Steam Summer Sale '17 Hidden Gems & Under-The-Radar Recommendations thread

So I'm looking for good games for $3 or less. Any suggestions?

Here's what I got in my cart so far:
The Vanishing of Ethan Carter
A Story about My Uncle
Polarity
The Room
The Room Two

I thought TVOEC was complete trash, I think I gave it 5/10 and I'm a huge fan of the genre, it's gorgeous to look at but just not a fun game at all.

I love puzzle games and Hitman GO is a great one.

I'm going to grab Singularity on @Rhoc's recommendation, it looks fun and well made. I tried the Binary Domain demo but wasn't sold on it so I'll skip that one. Need some more of these under £5 gems to stock up on. I have never done so many Steam queues in my life.

Good buy! Hope you like it as much as I did.

Thanks to everyone that recommended Xanadu Next. I had never heard of it and quite possibly never would have without this thread, but I've played a couple hours of it now and I'm really enjoying it.

Good to see people enjoying Xanadu Next. It definitely deserves a lot more love.

Has anyone mentioned Death Road to Canada yet?

It came out last year and seemingly fell through the cracks.... Nobody talks about it, but its legitimately the most fun I've ever had with an "Oregon Trail" style game. Its marked down to about ten bucks for the sale.

I second this! This is a super fun game, it even includes co-op, you can create yourself and friends and they will appear in the game. Totally worth the price too. Pick it up!

Awesome this looks really cool. Thanks for the suggestion!

While we're speaking of VN's, if I had to pick between SteinsGate and Danganronpa, which would it be?

And separate from visual novels, how is Banner Saga?

Steins;Gate baby!

Danganronpa is a lot more interactive - more Ace Attorney like for sure, but Steins;Gate is just an amazing work of science fiction. I'm not a big VN person, but I could not put it down.

House of Fata Morgana has been highly recommended in this and other threads. Might bite myself.

Tokyo Twilight Ghost Hunters Daybreak: Special Gigs (10% off) is an intersting game - story is nothing special (so far), but it does have a really cool strategy element if you're looking for a VN with gameplay and the character art is gorgeous. Something to check out, but I would recommend everything mentioned before it first.

It's funny, I have $80 in steam credit and I really don't know what to get.

So far I have Doom and Grow Up.

Is Quantum Break playable now? Is it worth $20?

Not to brag but consider giving my list in the first post a read, along with the other gaffer's lists.
Heck play some music in the background, grab a drink and build up that wishlist ;P

Kindergarten is an abstract puzzle adventure game. You play as a student in a school that’s a bit…off. The teacher is trying to get rid of her kids. the janitor is frequently seen cleaning up blood. The cafeteria is serving the same slop over and over again. Kids are walking around with strange devices planted on them after visiting the principal, and one of your fellow classmates has gone missing. It’s up to you to figure out what’s going on, because your life might depend on it.

Kindergarten - $3.99 (20% off)

I did a forum search and can't believe no one has mentioned Tower Unite is on sale. Unless of course they did and the search failed me, in which case let me add another voice of support.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/394690/Tower_Unite/

Tower Unite is a sort of community and minigame focused vacation sandbox that is the spiritual successor to GMod Tower from Garrys Mod. Its made by the same developers only now standalone and on the Unreal engine. Do keep in mind its an early access game, but frequently updated (updated again today with a whole new minigame) Its hard to categorize, and its easier to just briefly introduce some of the high points of what you can do in the game:

The game is $10 right now.

An MMO with no microtransactions - You get currency just by doing whatever you want (playing games or gambling, etc.) and its easy to accumulate. Currency is used to buy furniture for your suite, cosmetic items, or stuff to mess around with.

Minigolf - This game doesn't even have Minigolf in the title, and its arguably the best multiplayer minigolf on Steam. Beautiful levels with their own unique gimmicks and slick design.

Interior Design - Tower Unite allows you to freely decorate and edit your own living space sort of like Animal Crossing, only with infinitely more freedom. Place and rotate furniture, add lighting or decoration, change the weather and time of day, place a TV that can play any youtube video or music, turn any flat surface into cat memes or ground textures from Metroid Prime or something, etc. You are given a suite for free by default but other unique living spaces like an underwater hotel can be bought with game currency. What is interesting is you can buy building blocks that can be formed into whatever shape, so the only limit is imagination and in-game funds.

This was an empty beach to start with:

Developer Transparency - You don't realize what a breath of fresh air this is. The devs are great, and not only do they do frequent developer streams/QAs, list their upcoming and current projects, but they literally type out what they worked on EVERY DAY.

Bowling, Super Monkey Ball, Lazer Tag, Trivia, Gambling (slots, video poker/blackjack, poker tables) - the list goes on.

I'm not sure if it is available to anyone who played, but if you at least donated to Gmod Tower back in the day you can import some net worth and unique trophies into Tower Unite.

You convinced me, I'm so in!

