I simply don't know yet. This gen was a slow burner too aside from the Wii, and we have to wait and see if there's a new killer franchise out there, or if the social features will kick off big time and even if the whole T.V push by MS and Sony pays off.

At this point in time though there's not enough evidence to make me believe next gen is going to be a rough ride for the industry. Specially since more than ever consumers seem to spend much more on a by title basis than ever before (DLCs and what not). It just seems like revenue streams keep multiplying, and I don't know if next gen will be any different.

i'm intentionally not replying to everything else, but not because i don't think it doesn't merit a response, just that the above is more or less the main argument, and we seem to agree on the rest.

one thing last gen had going for it immediately was the xbox 360, but it also had the ps2, psp, and gba selling very well alongside it initially. the only slow burners last gen were the ds and the ps3. i think the problem would be having a slow burner, or worse- two, at the start of the generation. there's nothing like the 2006 ps2, gba or psp to make a smooth transition.

I have Wii U's lowest at 33K. May.
An honest question guys.

PS3 and Xbox360 are selling bad because they cost so much right? So if Sony and MS decide to drop the price to $99-129, wouldn't that eat into the next generation sales? I keep hearing that Wii U is too expensive while the PS360 is cheap bla bla bla. Wouldn't that apply to them too?
The PS3 and 360 are selling poorly not only because they're still quite expensive, but also because they're very very old systems now.
It is believed the market willing to spend $100 on a video game console does not overlap much with that willing to spend $400.
Also this.

Gonna have to agree with this. I misplaced my original DS Lite at one point and, rather than going to my parents house to go look for it (would have taken a whole day), I just went and bought another one without thinking twice about it. I know parents who bought one for each member of the family, adults included, as presents. People were picking these things up like candy.

I did eventually find that first DS, which helped a lot with self-trades across Pokemon generations.

I bought 6 ds over the life of the system. Some for gifts and some for me. That 129 price tag really made it easier to swallow. 199... That's a significant investment for a handheld.

Is Vita under or above PSP? I'm at the edge of my seat.

Wii U will have healthy sales in August thanks to Pikmin.

Pikmin may have motivated a bunch of hardcore Nintendo fans to pick up the console, but it won't push it anywhere near "healthy".

Especially since after release in Japan, sales for the Wii U have dropped and dropped...

Wii U is selling so badly right now, does it even matter if it sells a few thousand less than months prior?

In it's 9th month, I have the Vita at 35K. So the Wii U wins this month again in the how low can you go competition. After this month we get into Vita's holiday months so the comparison stops being particularly fair.

It took until April this year for the Vita to go below 30K I believe, although when it went below it went way below.
