Halo 4 |OT2| TURBO

Yep. Playable, a pod of Surfaces to try it on.

Since I'm mostly invested in the fiction side at this point, is the storyline for Spartan Assault going to be more like Halo Wars level of relevance or is it going to have hooks into future games?

Still would love to know what happens to the Spirit of Fire. It's not too late to force Traviss to write an extra paragraph into Kilo-5 Book III.

It's very connected (not essential) and you might be pleased about some other developments regarding fiction.

:/
Don't need it personally, but it's really silly.

Are we really complaining about free games now? Is that where we're at?

No, we're complaining that 6 years later, multiple $10 map packs seems counter-intuitive, especially to any chance of a small but healthy multiplayer community.

Those maps should be free and should have been for a while now.

Sigh. This thing came up quite quickly, we will also have to look at playlists as a result. But come on.

Frank, and you can answer in any way, why is Spartan Assault not releasing on XBLA? Do you folks not like money?

And I know, corporate, Windows 8, new experiences etc. But XBLA sales have never been higher. Look at Minecraft, State of Decay.

I'd buy it day one on XBLA, without that, no interest, and I even have a Windows 8 laptop.

Edit: I get why there isn't an Android or iOS version, but an XBLA version would sell 100k copies easily if it was like 800 to 1600 MS points.

Come on? We've been complaining about the map pay-wall here on HaloGAF for years, about how it fractures the playerbase, if not makes certain maps appear very rarely in other than their dlc playlist.

So when 6 years later, Halo 3 gets a cool shot in the arm (if late coming, PS+ has been rocking free games and recent ones for a while now) it would be great if it was the whole package that people were getting, so that the map pack issue is removed for Halo 3 at least.
If anything, the people who don't already own Halo 3 are not very likely to buy all the map packs, so removing that hurdle is only a good thing from my perspective.

I'm saying this from both thinking it's good for the game itself and a good practice to have for legacy titles.

Edit: It's 2am so I'm heading to bed, I've been crunching at work recently, but Frank, I dunno, I say the above from a place of love for the game and belief of how best to foster the older titles (and the idea that content depreciates in value).
I hope I haven't frustrated you too much.

This is in no way a insult to you guys at 343.

But these map packs should have seen a permanent price cut now years ago and free at this time.

Especially if some of the best maps in the game are in the DLC packs (Midship, Citadel)

It is a microsoft mismanagement, free games on the other hand is great and I like this

Excellent, thanks. Will have to get my hands on a copy for Forward Unto Dawn at some point then.

You can't be making tons of cash from the map sales now, and given the possible new influx of players, even more maps to enjoy would definitely result in some new longer term players and possible sales of other Halo games.

Hey Frankie/whoever, I thought this might be interesting to some people about kids and their ideas toward Halo.

Anyway, I've said before, but I work with school age children at a daycare place. I talk to a lot of kids every day about video games(mostly Minecraft and Pokemon and stuff), but today it turned toward Halo talk. I asked if any of the kids saw E3 or the Halo trailer, they all said no.

So I described the trailer to them all and they were freaking out and then from there they were talking about what they wanted in the new Halo game.

Some stuff like "bigger scope on DMR!" and "More Tank and truck[Scorpion and Warthog] stuff!", "More sniper file missions!" They also wanted the option to vote as a team on colors for a match before the match like how we vote for maps. Like vote to be red, blue, green, purple, yellow, or whatever. Kind of a strange, but I thought it was interesting. Also, they all wanted ranks back like Halo 3. I was surprised, because they're all like 8-11 years old. Anyway, those were the most demanded. Except for the joke "bigger boobs" for Cortana, but whatever
KuGsj.gif

Then we moved on to Halo: Forward Unto Dawn. The three boys I was talking to were two nine year olds and one ten year old. All three had see FUD many times. Between them, they said they saw it 11 times. But they're kids so it could have been exaggerations, but whatever. All three of them absolutely adored the movie and want new ones made pretty much yesterday. They loved the teenager aspect and the badass MC vs Hunter fight. They all agreed the best part of the entire thing was during the training segment where Lasky and his team took off their helmets and set up the ambush with the FoF tag sensors thing.

It's not much, I know, but I thought it was kind of funny how kids pick up certain things from the games. They're not the target audience for Halo, I'm sure, but they sure do seem to make up a large part of sales.

It's probably the biggest reveal from the conference to me, so no I'm not complaining about that. I'm only talking about what's around the "regular" package, and how the community would benefit from having those things also available.

I really didn't think It would start such a big debate, though.

I always find it interesting what kids take away from games or movies. We often don't give them enough credit for what they spot or their opinion. One thing though they are in part a target demographic. Get them in now at the age of 10 and have them through until the age of 20 over the next 10 years of Halo.

I hate to draw the comparison but Star Wars has passed this second trilogy route already and yes it split the fan base but when you talk with younger kids they like different aspects and stick with the franchise from there.

Anyone up for testing the new iteration of Petrichor soon? I've added a bit more cover on the ground level to provide for some easier movement down there and I've also added shield doors to the lift entrances for CTF to prevent players from just jacking the flag and taking the lift.

However, it's now possible to drop down the lift back to the base due to the removal of the shield doors at the top of the lift. I might replace the man-cannons with honest to goodness gravity lifts, though, because they seem to have a bit too much lifting power and players get caught in the lift too often while dropping down. In order to cut down on the donging from the top area of the map each base also has a Scattershot they can use to clean up their lift exit.

The map is now also optimized for every gametype except for Grifball and Flood, though I may end up moving hills and extraction points later on.

Also new is a variant I call "Infinity Petrichor." SAWs and Scattershots spawn at each base. Concussion Rifle replaced by Incineration Cannon. Beam Rifle replaced by Binary Rifle. Each base gets a Gauss Hog, two Mantises, and a Wraith. The center has four Shade turrets and a neutral flipped Scorpion.

