The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD Announced

Ill bet one of the extra dungeons was in the ruins of Hyrule, that would've been sick to explore. :)
If they let us do this, I wouldn't care about anything else.
Tri-Force fetch quest? Bring it on again.
Non-orchestrated music? Whatever.
That asshole Tingle demanding like a billion rupees? Fuck you, Tingle – here's your money.

As long as we can just run around Hyrule and really get a sense of the place.

Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto and Wind Waker director Eiji Aonuma have admitted that the last instalment in the GameCube series wasn't quite up to scratch - promising they'll do a lot better with Twilight Princess.

Aonuma told Swedish magazine Reset that the gameplay in Wind Waker was "dull", admitting that he was in a bit of a hurry when it came to working on the triforce piece hunt.

"At the end of the production we fought against the clock and there were parts that I was forced to approve even though it didn't feel complete," he said.

"I apologise that we didn't fix the triforce hunt at the end of the game. It was slow and dull."

But lessons have been learned, according to Aonuma: "During the development of Twilight Princess, I refused to repeat the same mistakes.

"It means more responsibility for me, but this time we can't let things go wrong."

Miyamoto echoed Aonuma's comments, telling Reset that he wants Twilight Princess "to contain all sides of what people think of the Legend of Zelda series.

"I have absorbed the criticism we got from The Wind Waker, that the sea was too big and the number of dungeons and caves were too few," he said.

"The new game will have more dungeons. Many more."

As previously suggested Twilight Princess will be a lot darker than previous Zelda games - Link is an adult now, and the storyline is "long, complex and occasionally serious," according to Miyamoto and Aonuma. It's slated for a November release and, as you'll know if you read our first impressions of the game, it's shaping up very nicely indeed.

Eurogamer from 2005

This is a golden opportunity to right these wrongs. If they don't take advantage... damn shame.

I think they fix the triforce quest by removing the amount of rupees Tingle required for each chart. I think the total was 3400 in total or something ridiculous like that. If you didn't have the giant wallet (like I didn't), it took especially long.

They actually did fix the Triforce hunt a little from the Japanese version, where one of the charts required you to follow a trail of like three other charts.

(incidentally i'm replaying ww right now and for whatever reason i have plenty of money without any kind of farming and was able to pay tingle easily)

I hate to be that guy, but there won't be any content changes to the re-release. In the OoT3D Iwata Asks, Grezzo said Miyamoto explicitly forbid them from altering the content as players of the original would feel that their memories had been betrayed.
OoT and WW are two completely different beasts, you can't really compare them. OoT is considered to be by and large the very best, it's the benchmark to which all other Zelda's are measured...for many, including myself, nothing in the Zelda universe touches it...yet. So when considering WW and what would seem a short falling on behalf of Nintendo to fine tune and balance not just the fetch quests, but some of the control issues(sailing/wind), the lack of land masses to explore and dungeons to conquere(just to name a few issues)...they owe it to themselves and fans to rectify this and craft a game that can possibly stand shoulder to shoulder with Ocarina. IMO, I'd feel betrayed if they didn't address these issues...
This is a golden opportunity to right these wrongs. If they don't take advantage... damn shame.
Exactly :)

my memory is hazy but weren't some of the maps ridiculously expensive to buy/decipher

add a dungeon where the reward at the end is all the maps.

It's not just a graphical upgrade, Aonuma specifically said they would be tuning up the gameplay.

The use of the word "tuning" implies that not much is going to change, at least to me. I don't expect much more than some sort of implementation of the Wii U controller.

I loved WW and all, but honestly, why are they remaking it? It was one of the best looking games last generation, and considering it looks like they ditched the cel shading, the most endearing and enabling part of its graphical prowess, altogether, it just doesn't make any fucking sense...

I'm not complaining, but I'd've killed for a LttP HD remake. Hand drawn sprites, whatever, just... ungh.

But yea, why WW?
edit: and wtf, why WW especially if they're not to improve the few glaring flaws of the original?!

Alright, after all these "OMG best Zelda ever" posts I couldn't take it anymore. I cramped through some of the older TWW threads just to see if I'm completely crazy. While there surely are a lot of appreciations, I feel like most of the Yay goes to the graphics and style choices (which imo fall short in the remake). Sadly the original OT got buried with the old board, or at least I couldn't find it. Anyway, don't tell me this game was loved by everyone, it surely wasn't.

So, what did the criticism look like?

-Link character artstyle. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the art work (I think the stained glasses in Hyrule castle are the most gorgeous pieces of art ever to come from EAD) and the animation, but link's character model fell flat in that regard.
-Lack of dungeons. I know they rushed the game out, and I will never forgive them for that. That's why I totally didn't mind them delaying Twilight Princess.
- Difficulty. Come on, the fucking pig on outset island is the strongest enemy in the game. None of this quarter heart damage stuff.
-Triforce hunt. That's been covered to death. I don't like it NOT because it was tedious (pretty easy), rather that I know it was put in place because of a rushed game.
-Ocean travelling. I loved the scale of the sailing, but the thing I didn't like was that there was very little in terms of actual exploration other than the main isles. I would have killed for an extra large isle or two with a hidden item or something. (so disappointed with the haunted ship).
-No fishing. THE HELL.
Edit: oops, forgot about the music. Recycled inside house music, bad Nintendo!

