Resident Evil: Revelations - Seventh Review: Eurogamer - 8/10

Alexios

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
They'll probably leave the score the same, or add a single point, but rewrite parts of it to acknowledge the existence of things like the multiplayer modes to look like they took all that under consideration when deciding the verdict so that people have less things to bitch about. It won't exactly reflect well on the website but yeah, it's not like people will remember it. Or maybe they want it to be print exclusive for a while and put it online by accident or there's an embargo or whatever.

Why has segmented gameplay became such a problem all of a sudden? In RE4, everything was spread out. Same with RE5

Code Veronica was the last RE that really had only a few but huge areas that you explored

I was surprised how early it went up tbh. Surely there would be an embargo? No other major UK sites seem to have a review up. I doubt if the score will change though.

Err... what?

I thought the tone fit the series perfectly well. It felt more like Resident Evil 3 than, well, Resident Evil 3 did. It was obvious which one began as a 'gaiden' and which one was actually intended to be the sequel.

I was under the impression it had long been accepted that the only reason Code Veronica wasn't called Resident Evil 3 was because of politics.

RE3 is a much, much better game than Code: Veronica, though. The story is better, the gameplay is better, it's got much better atmosphere, WAY more replay value, and it has The Mercenaries.

RE 3: Nemesis had a Mercs mode?

I don't remember that...

I dunno, I like the sound of the game being broken into smaller chapters. Isn't this what people always ask for when traditional console games are released on handhelds?

Personally, yeah that's exactly what I want. And with games like Metroid Fusion/Zero Mission, SH Origins, ghost of sparta or Mario Kart it is more than evident, that this bite sized design approach isn't really interfering on the games quality at all.

I guess the preconception that game design suited for portables is inherently inferior to stationary consoles will haunt us for another 10 years. So many people not giving handheld games a chance out of principle.

He also complains about a lack of enemy variety, lackluster boss battles, uninspired combat(lack of strategy to kill enemies) and no true sparks of brilliance.

Sounds like a lot more than just complaining about segmented gameplay.

I'm excited about this game, but I'd definitely like to hear more reviews to see if these valid complaints are a common theme.

The developer blog mentioned it's somewhere between 10 and 16 hours, based on player skill. But I'd say 10 hours is a pretty good estimate for a first playthrough.

Don't know, shirtless Chris always seemed weird to me. Something wrong about his torso... 8/

Based on player skill and whether the player decides to go through reading all of the files and such, I think.

15 - 30 minutes for RE4 chapters as well? Or am I reading you wrong? Maybe my memory is off but I remember spending more than that on certain chapters, although I'm one of those players who takes their time.

I meant the RE4 chapters were the same length as each other, while the chapters in 5 and most likely REV will be variable in length, and overall shorter.

These days I try to get the most out of my games, so I'll take the game as being 15+ hours.

People who are skilled, speedy, and skip all the side content really tend to misrepresent the actual potential playtimes of games. Some folks were saying that Zelda: Skyward Sword was a 25-30 hour game. For me, it's been double that so far and I'm not even finished.

Heck, in terms of Resident Evil, there were people saying that they beat RE4 in 15 hours. That's about the time it took me with my New Game+, where my first play-through was at nearly 28 hours. To some, REmake was 6-8 hours, for me it was about 12.

If the low-ball estimate for RE: Revelations is 10 hours, then I'm going to, personally, take the high-ball number as the one that represents my likely time spent with the game.

Thats usually how I judge it, too.

I'm like you in that I like to really take my time and get the maximum value out of a game. Especially if I'm really enjoying it.

Other people I think have a desperate need to play every game they can, so feel some need to rush through things a bit to make sure they have time to play other stuff.

You can't tell right now, but I'm whistling in a surprised/for real? type of tone.

I do have a case of bed head right now. But my hair is fine normally.

RE4 took me 28 hours (first run, Normal), 16 (New Game+), 9 (Chicago Typewriter run), and 22 (Pro Mode). That was all in the GC version.

When that memory card got corrupted, I bought the Wii version and sunk many hours into that one as well. 19 hours (Normal), 17 (Pro), then 10 (Pro NG+). And then there are the hours I spent on the extra content as well, in order to unlock everything.

