that's worth talking about. Your comment equates to the "Boys will be boys" mentality which just doesn't fly.
Also She's 15. Wtf @ half these posts

Why would you quit something you are good at because other people are envious of your success?

It's easier. My favorite streamer even admits his modest stream of 500-2000 people a day on Twitch also has a reddit thread where hundreds dissect his every word to use against him, every joke, and send him threats constantly.... He even had part of End Game ruined by constant clickbait emails to his personal account. He has tens of thousands who love him but it's hard to drown out the fraction of that spreading toxic hate towards and about him. It takes a lot of mental strength as an adult to be a public presence - I couldn't imagine how much you'd need as a child of 15. (Though I do admit at 14-18 years kids need more supervision on their public persona.)

I'm honestly wondering at this point if social media SHOULD be an adults-only (18+) sort of thing. Could stuff like this actually screw up a kid's developing mind, similar to how so many child stars have grown up to be weirdos?

I've been bullied in video games online for literally decades and when I was a child, get over it lol. It's the internet, it's not real life.

She's 15, she has no idea what she's doing.

All the more reason to keep minors off of social media, given this argument.

If there’s a belief that minors have “no idea” what they’re doing, then they need to be protected from harm at the very least and from making mistakes that can haunt them for the rest of their lives (sharing provocative images of themselves, making social media posts that reflect negatively enough to harm their reputations before they are adults).

If her parents or guardians can’t monitor and/or yank her off of social media for her own protection, given the harassment she’s apparently enduring— that’s a problem. If she willfully continues to use social media, full well knowing the risks and consequences that come with it, then that’s also a problem.

In my view, social media absolutely should be 18+ only. It’s not only extremely harsh and has the potential to cause mental harm, but also can be life-ruining in situations where the user posts something that goes viral in a negative way. With employers and colleges both increasingly adding social media use to background and/or character checks, keeping kids off of social media keeps them from making that “big mistake” that can’t be undone.

Aren't most Smash players underage? Aren't underage people horrible to each other?

if she just stuck to the social media accessible on the same device she plays the game on, she wouldn't have this problem. because THERE IS NONE. because they know their audience has a lot of young kids that don't need that shit.

Nintendo did what they could to try to protect her. it's her own fault for going to Twitter, reddit, and wherever else

yeah i kind of agree w you. that photo above could have been innocently taken but is not something she should be sending out to the entire world, especially with her level of fame, and she's probably too young to know that.

This seems a bit overdramatic. Was it just the single win? If she blew up far past the achievement, then I wouldn't be surprised that other players feel unfairly treated and trying to downplay it (this is like human nature and a natural part of human behavior in most places, like work and sports). It's kind of like beating Magnus Carlsen at chess one time and making it seem like you're da bomb. Doesn't mean you're not decent or good, but the sensationalism often makes other people feel overlooked, especially since sensationalist aspects are focused on. (A GIRL! Oh noes! 15! Oh noes! You see this in the chess world as well, but everyone knows that what separates the top from the rest is your overall performance. Not that there aren't examples of misogyny, like what Judit Polgar experienced). That said, while they're allowed to be pissy, it just makes them look bad and there's really nothing they can do to stop sensationalism. They'd do better just by outdoing her. But pissy attitudes are pretty typical in sports and even amongst professionals people tend to have feuds and grievances.

Do we have documentation (audio/video or witnesses) or example of said harassment? If it's just people being salty, then she will not be able to function in most competitive environments, so probably good to quit ahead. From that tweet it seemed like she disliked the overall attention more.

I don’t have enough information to speak to the first question, but as to the second— yes, middle/high school-age kids can be especially brutal to each other. The problem with social media is that the abuse and harassment that starts in a place like school (or a video game tournament) can now continue unabated.

I know this happened a lot at the middle school level when I worked in one a couple of years ago, and it kept the resource officer busy.

I only said that because we were all kids once and other kids were fucking terrible. In person.

Are there any concrete details?
Was she being harassed, attacked, doxxed, being sent nasty messages? by how many people?
Or was it more like the community just downplaying her win as a fluke?

The snippet in the OP makes it sound like it could have been anything from lots of people coming after her to a bunch of people on a forum being like "nah, she just got lucky she isn't that good"

I would just laugh at them and tell them they suck if I beat you.
Whatever happened to being a good sport? Sorry I forgot it’s the internet where most strangers are A holes to each other.

Doubt that's what really happened. They're probably spinning it so that she's the victim and the bad guys are all straight white male gamers. Now what does that remind me of hmm...

ITT: People who don't seem to have been harrassed repeatedly online before

Also ITT: Conspiracy theorists

What is there to doubt? I've been PC gaming for 25+ years and the last 23 of them have been online, since 2001 in specific with a microphone.

I've dealt with targeted harassment, name calling, being berated for playing a certain way or doing something in a game that people didn't like. This has extended to forums and messaging services, MSN Messenger, xFire, Steam etc.

What bubble do you live in kid? This is just the way things are, like this isn't something special. Oh it's a 15 year old trans guy so let's make a big deal out of a common occurrence, I mean give me a fucking break.

I mean, there is a lot of sexual content and aggressive people who like to harrass others (largely due to anonymity) on social media. Though, I'm not sure if there is really a way to avoid it as the internet and social media are becoming necessary in these times for people to get information and work. These devices are capturing our devoted attention, like they are sucking our souls.

I was fortunate enough to realize why I was being bullied at a youngish age and I changed my behavior to stop it by the end of middle school.

I kept my head down in high school and moved two hours away for college, far enough away to reset my social life.

Unfortunately it's hard to do that when you're internet famous. You might not even be doing anything to invite bullying, you're just widely available on the internet.

It *is* possible to use the internet and avoid putting yourself in the line of fire from potential harassers.

Social media participation is unnecessary, for starters. In the worst-case scenario, where one thinks that information can only be obtained that way, you create dummy accounts with generic/false identity info that you never post on and simply lurk.

Otherwise, there are enough other places to lurk that don’t require personal or any other login info. Sure, you can’t post anything, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Any place that does require login info should be treated the same— no real identity information.
