Identifying Lincoln.

Yep, it's Lincoln.

It seems ridiculous that this is coming out in two months and we still know hardly anything about it and haven't seen a single piece of footage.

Not really. It's not a blockbuster. We know a lot about the film, despite having not seen a trailer.

It's a movie directed by one of the most talented directors of all time, starring a guy who is widely considered to be the greatest actor alive, about one of the most important figures in American history. A movie that's been highly anticipated for over a decade now. We got more than enough samples of War Horse months in advance, and nobody gave a shit about that.

it's an adaptation of a very widely read book--A Team of Rivals.

I'm aware, but that's pretty much the only thing we've been told.

ABOUT THE MOVIE
Steven Spielberg directs two-time Academy Award® winner Daniel Day-Lewis in “Lincoln,” a revealing drama that focuses on the 16th President’s tumultuous final months in office. In a nation divided by war and the strong winds of change, Lincoln pursues a course of action designed to end the war, unite the country and abolish slavery. With the moral courage and fierce determination to succeed, his choices during this critical moment will change the fate of generations to come.

Starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field, David Strathairn, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, James Spader, Hal Holbrook and Tommy Lee Jones, “Lincoln” is produced by Steven Spielberg and Kathleen Kennedy, with a screenplay by Tony Kushner, based in part on the book “Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln” by Doris Kearns Goodwin. The DreamWorks Pictures/Twentieth Century Fox film, in association with Participant Media, releases in U.S. theaters exclusive on November 9, 2012, with expansion on November 16, 2012.

Daniel Day Lewis better nail the high pitched, shrill voice that Lincoln actually had. For me, that's one of the most unexplored and misconstrued elements of Lincoln's actual physicality.

None of that Hall of Presidents stuff, please.

A Google + Hangout?

Damn it.

JGL will be all over the media for seemingly 4-5 straight months due to his 4 films in 5 month span. Can't think of a more enthusiastic actor in Hollywood though. Late night people must be getting tired of his interviews.

a true golden opportunity was missed with Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure.

Also, I will probably never forgive Spielberg if he fucks this up.

I don't think a Spielberg film has drawn this much (positive) Oscar speculation in a decade.

You might mention War Horse but a lot of people got turned off by its' trailer, and wrote it off as Oscar bait that just might win. Lincoln on the other hand seems to be talked about as Oscar bait that will probably deserve to win. Dat DDL effect.

Edit: There was Munich of course. But a DDL Lincoln movie is on a whole different level.

The thing about Munich is that all it's Oscar talk came after people saw it and not before. Lincoln has had Oscar talk since he first announced he wanted to do it. This Google+ hangout bullshit sounds stupid as hell. Just give me the fucking trailer.

Don't see what the big deal is. It shouldn't be too long after that before the trailer gets uploaded everywhere else, right?

Holy hell, the pic in the OP is the first time I've seen DDL without facial hair, I seriously had to stare for 5 mins before seeing it. Guy literally transformed with his mustache roles, but even his Lincoln beard is incredible. Best facial hair ever

Won't stop picking the right nation
I hadn't realized until now that the actor who portrayed Edward R. Murrow in Good Night, and Good Luck also stars as Seward in Lincoln. Strathairn has a way of projecting intelligence and gravitas as well as any actor I've seen.

Anyway, I think we can infer a few things about the movie from this interview. First, Strathairn's quote about Seward representing an "amalgamation" of several different characters, and the notable absence of Salmon Chase from the cast list, has me worried that we won't see the treasury secretary at all, which would be a huge loss, I think, but would probably allow Spielberg to focus exclusively on the interesting relationship between Seward and Lincoln.

Second, Strathairn says that the movie starts in 1864. This is confirmed by the soundtrack list, which begins with the events leading to Lincoln's second inauguration.

Third, this movie is exactly what I wanted it to be: a political drama. According to Stratharin:

Between that arc, you see a very complex stew of political machinations going on. Obviously the Civil War is a backdrop. They don't indulge in the Civil War aspects, the blood and horror of the war. It's about this man's plowing through the heavy seas of trying to get the amendment passed, and all that it meant to him deeply and psychologically, as well as publicly and politically.

The passage of the Emancipation Proclamation and then the 13th ammendment distills the essential qualities of Lincoln's genius and therefore deserves to become the focus of the entire film.

He looked even better at the Academy Awards a few years ago.

Here is a pretty good article on Lincoln's voice.

“Lincoln’s voice, as far as period descriptions go, was a little shriller, a little higher,” says Holzer. It would be a mistake to say that his voice was squeaky though. “People said that his voice carried into crowds beautifully. Just because the tone was high doesn’t mean it wasn’t far-reaching,” he says.

DDL really does have the sharp facial structure and larger nose to sell Lincoln. I'm still very curious what Neeson's performance would have been like but always found it a bit odd a non-American would portray the Savior of the Union, Father Abraham, etc. Not trying to be anti-foreign or whatever but just saying it was an interesting initial choice.

DDL is British as well.

If you told me that voice was DDL I wouldn't believe you. Do we know if Spielberg is targeting an R rating for this?