I third this, great game,

And if any of you are also interested in the game on the go, it's currently out on iOS and will be coming to Android in the next month.

Another recommendation for Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun

Real-time strategy stealth game. People always compare it to Commandos, but you don't need any experience with that game to get into it. You have a ninja who throws rocks and shuriken, a thief who sets traps and whistles to attract enemies, a samurai who can lure enemies with sake, kill multiple unarmored enemies, and the only character who can kill other samurai without needing to shoot them first, a kunoichi who can temporarily reduce a enemies' line of sight and wear disguises, and a sniper who can throw grenades (lethal or non-lethal) and send a tanuki to distract enemies. Actually a lot of flexibility although it may not seem that way when you're struggling through the game the first time. Every level has nine optional challenges (badges) that require you to complete certain tasks or play the level in a certain way, like not entering water, no kills, not using a certain character or abilities. Has Japanese voice acting option. There's a demo on Steam with the first level or two.

Can anyone weigh in on Slime Rancher? I'm wondering if it has enough content to justify purchasing right now, or if I should wait for it to leave early access.
It's leaving EA on Aug 1 and the last major content update was just released so it's basically done, and this is probably the best price you'll get it at for a while (sans suprise Humble Bundles). I only played it for a few hours, but it's a very enjoyable and charming farming game.

I really recommend coop. It softens the blow to have a real life person to laugh with when RNG suddenly wrecks your group and you have to start over :D

For the longest time I thought this was a party game that you can only play with friends. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.

Has anyone played A House of Many Doors? It's 50% of right now and in the vein of Sunless Sea.

Welcome to the House. You are not welcome.

Explore the House, a parasite dimension that steals from other worlds, in a train that scuttles on mechanical legs.

Uncover secrets. Open locked doors. Lead a crew of dysfunctional characters. Write procedurally-generated poems. Fight in turn-based combat. Explore a strange new setting, dripping with atmosphere, crusted with lore. Escape. Escape. Escape.

You are an explorer, poet and spy, launching yourself into the unknown in search of adventure. Rig an election in the city of the dead. Visit a village lit by the burning corpse of a god (careful not to inhale the holy smoke). Sell your teeth to skittering spider-things for a moment in their library. Over 90 bizarre locations await discovery in the dust and the dark.

A House of Many Doors is a 2D exploration RPG that takes inspiration from Sunless Sea, China Mieville, Planescape: Torment and Italo Calvino's Invisible Cities. It features over 300,000 words of branching original story and over 770 trillion bad poems.

WARNING.
Please be aware that this game contains the following romance options:
Men.
Women.
Goatman.
Ten million crows.
An oil rig.

A House of Many Doors has benefited from the kind support and partial funding of Failbetter Games, makers of Sunless Sea and Fallen London.

Rock Paper Shotgun also has an interesting review on it: https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2017/02/03/a-house-of-many-doors-review/

How did Tower Unite fall so far under GAF's radar? Searched and there has been only one thread with two replies, and it was about the Kickstarter in 2015. First time seeing it.

This game is brilliant and everyone should buy it because i want them to make another one.

Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...
Not sure who played it, so:

Final Station is a pretty nifty little game. Survival Action Horror kinda thing, but most elements are relatively toned down in favor of story exposition. The game is split in two parts, in one you need to take care of your train and your passengers, in the other, you need to sneak/fight zombies to advance.

The highlight is the world building though, they really had some great ideas for the setting/how to visualize their post apocalypse in pixel style.

Well done, definitely recommended. Currently 60% off on Steam and for PS4.

Everyone need to play Emily Is Away 2. If you're a man that has experienced high school this game is ESSENTIAL. One of the most profoundly emotional experiences I have ever had in a game.

I haven't bought anything off steam in a long time. What is good these days, loot, rpg, party rpg even better, with builds, and awesome tactical fights? I should just expect to wait on Divinity 2, or buy more slots and stash space in Path of Exile for the upcoming mega patch.

I could probably even give FFXIV another shot (sub no expansion), or start over in FFXI. All I do these days is play Marvel Heroes, Paragon, and Dragon Age Inquisition.

Expedition Vikings if you like the History Channel Vikings show. I bought it 2 days ago and I'm already 8 hours in which is a shit ton for me lol. It is a "realistic" viking world so everyone is superstitious but there is no actual dragons and trolls and shit, but everyone believes that there are. It isn't a super loot heavy game, which I like. Quests are good, usually the "viking way" is the best way which is not always the "moral way" in a D&D sense. The game got middling reviews when it launched due to bugs, but it is 5 patches in and I haven't noticed any bugs yet.

so.. Darkest Dungeon or Unexplored, which one should I go for?
Having played both (minus DD's expansion), I'd give the nod to Unexplored, personally. It's one of my favourite games of 2017.

Like, if you're looking for a roguelike, you can't go wrong with Unexplored. It brings some great new ideas and innovations to the genre. e.g. It generates a full dungeon right away, which is a much bigger change than you might think.