Yup, that's precisely why they're focusing on Palmer and limiting characters and events of the past games.

Look at Star Wars. More kids today know who Ahsoka Tano is than Boba Fett. I asked my cousins who are into Lego Star wars and the Clone Wars etc. And they don't even care or remember who Han Solo is.

So you can tell that there will be all kinds of different fans for Episode VII.

I'll play it! I loved the first iteration of the map.

I posted yesterday I think its awesome. Super excited, the technical core needed is there, now they just have to make good decisions and Halo will be back!

juices already said perfectly nice things about those features.

edit: fartknockers. This new fangled "working" GAF is too fast.

Ah, halfway to BELI343ing. I can't lie, part of the reason I'm sticking with xbone is Halo. 60 fps and dedis sealed the deal. I BELI343!!

That's borderline criminal.

I wonder how LAN support will work for Xbox One, the 24 hour check in and DRM overall will make running large tournaments with Xbox One titles extremely challenging.

Hopefully Halo 5 still supports split screen and LAN, but I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't.

What you did there...it has been seen.

I'd be down to test. Don't know if that will give you useful data as I've been dropping -10s all day.

The free game is a fine gesture and totally cool for everyone who missed the Halo 3 boat and takes up the offer and wants to hop online with it, but looking at where it could benefit people who already own the game and DLC, the non-DLC playlists are populated enough. I'd probably suffer the terrible FOV if I could find more people in the DLC maps y'know? Then consolidate the playlists and require DLC in all of them, as anyone could simply download 'em.

I wouldn't mind paying 500 if MS removed some of their bullshit policies. 60FPS and dedicated servers is amazing. If gameplay+maps are good I would buy the xbone for Halo alone. Plus a new Killer Instinct (which is also 60 FPS!) Forza and Sunset Overdrive.

But then there's the PS4 with exclusive Destiny, Drive Club, Infamous, and Killzone. Plus other exclusives from Naughty Dog and other first party developers. Not to mention the console is 100 dollars cheaper and PS+ is always giving away a shit ton of games.

I don't know what to do

I wonder if they don't just have unlock redemption codes or accounts etc for those circumstances. MS have very well developed DRM technology. They could even provide codes or XBL accounts or console unlocks for say a 7 day period and then back to normal operations etc. I'm curious and you raise solid points regarding LAN's or tournies.

One thing though all professional tournies these days basically stream their content live so they already have the networking/Internet in place. It's the home based LAN's that would seem limited.

Why does 343 hate Haven now? Forge maps are showing up waaaaaaay too often in the choices, usually with no dev map in a round of voting.

Bad night of Halo. :-/

You guys make me sad, Halo 3 becoming free to millions of people is only a good thing. Gets more people playing it so I get more and better matches and people who've never played Halo before get to play a classic. Say what you guys want but I thoroughly enjoyed Halo 3 MP, even if it pissed of the H2 MP purists.

I am actually interested in playing through Halo 3's Campaign again. I breezed through it 4 player co op on Legendary in the first week. Didn't really pay attention to anything and it was stupid easy with 3 other players.

Every time I tried to play again Solo I would get bored as fuck somewhere on Tsavo Highway I think. So many of HaloGAF like it, so I will give it another shot to see if I can see the fun, but I doubt I will get over the Brutes, and sluggish gameplay.

While I don't think equipment brought anything positive to the table, I was alright with pretty much everything else. Maps were fine, netcode was fine (if you tolerate Halo PC, you tolerate anything), had a perfect control scheme, but man it can't be stated enough how crippling the FOV and aiming felt.

I've warmed up on 3's campaign over the years, it's fun to just load up marines with heavy weaponry and go on a stroll. The Brutes weren't bad by 3 as they tried to make them as analogous to Elites as possible.

I don't think they are very analogous with elites, they are a much different kind of challenge. Where they'd usually throw 1 or 2 elites at you, you instead get a pack of brutes. They are much easier to kill one on one, but are stronger in unison.

I think the Halo 3 campaign is likely the best in terms of sandbox fun.

Halo 4 was more like Halo 2 imo, very corridor-y, although sometimes the corridors were very large.

Brutes are definitely more fun than Knights :|

Oh and what the hell is up with Regicide? That place is like AR hell. Played a few games, and I'm pretty sure every time literally everyone but me was rolling with AR/Auto... shit was painful. I still won, but damn. Better connections than Rumble Pit at least.

Best part about Halo 3 being free is that a whole group of gamers can experience it who never got to. For a lot of current Halo fans, maybe they started with Reach or 4. Remember it's been almost 6 years since Halo 3 launched.

So they'll experience the campaign, the music, see Arbiter again, see Keyes, the Prophets, Brutes etc.

Plus you never know how it'll impact multiplayer. Maybe a few thousand more people playing? If it gets a bit active again, maybe 343 could refine a playlist or two.

Halo Anniversary should be free for XBL Gold soon so that these kids can get some perspective on what made Halo amazing in the first place. Then maybe the audience will speak out more en masse and try to get back to the basics of amazing core mechanics and fun dynamic encounters.

I am excited to see how Free Halo 3 effects the player base. We should see a decent amount of people back I think.

Sigh. This thing came up quite quickly, we will also have to look at playlists as a result. But come on.

You can get the game used for very little as a part of ODST with all the maps. ODST is worth it alone if you never played 3. This way you get the campaign and all the maps.

Hey Frankie, can you put the bed this rumor about 343 not owning the original trilogy that Marty composed? You guys were able to use a remix in the credits of 4 and the teaser. Just wondering what if any are the limitation you guys have to the original music.
