Man the story mode is so nonsensical XD I rather they had not tried and simply done CGI endings for every character. The timeline is a cluster fuck and the dialogue is awful. It isn't so bad it's good it's just plain shit, could get better as I just started as Ryu but I'm not holding out hope. The gameplay on the other hand is amazing, love the visuals and the modes serve me well. Not even having the online troubles like most of you guys but then again Ive only played 5 matches.

I disagree on almost every point about the story. I hated the way CGI endings in previous entries prior to DOA Dimensions had nothing to do with whatever the a) main story of the game was or b) Anything that just happened prior. DOAD was actually the first time I was able to make any real sense of the overall story of the series, or even understand who the canonical winner of each DOA was. I much prefer that Team Ninja continues on with the story in the vein of these last two titles.

The timeline of DOA5 is pretty easy to understand, IMO. Horizontal movement denotes changes in character, and vertical movement denotes progression through time. I didn't think it was that hard. Maybe I'm just used to it from games like Odin Sphere.

All that said, I think they could've done better with much of the moment-by-moment aspects of the story, such that we weren't jumping around quite so much, or that there were more sensible reasons for people to be fighting each other outside the tournament than "You tried to eat my dumpling!" (except truly, there is no more honorable reason to fight over).

As for so bad it's good, sometimes it truly is. Sometimes it's just bad, but I still love it anyway.

The one stage in the demo has more interactive elements than any stage in DOA4. Weather its bright or colorful is one thing, but these are the most interactive stages ever in DOA.

Yeah, totally don't get this. On one stage I can knock somebody into a steam pipe, from which steam will spew, if I do it again, they'll fall down to another level (after we see pipes and fences and shit fall down). When I knock them to the bottom of this level, there are a bunch of oil refinement...things. I knock my opponent into this, it explodes, it causes a chain reaction, and eventually the entire level is on fire. And in the background, useless sprinklers activate, helpess to stop the blaze.

This is just one level.

Gameplay wise the levels in DOA5 offer a lot more than any game before. I would have liked to have seen slopes return though, just for the cool ass throw animations.

Is there really anything to get in the story? It's extremely barebones and anything other than the ninjas and
--Rig--
is basically filler.

The 30% drop chance on Legend costumes is one heck of a bad idea. Not fun.

It's not 30 it's 0%.

You have to win every match. I did this by mashing back p+K with hayabusa. Charge it to mix it up.

Lisa's is literally impossible to get though. On Survival you have to beat every single hard mode to 100 before being able to compete in legendary mode. Fuck that shit Team Ninja.

You say that now but i'm sure a lot of people would be more angry at them not having this than having it and it not fitting some people needs. It could have been a lot better but it does its job just like mk9 story mode its something there for those that want it.

I can vouch for that. I did the same with Hayabusa and it worked.

I won't bother with Lisa at the moment

Starting to at least kind of know what I'm doing in this game. Played 10 ranked matches today in the F+ to D- range and I won 8 :p currently on a 4 streak. I'm still very much in the mediocre range still. Gonna try to play at least 10 a day and do 20 or more on days where I have the free time. But I just cannot find any people to play physically next to in my town or even a tourney I can drive to.

Anyone here finding success online?

I MUCH prefer the MK9 format but this game just didn't do it well in my opinion. Ridiculous story aside, the biggest gripe I had was that the story was told TERRIBLY. Stick with chronological order, Team Ninja!

3 DAYS LATER, followed by

5 DAYS EARLIER, followed by

2 1/2 HOURS LATER 2 FLOORS UP ON BUILDING A

MK9 dealt with timelines but the story itself was told from start to finish in linear fashion.

Also worth noting that MK used stages that made sense in the context of the world , the first part of the game all happened on the island , the second part was all in various bits of out world and finally the 3rd part took place largely in the metropolis infested by outworld. In past DOA's if they did the little character cutscenes in game they made a point to have them take place in stages that kind of worked. This is also why I probably hate that oilrig stage so much- half the game happens there to try and keep larger parts of the story somewhat coherent.

EDIT probably worth pointing out that if my earlier estimate proves accurate- doa5 cost only 15-20% what Mortal Kombat had behind it, more money means better everything really. I don't think doa5 got the shaft compared to past doa games , it's just they had a younger team and a newer engine that forced them to rebuild it all from scratch as best they could. Doa2-4 , as I've already established were generally built by the same guys with the same engine just being re-used and re-worked. This is why I look forward to a DOA6 because I think they'll have sorted out the issues by then.