- too few dungeons / uninspired dungeon design
- no exploring old Hyrule
- WAY too easy - (!!!!!!!!)
- sitting through the wind waker animation every time you changed the wind
- horrible character design for the humanoids (IMO, of course your mileage may vary)
- very little land to exlpore (I would LOVE this style put to use in a "dry" overworld)
- tedius sailing and having to change wind direction too much
- escort dungeons (same issue as changing wind direction - too many animations to sit through)

Wind Waker sucks and anyone who thinks it's a good game just has bad taste and low expectations.

sadly the final battle does not make up for the rest of the shitty game

As fine of a game as this is, the mear mention of the words "Triforce" and "Hunt" in the same sentences makes me clench my teeth in rage. That and the side quests were huge which was a good thing, but the rewards were rediculously not worth the effort which was a bad thing.

I loved the art style and graphics but I was disappointed with the games difficulty, lack of dungeons and rather sparse sea.

I would take up that argument, but I'm too busy laughing.

I love the artstyle of WW.
Like Dragona, I also didn't have a problem with the sailing or the triforce quests or any of that.
The problem I have with WW is that it is way too easy and there's not nearly enough dungeons in the game (Majora's Mask was able to get away with this because of the fact that it had SO much else to do.)
WW is easily my least favorite Zelda, but still a great game.

There are glaring flaws that held back an otherwise remarkable game [...]
I'm so glad that Nintendo is conscious of where WW fell short and won't repeat their mistakes. :)

Wind Waker needed time. If it had been given as much as Twilight Princess, it would have been just as good.

less water = more fun

this thread is totally homo

Agreed 100%. If the slide had said "overhauling the gameplay," I think a case could be made for seeing the unfinished dungeons included. As it is, I expect only minor changes (further tweaks to the "Triumph Forks" quest, for instance).

(the video is pretty much what I would expect the remake to look like)

and an updated ingame shot

albeit, airborn seems to have made a lot of progress in creating a unified and unique look to their game. They have the saturation and styling in a good place where i think nintendo is missing it. The texture and lighting feels more appropriate, and the character models hit a good mix of simple and cartoony.

It's just funny to me that the moment I saw the images I thought it looked like an unreal fan mod, not an actual nintendo title.

Every single one of these complaints have been voiced in this very thread... then there's just one or two straight up trolls.

Yup my criticism from so long ago still stands. It will be by far my favorite Zelda if those elements are addressed in the HD remake. Some already are, (Link's model) and we'll see soon how they retune the game.

It's a shame it's only a mod.

Yes, deciphering costs quite a bit of money which is an added roadblock. There were certain places where you could farm rupees but it's not very fun. I think they could've done away with that aspect of it.

I think hunting the maps themselves is okay though, there was some cool stuff like the ghost ship.

I haven't played Wind Waker in forever, but would it be possible to use the Game Pad to draw a path on the map for the sailing (like the DS game)?
I think the Game Pad could be used for some cool functions that wouldn't stop it from also being used for off screen play.

They'll probably just fix some annoying things like the direction of the wind, the song you need to replay everytime you must use a statue, those butterfly things and other little changes.

But the triforce hunt will be there. And the "bad" (simple) dungeons.

And I don't want to draw a path, it feels like a monorail to me. Give me the perfect control of the GC game but the ability to change the direction of the wind realtime

IIRC, each chart costs 398 ruppees (does anyone know why? Is this some internal development team joke?) Which is a stupidly unrounded number, making the total cost for all the charts go up to 3,184 ruppees.

In the US version of the game, you have access to more ruppee chests than the Japanese version that makes the blow a bit easier (but not by much). Such as, right at the start of the game under Grandma's house there's a orange (100) ruppee chest whereas in the Japanese version it's a Heart Piece.

There's other differences like that, coupled with the Japanese version's charts being more of a bitch to get, that makes the quest itself more annoying than it is fun for both regions.

If they did away with having to pay anything at all, that could help a lot. If they made the number actually ROUNDED (like 350 or 400 ruppees each, or even lower like 300 ruppees each) that would also go a long way in helping anyone who might not be consciously collecting ruppees on the way through the game to get all the charts deciphered.

Anything small like the above could fall under "tuning gameplay" as the quest affects how fun the game is. A lot of people quit at this part of the game, if they don't fix it in some capacity (big or small), it'll be the same problem for those people again.

I wonder if they'll change the Tingle Tuner to be a WiiU controller.

That would be a no-brainer. For 1 player, give the option of using the pad / TP-style wiimote / classic controller. But for 2 player, the second player gets the pad as a Tingle Tuner.

I wouldn't be surprised if giving that functionality another push was the reason they decided to remake the Wind Waker in the first place.

