One month from today: BioShock Infinite

fine is one thing, i dont expect a 96 metacritic though

i did buy it, from gmg, on the strength of bioshock, and system shock 2

will wait for reviews.
bioshock 1 was nice, but nothing compared to its predecessors
bioshock 2 was underwhelming

Bioshock 2 was made by a totally different team if I remember correctly. Gunplay was better in 2 anyway, the first one was superior overall though.

Part of me really wants this game, but another part of me is just not feeling the hype anymore. I'll probably check it out down the road.

I bet your your hype will be resuscitated once the OT is up and the reviews start coming in.

Well, if the buzz is positive and some of my worries are alleviated, then I may give it a shot. I'll just have to wait and see. But as it stands, I am not chomping at the bit to play it.

I seriously worry this game is turning into Aliens: Colonial Marines.

Games that sit on the shelf too long spoil.

Levine recently tweeted that Bioshock 1 took 5 years to make and Infinite took 4.5. Bioshock 1 turned out okay.

There was also recently a thread about games that were in "development hell" and ended up great. Resident Evil 4, Metal Gear Rising, and Half-Life 2 were just a few of the examples. There were several more. Many more than examples of games that were truly ruined by development hell, such as Duke Nukem and Aliens.

We have been given a lot of insight into the development of this game that we don't get for most games. We know that Levine can be difficult to please, and he will cut content, even when it's nearly complete, if he doesn't think it is good enough. This results in longer development and also, theoretically, a better game.

All this information is out there, and I think it's sufficient to quell the worries that this game is any more likely to disappoint than any other AAA game.

Irrational needs a community manager (to post here), because the development hell narrative has really pervaded every thread about Infinite, and it doesn't seem like people are updating their perspectives based on the information we've gotten in the last few months.

If the game does turn out shitty, I'll revise my opinion.

And a pleasant surprise it turned out to be. I had previously believed that we didn't have enough examples of games with long development periods to draw conclusions about the effects on the quality of the final game, but it turned out there are many examples of great games born from a struggle.

Frankly, making something on the scale of a AAA game must be so difficult and iterative that we should applaud developers who cut things and start over, instead of playing backseat project manager and wishing they had just shoved whatever they finished out the door.

Indeed. Very surprising thread. Especially about the development of Prime. I was really shocked to see that that had gone through so much and ended up the way it did. I really hope Infinite is on the same road: despite the bumpy path, it still will lead to greatness.

If I ever post something in Japanese which I don't understand, please BAN me.
Watching all released Bioshock: Infinite videos now. Man the "Boys of Silence" will scare the living shit out of us, also how fast the "Handymen's" are.

THIS GAME.

So guesses on the code to unlock 1999 mode?

Personally I think it'll be 0451.

But how would you be able to input it?

I think some old school button code at the title screen would be pretty cool, but Irrational is more creative than that.

B2 was devoloped by Irrational, though.

This game is getting little push and I hope it does well, bt from what I have seen, it looks like it won't meet 2Ks standard (sales wise)

wat? no it was not.

Bioshock 2 was great. At first I was in the "unnecessary sequel" boat but the game did a nice job of going deeper into my favorite part of the lore: the big daddys and little sisters.
Then there's that part towards the end where
you get to play as a little sister and see the world through her eyes which was brilliant.
The whole theme of
the father/daughter relationship
also resonated more with me.
Then there's Minerva's Den which was fantastic and a great ending to the whole Rapture mythology.

The gameplay was also improved. The gunplay was tighter, you had dual wielding and a lack of lock picking minigames which was a super blessing.

I might just have to romp through Minerva one more time before Infinite releases.

I think he was replying to the guy to say it was not developed, hence the "but"

I think Bioshock 2 was actually a pretty good game. I think the reason I hated it was setting fatigue. Hopefully Infinite's Columbia feels nothing like Rapture in the sky.

Watching the opening walkthrough with Irrational on GS and it looks so absorbing! The world created with Columbia is truly unique and astonishing. If only this game was in third person. I may still get it because it definitely looks like a worthwhile experiene which I don't see from 99% of FPS games.

