A video circulating on social media showing a confrontation between a female student and a male, Matt Linder, wearing a hat with the message, “Make America Great Again” has spurred a public response from Mount Royal University (MRU).

“We are aware of the post and will not comment on the specifics of this instance,” reads the statement posted online. “Mount Royal University respects individuals who exercise their constitutionally-protected right to freedom of expression.”

The video, posted by Ian Soliterman, begins with the female approaching Linder wearing a red ballcap often found on Trump supporters in the United States.

Yep that is what I expected two people having a disagreement that is conversation. Not surprised at all that it was considered offensive, he knew when he put it on people would say something.

I got really happy until I clicked the article and saw that you were using the extension. I really thought something popped off because someone was wearing the John Oliver hat.

That said, let's just go ahead and get it out of the way. No. Universities aren't supposed to be safe spaces, but safe spaces can exist within universities. If that dude wasn't breaking the rules, he can wear what the fuck he wants. Stop hassling people in public spaces for wearing things you don't like.

I've seen people with make America great again t-shirts on my campus. Never sure if they're wearing them to promote Donald or just to be ironic. Could care less either way though.

I knew a guy last year in high school who would wear a Trump hat to school every day and ran the Donald Trump for President club.

He's Japanese, he isn't eligible to vote because he isn't a citizen, and our school is located in downtown Manhattan with a majority Asian and South Asian population.

Nothing surprises me anymore.

Bullshit like this is exactly why people like trump so much in the first place. Like, the fuck happened to ignoring idiots and going about your business. No I saw something that I don't like I must speak up and cause a ruckus.

I do want to state that I stand by my belief that every space, but especially university spaces, should be made to make everyone feel SAFE.

She wants the entire university to be a safe space? That seems a little over the top

high school kids wear them at some Vancouver-area high schools I work at. I ask if it's ironic and they start spouting Trumpisms. I figured you needed to take Poli Sci 100 in college before you knew everything about politics but I guess Socials 10 is the level.

Its a university a bunch of people just coming into adulthood expanding their minds and wanting to make change. Speaking out is a major part of the whole theme and idea of going to university. It wasn't exactly a ruckus. Where did you go to university soviet russia?

It's a goddamn hat, he's not wearing the confederate flag, a swastika or some indian mascot, which would still be only drawings but with much more history. Move on and let it go.

Why is she wearing her hat backwards? Doesn't she know that wearing a hat backwards is culturally appropriating the working class? Shame on her for not checking her privilege and wearing that hat as a fashion statement.

Nah. Society can reject his bullshit. More like deal with people hassling you for believing in bullshit you put on display in public spaces

I think people are missing that this is in Canada. Openly supporting Trump is not going to go over well. The dude is only rolling that hat because it's at a University and he wants to get attention. He did that in a bar he would be lucky to escape with a beer shower and most likely get a smack from someone trying to impress the girl.

Tell somebody that they can't wear the hat and that you're going to get the president of the university to personally come down and scold them, and get ridiculed as silly.

Very simple transactions all around.

Sure. She's being an idiot. I just have zero sympathy for people who endorse racists.

Also this is one woman and now it's national news.

Look, I'm no fan of Donald Trump or his campaign, but you can't go around preaching that you want a space where everyone feels safe and included, and then go and threaten someone over a hat. That kind of hypocritical attitude is a major reason why Trump has support among moderates. There will always be racists and bigots, but you can't seriously claim to be in support of free speech if you mean "free speech that goes along with what I find acceptable." All that does is push people away from what is a positive message.

It agitates me when people act like bullies under the guise of social justice.
