If, IF, those hardware numbers are true it doesn't say good things for PS3 demand.
Sony are learning their lesson.
I just hope it doesn't mean crappy support from Jap developers.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
if it keeps that way - SE should start 2 announce some new wii games....

I wonder wether 3rd party Wii launch software sales will pick up as the total Wii userbase increases or not... If Wii keeps selling the way it does, Zelda could really take off IMO (compared to The Wind Waker). Does anyone have the sales numbers on the GameCube version btw?

I'd say PS3 actually isn't doing all that bad. There's a very small selection of games available in Japan and really none of them are potential high sellers (except for RR7 to an extent, but RR6 didn't drive 360 sales much). PSP (although a handheld) at least had a Hot Shots Golf and Dynasty Warriors at launch (stuff that sold 1 million on PS2). I do feel that once more appealing games come out, the PS3 sales will increase (It's outselling 360 currently and there are pretty good games out for 360 in Japan).

I can't believe Resistance is selling as well as it has in Japan. By the rate its going, it may be the top selling FPS ever in Japan, but we'll see.

MMOs usually require a lot of real-estate, towns, fleshed out worlds. There also has to be a reason for the tens of thousands of gamers to populate the world.

I think a Pokemon MMO would run into problems because it would probably be very frustrating to younger gamers who have to deal with the vulgar language and attitude of other players. Also competition for rare items/monsters might get out of hand. Again, given the demographic who plays it (i'm not saying its for kids, but a lot of kids do enjoy Pokemon) it might not be a good thing.

You know, my experiences on Xbox Live doesn't give me much faith in that department. My black friend, who happened to love Gears of War, doesn't even play it anymore after about 20 ppl (half of whom sounded like some 10 year old) dropped the n-bomb more times than I can count.

It was pointed out earlier that PS3 is outpacing the PS2 at this point. Sales only seem poor when set in stark releif against the unprecedented success of Nintendo. The PSP is in the same situation. It's reasonably popular, but it's nothing compared to DS mania. It's a good sign for overall industry health, isn't it?

Normally it would be, there's just one variable that kills lower trending hardware: Third parties.

IF third parties treated all systems equally we'd see somewhat equal growth. What third parties usually do though, is stick with the Winner. If the PS3 falls behind like this for too long it will be nothing but bad news for Sony.

Er... I thought PS2 passed a million in like 2 weeks originally? It took Wii 4-5 weeks to do that and PS3's barely half way there 2 months later...

I think he's confused between PS2 and PSP... or something.
PS2 sold 650k in its opening weekend. PS3 has yet to reach that amount after two months.

yeah. it was pointed out that the ps3 has outpaced the ps2 if we're talking about how long it took for sales to DROP to the 30k bracket. it's certainly outpaced it there.

but remember kids, 1 million shipped to japan!

mission accomplished!

Oh dear...and PS3 is cheaper there than here.

Software needed. And even then, we'll see if it matters.

If PS3 number is real...we must wait one more week, since this one number isnt enough.

However, I see sony anouncing new colors and a tetrapack soon.

Actually, is the 20GB version available in Japan? If not....I assume it will be very very soon

Here's an interesting tidbit;

The PS2 didnt hit the 30k mark untill 7-months after its release.

I was referring to this post. Apparantly, I read it backwards. I thought he was saying PS2 started more slowly, but it could just as easily mean the opposite.

Edit: It's early (for me), and I have a long day of work ahead. Be gentle.

Good sales for wii third partys. Also go FF3 :)

The PS3 is just sad.

Resistance broke 100k? Isn't that like...really good considering the game type and hardware base in Japan?

It definitely is. Famitsu gave it great scores as well. Japan loves FPS CONFIRMED.

Is spin in anyway possible for this?

Shortages?

nope and nope.

PS3 is at about 500k YTD - and Sony themselves have said that they've shipped 1m units in Japan (which by Sonys definition is to the hands of retailers) ;)

so - we have 500k units on shelves , and 35k sold this week.

I mentioned that there would be a lull after xmas already - the sales are going to stay low for a while and the PS3 is -OBVIOUSLY- not selling in Japan. Alarm bells surely are starting to ring.

seriously - remember the "Sony will sell as many units as they can ship" line? it's not looking to rosy right about now.

They even lowered the price for the 20 Gigs shortly before launch.
PS3 will take off once more software gets released. It could still rise to PS2 numbers heaven-who will know? The DS took off quite late as well.

While I agree with the 'DS took off quite late' statement in general (in that it didn't go doolally until Lite hit), comparing the PS3 to DS at this stage doesn't look good for the PS3.

After 9 weeks...

PS3 DS
81,639 468,883
42,099 198,892
32,662 221,625
31,436 396,674
50,171 209,522
70,942 108,561
76,882 53,527
71,727 43,226
69,944 44,608

total
527,502 1,745,518

The DS launched 3 weeks later as well so the last 3 weeks on the DS list are post Christmas bonanza period (2nd week of Jan onwards).

Are you going to hang your hopes on that?

What happens when it turns out to be pretty much correct? What then? Let's have a trial run, shall we?

uh oh
DSlite: 110k
Wii: 96k
PSP: 45k
PS3: 34k
PS2: 24k
360: 9k

Nice Wii and DS sales. The effect of the PS3's price has kicked in and is now showing. Not very surprising at this point. Its sales will remain lukewarm until a price drop. Expected 360 sales. Like I said before it would have been lucky to maintain 10k, but 9k is at the higher end of what I expected for a regular January week. I expected between 5k-6k average. If it holds anywhere near here it will outsell the original Xbox by the end of summer, although I still expect it to drop to 5k-6k.

Last week's numbers and percentage change for comparison:

DSL 344,878
Wii 195,331
PSP 118,186
PS3 69,944
PS2 52,037
Xbox360 18,235

DSL(-68%)
Wii(-51%)
PSP(-62%)
PS3(-52%)
PS2(-54%)
Xbox 360(-50%)

The biggest drop in sales was in hand-helds.

Huh? The software sales are utterly horrible, and that's where profits come from. So Sony is taking huge hits on hardware in Japan while failing to sale any software. How is that "not bad at all"?

And RR and Genji both sold well on the PS2.