Also have you played Bioshock on PC? this game runs butter smooth and so will Infinite.
That's one of the worst PC ports ever made. It still doesn't work properly to this day.

You can't even use a mouse. Even Dark Souls: Prepare to Die without Durante's patch is a better port than BioShock.

What? I played it when it was released and used a mouse...not sure what you mean.

Really psyched about this. It has been a minute! I'll play on PC, although I don't guess I'll preorder unless they get that X-Com unlock deal going on Steam.

Recently replayed Bioshock 2(after replaying System Shock 2), hell of a game.

Try playing it now in a high resolution.

I just replayed it last summer and I had to plug in a controller to solve the puzzles because the mouse doesn't work outside of the first-person controls.

Let's not even get started on BioShock launching with one of the worst DRM configurations ever seen.

You can cancel a prepurchase on steam?

Yeah, as well as unused gifts that you've purchased: simply send a ticket to support (you'll need to create an account specifically for this purpose). After you've signed in, select Steam as the product, while for the category you want Purchases and Payments, followed by Pre-ordered Game. As long as your request is actioned before the release date (which will be of no concern as the game is still a month away; even Valve isn't that slow :p), you should get your refund, no questions asked.

Edit: As for who can help you get the game for $45, just ask in the Steam thread once you're ready.

He said Bioshock was a spiritual successor to System Shock 2, fuck him.

Well...he wasn't really wrong about that. It's just a hugely terrible game compared to SS2 and that's because they went out on purpose to dumb the game down for the console audience. I know you've seen this since you post in the SS2 OT but this is for everyone else. From the bioshock postmortem:

The spec of BioShock changed so much over the course of development that we spent the majority of the time making the wrong game- an extremely deep game, and at times an interesting one, but it was not a groundbreaking game that would appeal to a wide audience.

Another contributing factor to the late switch was that the game had been more or less proceeding according to plan throughout development, so there didn't seem to be any emergencies that needed intervention from higher levels of management. Milestones were completed, goals were met, development seemed to be proceeding uneventfully. But as the game neared alpha, key people began looked more closely and saw that BioShock wasn't on track to become an accessible and marketable game.

I'm going to marathon SS2 and Bio1&2 the weekend before this comes out. If I could figure out a way to legitimately get my hands on SS1, I would be a very happy person :D

So excited!

Yeah, actually, now that I remember, Bioshock is the only game in my steam list that doesn't work on my new computer.

No sound due to RealTek drivers. I did everything, running as admin, running in Windows "XX", editing the limits in the .INI, disabling my audio drivers, plugging my headphones into my front jack, creating an audio bridge, and several other suggestions on the Steam forums.

I'm glad I played it back when it came out.

.

That was my favorite part of the game. It would have been cool if the whole game was that, maybe the first few years of rapture turmoil. The last thing I wanted was a whole game of leaky pipes and crumbling pods.

The thing I hate about multiplats is what system to get it for this happens all the time I could even get it for my mac which has windows on it but the graphics card is a directx11 512mb card though but I so far preordered it for PS3 for now could get it for pc, ps3, or 360.

Debating on pre-ordering still...

I still need to power through MGR & FE: Awakening before I even think about this game... Not to mention the other March games coming out...

I need this game! In my veins now! Pre-ordered already and have full faith that it will be an amazing game
(I hope)

I decided to preorder through GMG. I probably should have waited for impressions but the deal was decent $46 for the Darkness II, Bioshock Infinite and Bioshock (already own). I also had $6 in GMG credit since the holiday sales. Hopefully, the development issues worked out in the end. Fingers crossed.

You get all the pre purchase tier rewards as well?

I might take advantage of that.

Preordered on Steam like a dummy. I totally forgot about Amazon's bonuses. :\

Couldn't be more excited though. BioShock definitely made me look at games differently, I hope Levine and the IG team can capture that magic again. I've been on blackout since the announcement, I hope so bad I'm not wrong about this.
