If it releases this year, Silence will get nominated in all major categories just like all Scorsese films which released during Oscar season have post 2000. I don't think it's winning anything though. I don't think the subject matter or style will be palatable to the Academy's taste.

Gosling was terrific in The Nice Guys (even better than he was in La La Land, IMO). But it's the kind of performance the Academy never recognizes.
Sam Rockwell has had a half-dozen performances in his career on par with what Gosling delivered in The Nice Guys and hasn't been nominated a single time. Not even for Moon where he was pretty much the only actor on-screen.
The "will it / won't it" release question surrounding Silence is going to be paramount in shaping most of this year's Oscar races. I'm sort of hoping it doesn't to make for an easier path to the Director prize for Jenkins but I suspect it will.

I love The Departed. It's incredibly rewatchable and the acting is fantastic. I'm glad they gave it best pic, even if it's a pity Oscar for giving best pic to Dances with Wolves over Goodfellas.
Well, I wouldn't have chosen anything among the nominees. Just sticking with the Academy's tastes, just elevate The Lives of Others out of the foreign language category.
But I'd throw my nods towards Children of Men, The Fountain, The Prestige, even Casino Royale.
I'm going to say La La Land is probably going to sweep up if the early reviews are anything to go by. The controversy around Birth of a Nation is going to hurt it hard - though I suppose it could potentially be another case of a film getting Best Picture but not Best Director if they like it but want to distance themselves from Parker.

The only knock against it is that she seemed inconsistent with Jackie O's accent at times. She more than compensated with the strength of her performance, however.

True, but nominating him for one or two awards even with the controversy prevents another "Oscars So White" situation, though it opens up another one about rape culture and Hollywood (and people will use both this and The Pianist and Polanski).

If Denzel as a director is capable of capturing the powerful emotion and excellent dialogue of August Wilson's pulitzer prize winning play and successfully adapts it to film, then I could see both Denzel and Viola having good chances of winning.

There are other films that could be selected to avoid "Oscars So White" situation, such as the critically acclaimed Moonlight, and the prestige films of Fences and Hidden Figures. Fox Searchlight plans on doing a screening of Hidden Figures in the fall to make the film eligible for awards season due to the positive buzz surrounding it, and in case the rape controversy affects The Birth of a Nation's chances, which they're also promoting and distributing, despite the fact Hidden figures officially releases in January 2017.

I'm curious about Fences, but if it's like his previously directed films, it's not gonna make too much noise. (those films were solid though)
Moonlight has gotten great reviews and it doesn't have all the baggage that Birth of a Nation is coming with given Parker's past. There's also Denzel's Fences.

Yeah, I see Denzel and Viola's performances being nominated before I see the film or Denzel as a director being nominated. Unless Denzel hit's it out of the park. He's a very good director, but hasn't reached greatness yet.

You all are right, I had forgotten about how well Moonlight is being received, and while I knew Denzel was making a movie out of that play, I hadn't really heard any buzz about it yet.

It looks like a zillion movies I already watched and yet it looks absolutely beautiful for reasons I can't quite explain. Besides, Ang Lee got shafted twice with Pi and Brokeback losing to lesser films, he's way overdue.
But he won best director for both films!

On a tangent, but I hope Fences proves great because Denzel Washington previously said the plan was for him to follow it up by directing and producing adaptations of the other August Wilson plays for HBO. Although in the initial conversation where he kinda leaked his own news, he said Fences would be for HBO too, so I hope that's all still in the cards.

Really? Awesome. I kept looking for follow-up details and actual press releases, but never really saw much.

La La Land certainly seems like front runner material. A great, original screen musical with big stars and love letter to old Hollywood, right up the Academy's alley.
Taking this opportunity to promote the movie just about everybody loved at TIFF, Moonlight. By all accounts, its a beautiful, lyrical film about black masculinity and sexuality, with a cast of perfect performances, great camerawork, bold cinematography and music choices, and a third act with an unprecedented amount of emotional payoff. Definitely the film I'm anticipating the most this year, and all the great reviews certainly have my excited.

Well you never know, Julianne Moore won for Still Alice and that wasn't near her best work, cause she was due. Emma Stone winning an Oscar would be crazy, though.

Not that I disagree, but I think winning Best Director is much better recognition as a Director than having your film be recognized as best film.
Especially since you dont even get the statue as a director for best picture unless you were a producer on the film as well (though most bigger names are both).
