So, coming off a mess of Game Gear games and the atrocious Black Knight, this is actually a pretty okay little game. Right now, my group is up to just after the part where you restore the fourth emerald, so we'll probably finish it up when we get together next weekend.

So, let's see... First and foremost, the little level select "temple" hubs look really, really bad. Some combination of the textures and the strangely low poly counts make it look like it's running on something way weaker than a Wii. It's weird, and super ugly. And of course the replacement for the actual hubs from the HD version look super lazy with their crappy map screen or whatever. Also, something feels... off about platforming with the werehog. It seems a LOT easier to die than it should be. Oh, and the stages where you need to get 200 rings or avoid hitting pots are blatant, lame filler crap. Also, the homing really shouldn't be linked to waggle, as it causes you to frequently boost when you mean to home, leading to easy deaths.

Still, it's a fun little game, and a HELL of a lot better than most of the Sonic games I've played recently. I also really like that the hidden items here are just unlockable sounds/art/movies instead of barring your progress (like the HD Unleashed) or being completely lame and useless (06). Kind of a precursor to the way Red Rings worked in Generations.

The only good thing about the Wii version of Sonic Unleashed is that it actually has better Sonic level for Eggman Land and the Super Sonic boss battle is much better than in the HD version.

It had a PS2 version, maybe thats why.

Also, HD version is way better (I guess you already played that one).

IMO Eggmanland is better in the HD version. Problem is that it ocntains both Sonic and Werehog parts onto the same stage, making it just too long. Other than that the Sonic path of Eggmanland in HD have more platforming and overall more interesting level design (same with the Werehog).

Can't you play with a GameCube or Classic Controller for this game? Why not play with that instead of waggling about with a Wiimote?

The only thing better thing they did with Eggman Land was make it infinitely easier.
Eggman Land in the HD versions was one of the hardest final levels this gen by far.

I must be the only person on the planet who didn't have a problem with the Werehog controls. And yes, I did use the wiimote. Other than there being too many of the night stages and some of the levels being cut, I didn't have a problem with the game.

IIRC, wasn't the Perfect Dark Gaia fight in the Wii version considered better?

That last level was like the final nail in the coffin. Felt like the developers were quite aware that it was so hard that they put a 1 up next to one of the checkpoints, Remember being quite angry when I finally finished the game.

I should hold my tongue lest I be mauled by rabid Sonic fans, but I'll say it anyway: I liked Unleashed quite a bit (PS3 version). In fact the werehog stages are the only time I've ever actually enjoyed a Sonic game... For the very reason Sonic fans all hated it... It's nothing like a Sonic game. :p

And I have now (along with my friends) beaten the game. And... it was a pain. Mostly due to the stupid werehog platforming. I mean, something just feels terribly... off about the werehog controls. This was made SUPER clear by the stage with the whirlpools and rafts, which was probably the worst stage in the game. So simple, yet so easy to go flying off something stupidly or have something just screw up. Yuck. And then came Eggmanland. And... ugh. The day stage was a serious, serious pain. It caught us off guard and took a TON of tries. For me personally the pain came from those stupid slanted platforms. I swear, something is wrong with the physics on those, and it ALWAYS screws me up. Mostly, though, it was the lack of any kind of one ups and the length of the stage that was a killer. I mean, you don't even get a 1-up from 100 rings! And then they had to rub salt in the wound by making us do the whole stage again in time attack mode before letting us advance! We eventually made it through with, like, 2 seconds left on the clock. After that, the first werehog stage was a pain due to the near endless swarms of enemies, but was doable. And then the other werehog stages were so relatively painless that we got S-ranks on them all. Weird.

And then came the kind of weird final boss. Starting it on essentially a Punch Out knockoff was kind of weird. And then the segments running along with Sonic. Those weren't too bad, outside of them having what I think may be the only rail transfer in the game, which threw me off because it worked like a quick dash instead of your usual Sonic rail transfer controls. And then just your normal Super Sonic finale (though it took me a second to figure out I need to use the dash to avoid the attacks).

I mean, all in all it's not a totally terrible game, but I definitely don't think the high points make up for the frustrating, annoying lows it hits. Hopefully I'll have a better time when I give the HD version a spin.
