last game you gave up on

Everybody's Gone to the Rapture. Got it free on PS+, actually fell asleep playing this boring walking simulator.

Brilliant game. But you're right in saying that games picked up on PSN (and GamePass) tend to decrease motivation to play. The idea of being able to play so many games is appealing but in reality it just means you have little motivation to actually continue if you don't instantly like it.

Sekiro, made it to the two apes and gave up.
This and honestly Gears 5 might be next. That boss at the end of Act 2 was terrible (it was hard but it's just a bad fight) and after a few hours I'm not feeling the game much anyway.

People are mentioning Cuphead so I'll throw in on that as well. Game is boring as hell, but it's pretty. Art style can't save a bad game though.

Never played WoW back in the day so decided to see what all the hype was about. Played for about 1 week before the boredom became too much. I have no idea what people see in that game. :messenger_confused:

I gave up on Nioh its an amazing game but I got to a point where i just realized brutal games have to take a back seat for a while, life is too insane for me atm just to finally get home and beat my head against a wall due to a tough boss fight.

I didnt even buy seirko because I dont want to spend money on a game that ends up taking a lot of time to learn and master when I only have a few hours a week to play.

Feel exactly like this with any souls like game. I do enjoy them but is not a type of game you pick for a bit to relax. I hope to go back to Nioh although now it's been so long I feel like I would have to start from the beginning again...
It was when I realized that crafting was an essential part of the game that I became overwhelmed and stopped

I cry about SonyGaf from my chair in Redmond, WA
Dragons dogma. Boring combat and environment.

About to give up on mad max as well. Combat is too simple and the missions are just the same as well.

Fire Emblem Three Houses.

I hate running around the stupid monastery asking around for who dropped their item. The persona inspired relationships stuff isn’t interesting at all to me, while it didn’t bother me in those games. Over half the game is that and I hate it here.

Absolute chore of a game. I just want to do battles and have some light story.

It’s on my shelf and I’ll try again down the road sometime.

This is exactly why I was hesitant to buy this game and still haven't.

Going to try my friends copy when he's done with it, but idk.

I should make my backlog my own list of gave up on. I have at least 20+ that I know I should play that I will enjoy or I should finish. When I had no money I would enjoy my games a lot but these days I can only play one or two games and if I try to play anything else I will play for one or two sessions, if I can't finish in this time I just give up.

I really tried playing it several time just to be sure I was not in a bad mood when I gave up on it. Same thing, got bored with it in a matter of minutes, and simply just stop.

I don't think being a "free" game from PS+ should be the cause as to why I gave up on it. I got Mad Max for free on PS+, played it once, found it surprisingly good and engaging, got me hooked for hours, and managed to get Platinum trophy.

Ah, it's probably just not your type of game then. No harm in that.

I go the opposite way in struggling with open-world action games. I used to play them a lot but find my brain is now trained to take in information at a much slower rate. Basically, I love slow burners. Same with games, books and movies.

I very rarely give up on any game and tend to see them through to the end but very recently I tried Unravel due to having EA Access and had to delete it after 10 minutes. I'm sure it's a lovely game but I just can't do with those platformers that have floaty, loose-feeling mechanics.

Almost gave up on River City girls. That boss fight with Hibari was ridiculous and had no reason to be in a beat ‘en up game.

Finally got her though

This sub par System Shock 2 clone solidifies my belief that Arkane's sole purpose is to be the value brand version of Looking Glass.
The hacking is a joke, the soundtrack is grating and annoying just like the DOOM soundtrack (Fight me), and the mimics morphing into objects become less of a threat and more of an annoyance.

Play Solarix if you wanna play something System Shock inspired but good.

S.U.N.K C.O.S.T

They've spent too much time playing that. They'are like a dog with a bone.

As for myself: Far Cry 3.
Played the console version of the game in the console until getting near to the end then I've dropped that. Then I've bought the PC version during a sale. Played a few hours and then I've shelved it for 6 YEARS.

Then last week I've decided to finish that for good. Today is the day I've finished that. Game deleted from the HD drive.

Yeah I didn't like it either. Arkane's games feel aimless to me and Dishonored 2 is my least favourite game this generaton.

I love the UI and typography though (Prey that is).

Gran Turismo Sport. It made me accept the fact that Polyphony Digital will never again make a GT game I want, one without all the stupid, overwrought bullshit that gets in the way of just racing a fucking car. That game at launch did everything it could to stop you from racing. It had no actual single player races at release. You could do licenses tests, repeating the same short sections of track over and over again, but not run actual laps of the full track. Why tease players with a sisyphean struggle like that? And you could race PvP only when the game fit you into its schedule. The whole thing felt like modern art or a Kafka-esque social experiment. It was, at launch, at racing game that lacked racing.

Too many. I think it's down to not having enough time thus new games come out so I just end up buying the next best thing. It's a bad habit to get into.

Sekiro. Not having the online friend helper crutch to carry me along really hurt. I did power through the true ending path, then hit a brick wall trying to beat Owl v2 back at the Hirata Estate. I'd try him for a while, give up and go try the Demon of Hatred where I'd do even worse. I'm fairly certain I can beat the game if I spend like 6+ hours on each fight. I feel like the long load times are the real trial though. It's such a long wait between attempts. I eventually left it in my backlog folder and then FFXIV:Shadowbringers came out and ate up (and continues to do so) the majority of my leisure time.

X-Com2.