All I can really hope for is it's playable at E3, then we can see the game in motion and perhaps get a gist of some of the improvements gameplay wise.

If the game is to be released this fall, you can be sure it will be playable at E3.

We'll probably get a trailer too.

I really hope they fix the Jabun part. It, more so than the Triforce quest, seems like the very laziest and rushed part of the game to me.

Even the island Jabun is on is marked on the Wind Waker map as an "important" island still (like Outset, Forsaken, Dragon, Forest, and the like), even though there's absolutely nothing special about it. It entirely feels like in the last second of development, they replaced the important, level-containing island with garbage, and instead just gave you the important item that was found in the level.

Even as a kid, I was disappointed...
One of my favourite parts of the game, really creates a sense of urgency and disrupts the expected pacing

I sort of "knew" that you could get the tri-force pieces before the end of the game, but everyone kept calling them triumph forks and I was like "this is probably useless, let me go finish the game first"

Holy shit, now that style is working fine. Like I said, if they redo the geometry and textures they can pull this new look off.

So, what did the criticism look like?

I don't even understand the argument you're trying to make here. Other than the main dungeons' design and lack of difficulty (which are valid issues), you're cherrypicking people who nitpicked about the game to the extreme when it was first released. "There weren't enough islands even though THERE WERE 49 OF THEM" and "I hated the triforce hunt, but I actually didn't think it was that bad, but I actually hated it because Aonuma said it was rushed" or "Waaaaah! This game is shit, and everybody who thinks otherwise has low standaaards!" does not count as legitimate criticism to me.

It's not that a huge number of people didn't enjoy TWW when it came out; they were simply less vocal about it because of... well, that. I thought it was a thoroughly enjoyable game, arguably much more so than both Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword (but I realize mileage varies here).

Just putting my conspiracy theory hat on for a moment, is the wii u's lack of wii game up scaling purposely done so that Nintendo can peddle HD versions later on? I know the wii u doesn't play gc games but still.

No. Nintendo's BC has always been accurate to how the original console operated.

Upscaling it does, but I assume you mean rendering at higher resolutions. It's just not something that can be done simply or with good compatibility. It's as much a Nintendo conspiracy now as it was for 3DS, or for Sony with PS2/PS3/PSV, or Microsoft with X360.

Xenogears had more content. Wind Waker sort of peters out after dungeon 2.

LIES. I spent hours exploring the islands and more hours just exploring Windfall. Throw in the figurine stuff and I felt like it was pretty meaty. Would I like two more dungeons to help with the pacing? Yes! But it has plenty of content.

People who say that Wind Waker lacks side content honestly have no idea what they're talking about. It's no Majora's Mask in that regard, but the Great Sea offers abundant things to do.

I'd definitely call it a rather meaty 3D Zelda.

I'd definitely call it a rather meaty 3D Zelda.

Most of it is repetitive in nature though.

It did not feel nearly as populated and dense as OoT or MM. That said, Windfall and Outset felt alive, and the animation and art style added to that feel.

People who say that Wind Waker lacks content honestly have no idea what they're talking about. There are almost too many things to do in this entry.
Its got a lot of little hidden areas but I find these types of areas one of 3D Zeldas biggest missed opportunities. Few non-essential areas throughout 3D Zelda contain quality content and for me it contributes to them getting old pretty fast. Aside from that there is a lot of little collection quests too which are probably less engaging than the hidden areas are (at least I can explore freely looking for those).

I'd love to see Nintendo incorporate more traveling NPCs on the waves of the great sea and just a few small simple settlements with one other larger town (doesn't even have to be Windfall in scale). The side quests in Majora's mask are more engaging because they involve interesting characters; something every Zelda can take a note from. Also despite being encountered in a non-linear way there is no reason why the hidden areas cannot require certain equipment you obtain later. Make use of the WiiU pad to make notes of situations you cannot tackle yet.

Quanity of side content may be higher than most other 3D Zeldas but quality wise its not exactly memorable or meaningful.
They upped the resolution for N64 games for example in the Zelda collectors edition and many (all?) N64 VC titles.
Those are not backwards compatible games. They are different (updated) versions.

Sure, but it's not like you're limited in what you can do, nor is it extremely unengaging. It feels like the last Zelda I've played wherein exploration is actually heavily involved in several of the NPC sidequests; it made the residential areas like Windfall, Outset and Dragon Roost feel like a part of a greater, bigger world. There's also treasure hunting (most of which requires searching through every nook and cranny of each island, as well as sunken platforms and submarines) and the Pictograph figurine collect-a-thon, which is sort of fun for a change since it was reminiscent of the "picture 'em all" feeling in Pokemon Snap.

I was pretty busy for hours on end doing these things, and while the rewards weren't necessarily proportional to the amount of work it took to get them, it was the experience of it all that felt magical and substantial to me. Not many 3D Zelda games highlight overworld discovery as much as Wind Waker.

Man fuck the haters. WW has become my fav 3d zelda and this remake has become my most anticipated game. Cant wait to see the whole world in this new style. I already played this game uprezzed on dolphin. Bring it on.