You found the story in DOA5 difficult to comprehend, lol? Timelines are tricky and all, but everything was told cohesivley.

I'm having problems with Sarah's no. 97 command training, "while stepping forward" what does that mean ? How can I go to this stance ? :|

yeah, someone tell Shimbori that Lisa's 1K shouldn't knockdown on hit, it should just stun. i can work with that!

Even with that she was still joke tier in 4, by changing 1k they've actually made her worse despite giving her a new stance (useless) and giving her more back turn options (useless, in fact it's more useless than 4 because you no longer need it for max juggle height). She needs her old 1k back and she should be given Godlike side-step attack along with amazing tracking on her moves because jesus, if there was a clear way to give a bad character strong tools you'd think giving them some of the best options in the new system you implement might be a bleeding obvious way to do so.

ff P+K is her step forward stance

press b from it to go backwards.
Aha, thanks ! finished her command training.
Used her basic attacks in VF and that was more than enough. :p

I'm receiving so many "Throwdowns" messages, it shows my name for anyone searching for simple matches, right ?

I don't know how can you prioritize the group of players that want story out of DOA. They didn't implement a real story mode until Dimensions and I'm betting most of the fanbase skipped on that since it was portable. Story mode was totally unnecessary for the guys that spend most of their time playing matches online or goofing off in Tag mode. And for those who bought DOAX, I don't think story was what they had in mind.

Any tips for Sarah Edge Kick Combo (In Flamingo Stance)
p down kkk but it only seems to do the first 2 hits.

I got everything except that move.

Edit: Got it.

I still cant find info on character strategies. I really don't want to spend money on a guide since I've already spent a lot of money.

Speaking of character strategies, what's an ideal way of discovering combo strings in training mode? Setting the computer to guard on reaction?

New game and new engine makes info very difficult.

This would be your best place outside the guide.

Having trouble with Hitomi's 7 and 10 hit combos after stun. How!?

down fowrward kick punch , punch, forward p+K, forward p+K (you'll cause a critical burst at this point) launch with up forward kick, up back pk, pp forward pk.

I heard that (according to some xbox achievement tracking site) 3 or so people have got Lisas bikini.
I'd love to know how they did it, if its true. as it is, its just overwhelmingly difficult. The best outfit in the game and no one gets to use it? lol. good job TN.

All this hate for the story mode... Personally I thought it was great. :/

Looking forward to the DLC. Hopefully one of the other costumes actually includes a character that I play as.

Seriously, is story really THAT important in a fighting game? Personally, I liked the story, but I see so many people saying they loathe it. I feel that it was at least as good, if not better than the one in MK9 which received fairly positive responses. Once you are done with it and you try to master your characters beating people up, most gamers forget about their backgrounds and stories anyway. Also, are people actually taking off points for the overall score for the game because they thought the story was nonsensical or unintelligible? That is just being plain petty imo.

The game sold %50 of its shipment in the first day in Japan, how big is it ? I don't know, but good news anyways.

Alpha-152
and blue color costume in Lab stage, you can't see her very well. @_@

This is pretty much how I feel. I'm not sure what this amazingly high bar people seem to have set for the story mode is, but I enjoyed DOA5's story more than any other fighter I've played (And besides Dissidia, I think I've played all the fighters with a story).

Oh well.

The story didn't ruin the game for me I just believe what they showed is no better than the CGI endings in previous DOA games, no doubt more time was spent on story cutscenes here and they should of not bothered; Done CGI endings and had more time to add extra stuff like more costumes or modes maybe.

Anyway I am loving the game, feels so good to play. Funny in my local GAME store the game wasn't even put on shelves, they must not think it would sell at all because I had to ask for it. The fact most people can't see the game when they walk in will definitely not help sales, could just be an isolated experience but then again UK games market is really terrible for sales.

Command Training is starting to piss me off. I'm already trying for half an hour to do a "Endless Zack Roll - Sway" with Zack, but it won't work. I had problems with all his "While Ducking" moves so far, but this one's easily the worst (so far).
Also, while I already completed Command Training for about 8 characters already, I'm still not sure what some of the symbols mean. For example, what's the difference between a solid and an empty arrow? Why are there sometimes small arrows on the button symbols? The game (or the manual) doesn't really bother to explain all those things.

anybody else have problems with P+H command with certain throws in command training?

i'm forced to use the throw button or it won't register.

also is there a button to reset stances? some games let you reset in training mode like KOF XIII and VF5. when i want to go back to the middle of the stage, for example.