I loved the first one, but the second was too hard for me.

In normal mode? You could save scum it. It's worth playing if you like strategy. I played through it recently with the war of the chosen expansion and the additional classes also make it easier.

I made it pretty far in, then the random high level dudes would start spawning and wreck me. I beat one or two and would do a ton of reloads... then just realized I wasn't having fun and moved on to something else.

feel like i am in a give up/come back to it in a week cycle with Nioh. cool game, just way too long and prone to get absurdly frustrating at points.

I gave up once I “beat” the game, and then the game is like good job! Now fight all the bosses again, but they’re harder now or you fight two at a time.

Dragon Quest 11. Gave up after I got a boat and was introduced to random battles and quests that forced me to go back on forth of the water from one end of the map to the other. Considering you can avoid unnecessary battles in the rest of the game the boat became extremely annoying especially when each new quest just happens to be on the other side of the world. Not to mention there is one character on my team who is just super annoying who I cannot get rid of. I was really enjoying the game up until then.

Fire Emblem: 3 Houses. I didn't like the calendar stuff and limited action points. No matter how much time the game gives you, I hate being limited by an overall clock or counter. Same reason I never finished Majora's Mask, Lightning Returns, the early Atelier games etc. The only game I pushed on through it despite that was Persona 5, for some reason.

Forza Horizon 4 (same as with 3 last time).
I just can't. The driving is fine and graphics are great but the constant "it's your festival!" ass licking is just mind boggling.
It feels like You play a douche king in world surrounded by slaves. Everyone gives You sport cars and everything is around You and "THE FESTIVAL".
I don't know why I exactly have a problem with this but it's super tiresome and annoying.
Also - repetitiveness, busy work of driving everywhere and You cannot even change a car anywhere You want for free. That + all the cool cars are locked behind paid dlc. I wanted to like these games but it's too off putting. Maybe being 30yo is too old for this style of game :p

Sounds a lot like Dragon Quest VIII which I also stopped playing.

Ah, I suppose the trick is to either be way over leveled or to replay a big part of a level after you know how it's going to go. If you already played through most of the campaign it's more of the same so maybe it was the natural stopping point. It is fun later on to style on enemies with your max level skills but also maybe not worth playing through it again. Finishing games is overrated when there are 100 other games to play.

Another hand up for Sekiro. Ioved Souls, Bloodborne, still play Nioh, but Sekiro is too hard. I do not think I ever was able to wrap my head around the core combat. Practiced against the zombie trainer over and over, but I just can't get with it. It seems to be based on parrying and precision timing. I stuck with it for a while. Realized if I was having this much trouble with common enemies, I have no hope against a boss. And there is no coop or summoning help...so that's my sad tale.

Persona 5. I was 60 hours in and felt it was too bloated.

The game basically blew in load in the first 30 hours and then lost its focus.

FH2 was the worst about this with the Seth Green wannabe interacting with you everywhere

Played FF VII a few months ago, near the end before you fight the last boss there is this area that takes like 2 hours two fight through and right as I was about to reach the end I died. Didn't feel like replaying those 2 hours again and will probably never finish FF VII. I play games for fun and that just stresses me out. That said looking forward to the new FF VII remake though.

Loved the main quest line, didn't like much else though. And that epilogue at the end was boring as hell.

Control even one simple mistake a regular enemy can take 90% life and you die easily. Boss battle checkpoint are worst, finnaly gave up. Quantum Break combat was miles better.

Yep, Red Dead Redemption 2.

It's just a bad game, i.e. where the sum of its parts don't come together & the bad outweighs the good. What's good? The horse-riding is IMO okay, with the horse reactions & physics working well (certainly far better than Assassin's Creed Odyssey or Witcher 3 in the horse riding parts). I also like the guns & their feedback (with the caveat being auto aim must be disabled first). Manual aim is a lot easier (i.e. I can control which enemy I shoot first instead of the game guiding me into difficulty) & it's a lot more satisfying. The graphics are also excellent on base ps4, with the image quality (no real ugly aliasing) making the landscape far more visually impressive on that console than other open world games. Even though the framerate in towns is criminal.

What's bad? Arthur's movement (he controls like a tank & struggles to open cupboards or pick up loot). The "cores" are imbecilic nonsense. The inability to carry more than one pelt or animal carcass (for realism sake) is complete imbecility considering Arthur can carry a completely comical & impossible number of bottles. The story & characters are absolute SHIT. Their presentation is very professional & Hollywood-esque, but the actual plot itself is disgusting hypocritical shit whereby a bunch of travellers with a hatred of America preach "morality" whilst murdering, stealing & acting like total shitbags. F Arthur, F Dutch, F them all. They're so whingy, nihilistic & disgusting I couldn't stand listening to their bullshit for another minute (special mention to the gang who give Arthur all sorts of bad attitude... whilst he's the only one giving the camp huge amounts of money). None of this has any impact on a story which is determined to deconstruct 19th century America & give these characters the right to lecture me. F off Rockstar.

Oh & special mention goes to the "Arthur gets anal raped by a homo rapist" side quest. Great stuff. It's like the devs were laughing in my face whilst playing their shitty game.

Yeah I agree with most of this. Especially the "cores" stuff - any game that forces you to constantly search for and consume massive quantities of food or you'll immediately starve to death like it's the fucking Sims has never been my idea of a good time. Didn't like it when Metal Gear Solid introduced those mechanics in Snake Eater and haven't changed my mind since.
