I want to force myself to finish the HD version. Is it worth it?

I would say no, the games are fairly archaic by now. You'd super miss some of the modern entries' conveniences and streamlining.

Fond of the dungeons despite a few stinkers, but combat is significantly more stiff, certainly.

No free run, no side steps, some characters just felt bad to play (looking at you Sheena), Overlimit was difficult to trigger, Mystic Artes had obscure conditions, Exsphere system was meh. I don't remember if you could free target spells.

I hated Innocence R, while I had no problems with the original. Conway and QQ are the worst Tales expansion characters ever conceived.

Yes the Triverse thing in the remake is bad, but the main cast is still pretty bland in both games. Ruca is a lot worse than Assbel. And there are maps in the dungeons now, at least.

It's not so baffling why they didn't bother to put any effort whatsoever in their HD transition.

It's because they're Namco.

Their work on game stuff is great, their work on regular animu is great too but they hold too much stuff back so the BD's look amazing. Shaft are also guilty of this.

Yuri is objectively the best jrpg protag in the last million years, that alone elevates it above every other Tales game.

Shaft is shit.

You're making me realize if they did remaster Xenosaga it would be horrible. Well maybe not if MLSI is involved...

They should just let Hexadrive handle it, and it would be great. Plus add JP voice option as well..

But yea I don't think Namco would do that.....

D: Hexadrive = Money. LOL That would be a dream remaster though.

I really wanted Symphonia to get like ToP PSX or ToDR treatment, but lol nope.

Implying the monogatari isn't a masterpiece and that the BD's are not amazing?

Slightly OT, watched Tsukimonogatari while ARR is down, and still remains one of the best series ever. endnote.

Vesperia gets lots of points from me for having the only cast in the series that I don't hate.
You didn't like Phantasia's and Destiny's casts? Destiny I can kind of see but Stahn is a great character.

Tales needs more hotblooded/Seki Tomokazu-style characters.

I can agree with you on bland, but I still like Hermana and Ange quite a bit.

You got your hotblooded char with Ivar ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Characters aside, gameplay systems in Team Symphonia styled titles upset me so much nowadays with TP TP TP. I find it such a chore to play ToHR because of this. ToD2? ToR? ToH? ToDR? Godlike. Hrm, I miss 3LMB. . . Udo titles tend to have more rewarding battle systems and very visceral in action and transitions. Smooth, clean, and fast.

I never got the hype. From what I've watched it's a perverted harem with neat visuals and the occasional interesting supernatural plot.

Back on topic, I wonder if you can change the camera or not. I haven't heard anything about it yet. It would take some serious getting used to if you couldn't.

Ok friends someone is gonna have to translate the jap menus for me because I think it's time to buy the Japanese version of Zestiria, the hype got to me. It's all ogre boys

Amazing dialogue, amazing characters, top tier animation. I really don't get off on chinese cartoon porn so all the ecchi stuff is wasted on me so I think I can look past it.

It has to change when playing with 2 or more people right? I mean I can't imagine they'd use splitscreen or some weird shit like that.

Vesperia would easily be Symphonia/Abyss tier for me if it weren't for the plot-baiting or undeveloped story bits. It was especially frustrating considering just how everything else was such high quality (dem graphics, battle system and music!).

Maybe with enough remakes Symphonia will get a proper remake!

I'm on my seventh or so playthrough at the moment and I think Symphonia could really benefit from a remake. I love the game to death, but it's hard to ignore all the flaws and it honestly looked aged even when it was new.

Also, the Izoold/Palmacosta segment is easily the worst part of the game with how they randomly shoehorn sidequest stuff into the game's progression (the palma potion shit, ugghhghgh). If the game doesn't capture you by the time you reach the Tower of Salvation, it's probably not for you.

Yeah, the models especially are caught in this weird/awful area between the charm of FF7's ultra-deformed silhouette suggestions and actually trying to look like a chibi anime. Colette especially bugs me every time I see her.

Like seriously good Lord it is hard to take the cast seriously.

edit: I'd take a Sprite remake just btw :V

Alvin on his own isn't bad. The writing surrounding his repeated betrayals is colossally bad.

I'll give you that, but I blame that on RPG mechanics more than anything. They needed a way to
keep him in your party because otherwise you wouldn't have him for, like, half of the game.

