Tom Brady beats NFL in 'Deflategate' court case, league's 4-game suspension nullified

Wow, this is huge.

In short, this says one thing I've been saying all along...Brady is bigger than the NFL. He's not just the best and most well-known player in the league, perhaps of all time...he RUNS THE GODDAMN FUCKING PLACE.

I can seriously see Goodell resigning now, but let's be honest, he should have done than years ago. Football is the biggest form of entertainment in America not because of him, but IN SPITE of him.

Here's the basic deal with this court case:

  • It was not about the actual case against Brady. Federal Judges are not allowed to rule on the facts of the case
  • It was about the process. The decision that has to be made was whether or not the punishment and appeal process was conducted fairly
  • The judge decided that it was not
  • In his argument he cites 3 specific things he feels make the process flawed:
  • - The rules never said that anyone could be subject to a suspension for tampering with balls
  • - The league didn't allow Brady's team to cross-examine a key witness during their appeal
  • - The league didn't allow Brady's team to see any of the background information for the Wells report during their appeal
  • Essentially, the judge is saying that, whether or not Brady did anything is immaterial. The punishment and appeal process was, in his opinion, flawed, and because of that he vacate the punishment
Fucking NFL botched this man. Fuck.

Thank goodness.

Doesn't change that the NFL smear campaign was successful. Just look at all the people in this thread that think there's anything supporting the claim that they tampered with the balls.

Facts and science encephalitis mean shit when you blindly follow what Goodell says.

Truth. Ok I'm off to the gym to deflate some of this extra weight I'm carrying...

As a Steelers fan I hate to cheer for any Pats/Brady victory but anything that calls into question Godell's arbitrary punishments is a good thing IMO. The sooner they get rid of the guy, the better

Disappointing but unsurprising. No way would it stick because big names like Brady draw viewership and game attendance. Everyone eventually bends their knees to the almighty rating and the power it holds over advertising dollars and ticket sales.

You are ridiculously crazy if you think a federal judge gives a crap about that. If money and viewership was so important the NFL wouldn't have pushed so hard to keep this suspension in the first place.

A win for all sports fans.

Poor Jimmy G. He was gonna have a chance for his stock to rise.

And now I hope Tom and Gis can get their problems solved. GL to the first fam.

Edit: Looking into the cost of getting a jersey made with the judge's name on it.

O They're donezo.

Tommy is sliding in Bar Raffaeli's DMs as we speak.

No, that's Peyton Manning. The league has literally changed the rules TWICE to make things easier for Peyton after he got annihilated in the postseason by the Patriots and Seahawks.

Brady has never been "the golden boy", too many fans don't like him.

As fantastic as this news is for Patriots fan it is even better for everyone else. The NFL won't be able to suspend players on shaky/non-existent evidence.

Michael McCann said:
This is a huge win for Tom Brady, but even bigger win for NFLPA. Next time a player is suspended without real evidence, they'll go to court.

The judge also took a clear dig at the nature of the Wells Report by repeatedly referring to it as an "independent" investigation (scare quotes in original).

They've done it three times for Brady, twice making roughing the passer rules harsher, and oh yeah, the FUCKING TUCK RULE.

The Court finds that no player alleged or found to have had a general awareness of the inappropriate ball deflation activities of others or who allegedly schemed with others to let air out of footballs in a championship game and also had not cooperated in an ensuing investigation, reasonably could be on notice that their discipline would (or should) be the same as applied to a player who violated the NFL Policy on Anabolic Steroids and Related Substances.

Yep.

Findings of the court lengthily crititize the wishy-washy wording of the report... "more likely than not" and "At least generally aware" as well. Phrasing that anybody with a brain read immediately and thought "you can hang a suspension on this?"

Anyone who still believes he cheated and would never win any superbowls without cheating needs to get a grip. You're all sad, pathetic, jealous haters. Get a life.

Good for Brady, great for the NFLPA.
Goodell overstepped in a massive way. The judge even told them to try and work it out, but they just buried their head in the sand.

Now you sound like you have no idea what you're talking about. Let's not forget about the roughing the passer rule changes thanks to Brady.

FWIW, Tuck Rule called against Patriots in 3rd game of the season that year dealing them a loss in nearly identical situation...... Before Brady was a starter. Belichampion said he would have never thought to challenge the call had it not been called against NE a few months earlier. Hashtag NO FILTER

I'd love to see the crossover between people who are fine with the Patriots cheating consistently and those who support Bernie Sanders because he would make for a more fair America.

lol this sounds like you're brainstorming a research topic for class to check for correlation.

No Bell, no Bryant, Brady no longer suspended?

I guess it will make the Steelers victory even that much better.

I wonder when the NFL will appeal? They pretty much have to because damn Goodell looks like a real idiot right now.

Amazing work there Jets/Colts/etc fans.

*edit*

Goddell will absolutely not resign. He's completely unflinching in his righteousness. Considering he wouldn't accept an appeal from Brady without requiring Brady to purger himself, I doubt he'd resign after something like this. He's just a joke.

I hope our shit defense doesn't let Brady score like 60 points. That would be quite the story. Come back from suspension, score 8 TDs or something.

This is why the parts of the court system are stupid. Evidence is required for things that are common sense.

lol, this has to be a joke.

Hey, I live close to the state so a little Masshole rubs off on me sometimes.

Regardless, are we all in agreement that Goodell pretty much has to announce his resignation now? I mean, say it won't be until the end of the season, who cares, but his credibility is completely destroyed.

This actually sets a bad precedent for the NFL.

Me thinks the current CBA is pretty much obsolete now, since the legal system has negated a huge part of Goodell's power, which the league and players agreed to give him in the CBA.

If nobody is going to honor it, then why does it exist?

The thing is the Patriots are still viewed as cheating. All this did was say that the NFL was overreaching with the 4 game suspension as a consequence of the cheating.

The fine for CHEATING is still there

the loss of draft picks for CHEATING is still there.