RE4 was a LONG game, and for me it was even longer than it was for the average player because I spent a lot of time taking in the environments, planning strategies, and looking for all the secrets that I could possibly find. Looking back, that game was a real fucking indulgence.

Interestingly enough, RE5 was a game where the low-ball estimate (8-10 hours) was just about right for me, but that game was much less rewarding than RE4 so as a player I wasn't inclined to spend more time than necessary to complete the main campaign. I haven't read any of the in-depth impressions of RE: Revelations, but if the press happen to say that it's more in line with RE5 than RE4 in terms of content, then that might go against my reasoning for gauging the game's length based on the high-ball estimate.

Ah OK. Thanks for clearing that up.

Also spend a lo of time on RE4, RE5 I just wanted to get it over with. Hope RE:R has more player incentives.

Product from the Capcom-Unity forums has released some snippets from the Nintendo Power review:

Nintendo Power issue 275
9.0 out of 10
Reviewer: Steve Thomason

Some review snippets I found interesting...

- The cruise ship in the Mediterranean "proves to be the most discomforting since the original RE mansion"
- "The game made me jump with embarrassing regularity while playing in a bright lit office"
- Big focus on exploration and scrounging for items and health
- Main focus is the ship with side plots that require you to play as different characters
- These side plots move much faster (more action) than the main story on the ship
- Game runs in episodes much like a TV series
- "couple of neat plot twists"
- "The big conspiracy at the center of the game never quite managed to hook me"
- No surprise appearances (Jill and Chris are the only old characters to return)
- About 10 hours to complete
- Raid Mode is more focused and more compelling multi player than Mercenaries 3D
- Raid Mode has more "staying power than Mercenaries"
- Same control scheme as Mercenaries
- Use your thumb on the touch screen to activate some fingerprint locks
- StreetPass enables you to receive special rewards for use in both multi and single player modes
- Genesis Bioscanner is a "nifty addition to the RE formula, and something we hope to see expanded upon in the future"
- Production values are great. CGI cinematics and soundtrack are great. "Hard pressed to think of even a Wii game that seems to have as many resources poured into it"
- Underwater is not "nearly as frustrated as it is in most games"

Ending statement:
"If Revelations isn't the best reason to own a Nintendo 3DS right now, it's pretty darn close. The game is a showcase for what the handheld is capable of and a potent reminder of why Resident Evil remains one of the medium's most celebrated franchises."

That's basically what he's saying though, isn't it? MK7 and SM3DL are in effect the best reasons to own the console, and Revelations is pretty darn close.

I think he means Pushmo/Pullblox

Reading it for the second time, I guess you're right. Aargh, you remind me that i'm still stuck on a puzzle and I refuse to read any hints.... :(

The Nintendo Power review sounds great but I imagine the underwater sections will be as bad as they are in most games. Also no RE story has gripped me since RE2 where it was about ordinary people stuck in a horrible situation. These days the characters are always super secret agents who are more or less equipped to handle monsters and zombies.

I think the only one that was way longer than the others was 3-1. Seemed to be one swarm room right after another.

Not actually that important
Yeah, I'm personally just biting the bullet on this one and get the italian version instead which costs 20 bucks more but I'm holding it in my hand on launch day, instead of having to fear that my package might arive some 5 months later.

Heads up: it's not 20 bucks more, it's more like €10. Amazon.it is selling the frankenstick bundle for €45, or just the game for €37. I usually get my games from Amazon.it on either launch day or day 2, tops.

is it known if the game had to be cut for EU(or germany)?
I saw the PEGI 16 and "FSK ab 16 Jahren" sticker on PAL boxes and it made me grumble.
I mean, RE Mercs for 3DS is 18+. I can't see Revelations being any less "brutal" or gory.

I already mailed capcom about that but they didn't even reply yet(email sent a week ago).

Maybe that's because in Mercenaries you shoot enemies that look like humans but in Revolution you shoot mutants.

As far as I know, Capcom is working very closely with the USK to ensure no cuts are made to any of their games. If you want to be absolutely sure, you should buy from an Austrian shop.

Sorry but Code veronica has better story ;)

RE3 is only about Jill scream and destruction of Raccoon City. Code veronica is the full introduction to new Umbrella branch and co-founder , Ashley family.