After playing through the game twice, I don't find it too unbelievable.
Milla and Rowen were the only two characters who would have the resolve to kill him outright. And Milla does outright threaten him when they're in Xian Du. But Milla seems to think she can keep an eye on him, Rowen seems to feel sorry for him, and I seriously doubt the other three could bring themselves to hurt him. Elize expresses her annoyance by callimg him a "big fat liar." Jude wants to believe that Alvin is really a good person under it all as shown in a bunch of cutscenes (Alvin did save him after all). And Leia is even less likely to hurt him than Jude because she mentions that she has a weak spot for people with sad stories.

But mostly it's the RPG mechanics. Plenty of other RPGs have been hampered by the same thing. Heck, in Xenoblade they originally meant
for a party member to betray you
, but then had to change it because they realized how that'd pose a problem for the player.

The thing about TP is it's extra resource management that's tedious in battle systems that are getting more and more combo friendly.
I'm all for magic management in other JRPGs, but in Tales, it just breaks the flow of battle if you have to stop using these neat combo special moves and run away and awkwardly eat an Orange Gel every few seconds. CC works better for the direction Tales battle systems are going.

Vesperia probably had the best overall cast, but I enjoyed Xillia 2's and Destiny's. Hoping Zesteria has a decent cast in the end.

Whoever gets the import first, please check if and how configurable the battle camera is. Even Famitsu and Dengeki complained about the close battle camera, and nobody so far bothered to mention whether this is some crap set in stone or just an ill-advised default.

Waiting for dem leaks... and Twitch streams. Copy is ready for shipping but I don't think it will arrive this week. :-(

I also only understand anime gibberish japanese when spoken, but the last 10 years I did fine with that lol. The german Tales of Hearts R localization sucked ass and yesterday when I streamed it, I had to translate it correctly for the stream.... e.g. "hentai" was translated to "good-for-nothing" or Kohaku mentioning that she has black hair like her brother etc. weren't really properly translated. :(

I know opinions and all but to the people who think tales characters are always sh*t
can you point me to the other Jrpg that you actually think their characters are good?

I played many rpg since the snes and I find many tales characters above the average at least,
yes there is some bad or abysmal like cheria but even she is not in the level of bad as yukari, rinoa and yuna for me
maybe I have a high tolerance than many here. the only games I dropped because of how awful the characters were star ocean 4 and bravely default

Dragon Quest VIII the whole main cast is great well minus Hero since he is mute. Top tier voice acting helps too.

I don't think Tales charactes are always crappy, they are mostly cliche, but I like that in my jrpg's (usually) and that's why I love the series. Apart from that, I think Lost Odyssey had really great characters.

ToD2 used TP, though!! (I know it works a little differently)

None of the three thousand anime crossover costumes are pre-order bonuses, right? Just the cameo Mystic Artes plus the strap. Gah, I think I'm going to give in and order it.

I'll be importing this, welp. hopefully I won't get the game for the end of February or something, I'm in no rush but I don't want to wait months either.

hearing from 2ch that Alisha is barely in the opening....

why the hell are they hiding her so much...

Her sudden disappearance from media is very curious. However I don't want to find out why before I play the game so maybe those story beats could be spoilered?

Nope, no preorder DLC costumes for once.

I am tempted at some of the cross-over stuff since those will probably never come to the West.

Got shoved aside the moment Rose appeared, lol

Going by the anime special Alisha is firstly a story telling tool to get Sorey to leave his village. Her further applications obviously are spoiler territory, maybe she's a somewhat playable Claire? =P

Maybe they're pulling a Flynn with her.

She'll appear in half the cutscenes, have quite a lot of dialog lines and you'll have her as a party member for 5 minutes but she'll never join the party.

Then the PS4 version will have her as a playable character.

Though they did show her in the fields and her taking part in random battles.

Unless it was one elaborate ruse.

I hope this game is exactly like Graces. That'd be really great. We have Sorey be Asbel, Mikleo be Hubert, Edna be Pascal, Lailah be Cheria. Oh man. =/

It's weird cuz Alisha has been shown in playable stuff far more than Rose and she gets a pre-order mystic arte. But Rose has been shown far in other media since her intro. Really curious to finally see what's gonna happen with them.

We still don't know if Zaveid is playable at all.

Rose dies in the middle and Alisha takes over her place. You can still have Rose post game. Also, you get Zaveid and Dezel but you have to choose who to keep. LOL. =P
